moistgorilla··on The Yale Problem Begins in High School
> Ugh

Congratulations, you just lowered the value of the rest of your comment significantly.

Do there exist any social circles where the use of the term "Ugh" is reflected positively?

moistgorilla··on The Yale Problem Begins in High School
Under what moral framework are you judging Eich? I can think of many ways what Eich did could be construed as morally neutral and/or morally positive.

Not that I think gays shouldn't have the right to marry. It's just that your idea of what makes something moral is horribly naive and self-serving.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this video was that this group did it before SpaceX without knowing SpaceX was trying to solve the harder problem.
moistgorilla··on Can Good Doctors Be Bad for Your Health?
When I was 19 I was diagnosed with something called hydronephrosis. It's effect on my kidney function wasn't significant but my parents took me to see one of the most famous urologists (I think the hospital was in philadelphia) anyway. I don' remember the specifics but the doctor immediately recommended invasive surgery. My father then took me to another urologist he knew from a friend's recommendation. This doctor said that there was no reason to have surgery yet. The kidney with the hydronephrosis had something like 4% below utilization rate that was normal and that we should wait. We decided to follow the second doctors advice and do regular checkups every year and the problem actually just went away.

The most amazing thing about this experience was when we called 3 weeks in advance to cancel the appointment for surgery the nurse got angry with us and said something along the lines of "You actually dare to waste the doctor's time?". It was very surreal.

TLDR: Don't get pressured into getting surgery, go get second opinions.

not the person you are responding to but i've found udacity and linda to be the most valuable. Short and to the point videos are more useful to me than long winded lectures.
moistgorilla··on China to begin two-child policy
The latter. If people took responsibility for their actions I believe injustices like forced abortions wouldn't happen as often. I can imagine it's very easy for somebody that is forcing a woman to have an abortion at 8.5 months pregnant to rationalize away what they are doing as upholding the law and that the government is responsible for what is happening.
moistgorilla··on China to begin two-child policy
> responsible : having an obligation to do something, or having control over or care for someone, as part of one's job or role.

The criminal is only responsible for breaking the law, the only thing he had control over before he was caught (assuming he was caught for the sake of argument). We as society are responsible for dealing out the punishment.

How could the criminal be responsible for the punishment when he is not the one inflicting it on him/herself.

edit: To make my argument slightly easier to understand I'm going to give an extreme example

Let's say it's illegal to be a certain religion. Is it the insert religion here person's responsibility that he is punished and sent to a death camp?

moistgorilla··on China to begin two-child policy
When a death row inmate is killed the executioner is without doubt responsible for the death. Just like the judge that sentenced him is responsible. Now whether they were justified or not is a different question (which many would argue there is never good enough justification for the death penalty)

Anyway, it's not interesting, the only thing the parents are responsible for is having a second child and breaking the law. What people do to enforce the law is their responsibility not the responsibility of the parents that broke it, the same applies for the murderer on death row.

Just because something is legal doesn't absolve you of responsibility. The same way soldiers "just following orders" are responsible for the actions they commit at the behest of their superiors. Both the superiors and the soldiers are responsible

moistgorilla··on China to begin two-child policy
> Just to make it clear, these types of enforcement are not norms

Back up your statement with a citation please. Considering that they explicitly made forced abortions of these kinds illegal (although this is hardly enforced) implies that it was a big enough problem the government needed to step in.

moistgorilla··on China to begin two-child policy
> Couldn't the argument be made that the parents, in effect, did it to their own child

No, it couldn't. The person responsible for killing the child is the person that enforces the law and the person that created the law.

moistgorilla··on How eSports are saving the PC industry
Yes, you obviously can't just do a direct port of halo with autoaim and put it on pc and hope it will be a popular esport. My point was that Microsoft has the resources to MAKE halo a good esport title but they wont.
moistgorilla··on How eSports are saving the PC industry
The professional matches wouldn't be played on xbox obviously. I understand Esports probably better than you do, I am on a team in ESEA Open (We aren't good though)
moistgorilla··on How eSports are saving the PC industry
> Not really. Halo is a game designed around a ten-foot controller experience. There's a decent amount of sticky aim and banana bullets to compensate for the relative lack of accuracy in thumbsticks

Most of your arguments here are based on the fact that halo is only released on console. It's obvious then that it would have these console shooter features. If it were released on PC it obviously would not have aim assist.

> and the aim reticle is 1/3 of the way up the screen, instead of the dead center like you'd expect in a PC FPS.

This is something people would easily get over.

There are still people playing Halo 1 for pc online (Even after microsoft shut down the servers) and there is an even larger community playing a reverse engineered Halo version that was released in russia as F2P. (http://www.reddit.com/r/haloonline)

> Sure, there is a real comfort to work when you have big screens and a mouse/keyboard, but you don't actually need a PC for that, a tablet is enough.

I can hardly get work done on my laptop let alone a tablet.

moistgorilla··on How eSports are saving the PC industry
I'm pulling numbers out of my ass but I would really be surprised if more than 100,000 of those viewers are duplicate accounts. To do the duplicate viewer thing you need to own multiple accounts with a copy of the game on each one.
moistgorilla··on How eSports are saving the PC industry
Microsoft have the biggest IP that could turn into an esport (Halo) and all they would need to do is put it on PC and Xbox one for free, throw in cosmetic microtransaction ala CSGO and they would make billions. But they will never do it.
moistgorilla··on How eSports are saving the PC industry
> I don't know if it's still a thing but in Counter Strike people use very low resolutions to enhance performance, have better vision and reduce mouse movement. We are talking about games where a few ms can make a difference.

While this is true pros still have very high performance pcs because there is an advantage to playing at 300 - 400 frames per second.

moistgorilla··on The future of UI is text
It's not exclusive to slack, for example: twitch chat there are a bunch of text commands that people love to use. When people use emojis and other such things they usually use a text macro. If you've noticed with programs like photoshop and illustrator, it's recommended for novices to learn all of the keyboard shortcuts.

If anything this points to the future of UI being a combination of text and point and click.

moistgorilla··on Unit Economics
I was nodding my head in agreement until I got to this line

> where you make more than you spend on each user, and it gets better not worse as you get bigger, you may not look like some of hottest companies of today, but you’ll look a lot like Google and Facebook.

Wouldn't Facebook be an example of a company with bad unit economics?

moistgorilla··on China factory activity shrinks to six and a half year low as orders tumble
If my personal experience makes any difference, when I was shopping in IKEA with my mother there were two seemingly identical ceramic bowls, one made in Turkey and the other made in China. My mom chose the one made in Turkey because she doesn't want to eat out of something made in China (she knows nothing about manufacturing in Turkey btw).

Also, I would personally never consciously buy any technology designed and built by a Chinese company because even with all of the NSA scandals in the US I still trust my information more on an Android or IOS device than a Chinese Android variant.

moistgorilla··on How Not to Die (2007)
> If you can't pay people what they deserve, I think you should accept death

Sorry but if they "deserve" more money they should find a job where they would be payed that. As an employee it's your own responsibility not to get screwed by your employer. If they decide not to pay you, leave.

The same goes for the employer. It's their responsibility to not "accept death". Accepting death is the mindset that will almost always lead to failure.

moistgorilla··on Soylent 2.0
Every person in this thread who is "shocked" why anyone would want soylent is using this whole "good healthy REAL food" bs and it's honestly nauseating. It reminds me of advertising for "artisanal" products and it also reminds me of people complaining about how the world is too fast paced and you need to slow down and get some fresh air. No, I don't.

Anyway, your post in particular made me pull the trigger on buying this.
