molf··on Oat Milk Could Change the Way You Drink Coffee (2018)
Oatly is brilliant to make cappuccinos with: the foam is very stable and tastes great, unlike many other milk substitutes in my opinion.

But unfortunately it clogs the cappuccinatore of our Jura coffee machine after a few cups...

molf··on Nginx on Wasmjit
Not sure why you're downvoted, this is a very interesting talk.
molf··on Proof That iOS Still Hasn’t Gotten Undo Right
This only works for editable text, though, right?

Selecting text from websites or other static text is as clumsy as ever.

molf··on NULL: The worst mistake of computer science? (2015)
I think it would be nice if `NOT NULL` was set by default on columns. However there are a lot of legitimate use cases that can't be (practically) solved by restructuring.

Data can be incomplete. Maybe only because it is not (yet) known. If NULL values were impossible it would create the need for one additional table with a foreign key relationship for every attribute that can be independently NULL. Sometimes this pattern is a good idea, but I don't think I can be convinced it should be the only possible solution.

molf··on Yak shaving and fixing
“Authorette”, really? What is wrong with the word “author”?
molf··on Ask HN: How to suggest '/.well-known/health' as a standard?
I haven't, I'm not really sure where to start, so any suggestions would be welcome!

I mostly don't know who this standard would benefit enough to put in any significant resources. It seems just a small thing that helps everyone...?

molf··on Show HN: Visualize Your Rails App to ER Diagram Automatically
Graphviz is licensed under the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eclipse_Public_License, not the GPL.

Neither library bundles or depends on Graphviz directly, you need to install Graphviz yourself. I'm wondering what kind of issues you're afraid of? Are you banned from using software that is licensed under a copyleft license somehow?

molf··on Kubernetes Is a Surprisingly Affordable Platform for Personal Projects
As a data point, on a busy GKE production cluster with 12 highcpu-16 nodes we have kube-system pods taking a total of ~700mCPU on all servers combined. I'm not sure how the CPU usage scales, but probably not linearly.

Most of the CPU usage is kube-dns, which I think requires much less CPU if you make few internal network connections.

molf··on A guide to proper use of animation in UX
It can make it clear what happened after user interaction.

Was an article added to the list during a refresh? Did the correct item actually go away after deleting it? It's easy to miss updates without animations. Even if you don't miss the update an animation will provide an additional confirmation that the correct thing happened.

On touch devices there's also the fact that animations mimic input gestures. Imagine swipe-to-delete without the item actually moving, that would be super awkward to use...

Of course, like anything, it is possible to mis-/overuse.

molf··on EA reportedly under criminal investigation in Belgium due to FIFA's loot boxes
Agreed; this should be made illegal entirely – this mechanic benefits no one except the game publisher.
molf··on GUIs Considered Harmful (1992)
You disprove your own point, this is from 1992
molf··on HTTP 418 I'm a Teapot
I'm reminded of this NPM issue: https://github.com/npm/npm/issues/20791
molf··on Why Japanese Whisky Is So Good and So Hard to Find
You really cannot compare a Yamazaki with an Islay whisky. Sherry or otherwise.

Preferring Laphroaig PX over a Yamazaki has nothing to do with the quality of either, but with personal preference. You just cannot compare a heavily peaty/smoky whisky with one that is neither.

molf··on City street orientations around the world
As a European, I agree. US cities are confusing to me because streets all look the same. I find it impossible to locate interesting areas without prior knowledge. Maybe what seems easiest to navigate depends on what you’re used to?
molf··on Squeezed: Why Our Families Can’t Afford America
Inequality is not a measure of how much money rich people make.
molf··on The Machine Fired Me
In many EU countries a contract does not actually end if you continue to show up to do work in mutual (implicit) agreement with the managers at the company you work for. It would constitute an implicit extension of the contract, effectively renewing it under the same terms for the same duration (with a maximum of 1 year IIRC).
molf··on React is the new jQuery
I know this is a rhetorical question, but Prototype.js was pretty similar to jQuery; although jQuery won the popularity contest.
molf··on Docker is a dangerous gamble
Cannot agree with this more; but (as you already hint at) Kubernetes is the actual win, and I would not be surprised if Docker would eventually be replaced with another container solution in the Kubernetes ecosystem.
molf··on The Unemployment Rate in Every Region of Europe
That's not true, but the problem is likely a different than you anticipated; a large region with very few inhabitants is visually more present than a small region with many inhabitants.

So the number of unemployed people can be much larger in the small region than in the big region, contrary to the visual effect that the big region has on the visualisation (even though the employment rate of both regions could be the same).

molf··on The Why of Cooking (2017)
Fresh eggs, yeah, that does help. But if your eggs are slightly older you can still try the trick of putting them a few seconds in hot water. And if your eggs are fresh the results in my experience are also improved with this method, without the need for a strainer.
molf··on The Why of Cooking (2017)
Are the eggs room temperature to begin with? That seems important to me... Otherwise perhaps vary the duration. I've had great success with this method but YMMV.
molf··on The Why of Cooking (2017)
The shell quickly cools down and you should be able to handle it pretty soon after taking them out.
molf··on The Why of Cooking (2017)
An even better technique (I tried lots) is to put the eggs in boiling water for 20-30s before breaking and poaching them. It will start the coagulation process of the egg whites, making it much more viscous when you actually do break them. This causes the egg whites to keep together and not spread in the water too quickly. Result is a nicer, rounder poached egg.
molf··on Publishers Haven't Realized How Big a Deal GDPR Is
If you cannot operate the service without that particular data, you don’t need explicit consent.
molf··on Publishers Haven't Realized How Big a Deal GDPR Is
IIRC this is exactly what is being done with the upcoming ePrivacy directive. For example I believe it will become mandatory to honour the DNT header.
molf··on Publishers Haven't Realized How Big a Deal GDPR Is
I think GDPR intends to protect businesses from "denial of service attacks" through sending many repetitive or bogus requests. A single, legitimate request is definitely not excessive.
molf··on Publishers Haven't Realized How Big a Deal GDPR Is
I think we agree; it seems better to rely on legitimate interest than ask for consent for everything. (Although it does require thinking about and actually having a legitimate interest.)
molf··on Publishers Haven't Realized How Big a Deal GDPR Is
I have the feeling nobody knows this. To me it seems this part of GDPR is particularly targeted at major companies and they can be held accountable through subsidiaries or branch offices in the EU. It doesn't seem very likely to me that small businesses that happen to sell to EU customers too will be the primary target of enforcement anytime soon.
molf··on Publishers Haven't Realized How Big a Deal GDPR Is
You can show ads without needlessly collecting personal data.
molf··on Publishers Haven't Realized How Big a Deal GDPR Is
Google has been working on making Google Analytics GDPR compliant, but you must actively change some settings to pseudonymize collected data and also sign/accept a GDPR contract with them. Also you must make sure to not explicitly add any personal data to GA. For example avoid sending any user names, email addresses, ip addresses, or any form data to Google Analytics as part of event data.

I don't have an overview of all steps required but provided you do this then GA should still be allowed to be used without explicit user permission.
