molsson··on Firefox Debugger
I tried to use the Firefox debugger recently, but I could find where you set "event listener breakpoints" (e.g. a breakpoint that stops whenever a click handler runs, regardless of which element was clicked). Some documents seemed to suggest that Firefox has this feature but I tried multiple versions of Firefox (including fiddling with the "new debugger frontend" flag in about:config) but I just couldn't find it anywhere?
molsson··on Pass: A standard Unix password manager
Implemented as 700 lines of shell script?! Why?
molsson··on Package Management: The problem with using version ranges
In npm all packages have their own dependencies so specifying a specific version sort of works. In Maven for example the dependency tree is flattened by the package manager so that at runtime there can only be a single version of libA. This is just how Java 8 and below works, you simply cannot import two versions of com.example.Foo at the same time. This will change in Java 9 with Jigsaw though. OSGi was a way to workaround this problem in <= Java 8. npm also has a "flattening" feature to save disk space but this is a completely different thing, an implementation detail that is never visible to the packages themselves.

molsson··on Chinese Tech Group Led by Qihoo 360 Bids $1.2B for Browser Maker Opera
Given all the horrors @taviso posted concerning Comodo and AVAST etc, it's really really sad to see that the remains of Opera Software are now in fact being bought by a consortium that amongst other things are running "an anti-virus maker that ships a browser". What could possibly go wrong?

And the fact that Qihoo recently got busted in a Volkswagen-like scam when their "anti virus software" was tested does not inspire confidence in their business ethics either: http://www.computerworld.com/article/2917384/malware-vulnera...

The wikipedia page for "360 Secure Browser" says: "High usage numbers may be due to the browser being difficult to uninstall and a warning pop-up that appears when a user attempts to install another browser, claiming that the other browser is unsafe and should not be run." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/360_Secure_Browser

This article gives a bit more context: http://www.digital-dd.com/qihoo-browser-war/

molsson··on Browser Engines 2015: Commit Rates and Active Developer Counts
There is one line/series for the blink _repo_ which also contains all of the webkit history. The line for webkit also contains an identical webkit history for the pre-fork period and by chance blink was rendered on top which is kind of unfortunate indeed. In the interactive version you can click the checkbox in the legend to hide a particular series and then it becomes easier to see why it looks the way it does.

molsson··on A glimpse into a new programming language under development at Microsoft
Software patents are contentious issue for some people so it's not something I'd include in a CV or on an open accessible "about page".
molsson··on A glimpse into a new programming language under development at Microsoft
The homepage of Joe Duffy says "I’ve been granted 45 patents, with another 33 pending" (see his homepage under /about via google cache since the page is down due to load from HN). Bragging about patents doesn't exactly make me like the guy. Has he been living under a rock, why would he write that on his about page?

Anyway, he says explicitly that he cannot reveal any details at this point; i.e. Microsoft has filed patents related to this "new langage" and can't talk about it until they are approved. He also claims to have been working on his "new language" for 5 years already; I wonder what those 33 patents he says he got pending are? Or maybe he patented 33 things related to something he hasn't been working on for the last 5 years? Not likely. Microsoft will get more and more desperate as they continue to be marginalized in terms of market cap, market share and developer mindshare. They have a long track record of simply being dicks (i.e. just look at how they charge royalty for every android phone, and how they created the Rock Star patent troll company etc).

It would be better for everyone if Microsoft stayed out of the "perf + productivity" language niche.
