mogwire··on Red Hat being phased out of existence?
Many, many people are still in a state of denial.

IBM did this correctly.

IBM develops and sells Storage Products, so we are going to take the engineering teams that development and maintain those storage products because, you know, it just makes sense.

We maintain and develop Power, etc. so it only makes sense that we move all development for RHEL, OpenShift, Ansible, Satellite, etc on Power, etc to IBM because, you know, it makes sense.

Why do we have two HR, Legal, etc teams? Those teams are joining Red Hat Jan 1, because, you know, it makes sense.

And so on and so on, and many Red Hatters just said, "Yea that does make sense".

Suddenly, someone pointed out that in a year and half span, 1/4th of the company will move to Red Hat leaving Engineering, Sales, and Support and 1/3rd of Sales is moving as well and, only then, did the rest of Red Hat say, "Holy Shit!"

mogwire··on Red Hat being phased out of existence?
Then why don't they do it now?

SUSE cannot replace Red Hat. This is the irony of OpenELA. They are a scavenger that relies on the work Red Hat does. Suse, Oracle, CQI, etc are going to suddenly come up with hundreds of millions of dollars to replicate Red Hat's Engineering team to maintain and develop all of these packages?

No. And you know that.

If you are too dumb or too lazy to figure out what this guy has, then you are the problem and will be looked at as a relic.

Watching the AI slop my sales reps put in their emails is disgusting but the reply telling them how great of a job they are doing and how insightful their email was says differently.

Many people are laughing to the bank while you are still running `--help` to figure out how to run a complex command.

Typical FOSS hypocrite.

Mad that “free” software has to be paid by someone.

mogwire··on Podman v6.0.0
And that issue shows the problem with OSS.

Nothing is ever good enough.

> Please report this to your distribution

And the reply:

> but you could create your own .deb packages for each github release, which can be installed much quicker than downloading and compiling source code and all its dependencies.

This is why OSS maintainers have burn out. Always wanting more and more. Not even the source code is good enough.

mogwire··on FBI is buying location data to track US citizens, director confirms
> The Court ruled that individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy in the detailed, comprehensive record of their movements that CSLI provides, even though they share it with their carriers. This decision limited the "third-party doctrine," which previously suggested no privacy rights in information shared with third parties, and established that the unique nature of cell phone data requires greater protection.

Additionally, the decision was narrow, applying specifically to historical CSLI.

The issue of buying location data from a 3rd party company as part of a service has not been argued.

> the FBI has confirmed it was buying access to people’s data collected from data brokers, who source much of their information — including location data — from ordinary consumer phone apps and games

This is completely different from CSLI, you are agreeing to provide your location to these apps and games, as most require it, and, finally, a majority of these EULA state that the data may be shared with 3rd parties.

SCOTUS makes narrow rulings all the time and this is one of them.

The argument that you are expressly providing your location information and agreeing that it can/will be shared with a 3rd party who can then do as they please with your data is not a violation of the 4th amendment and will be excluded from the 3rd party doctrine.

Many people won’t agree with this, and if ever argued in a court, they won’t agree with the ruling when it’s allowed to continue.

mogwire··on FBI is buying location data to track US citizens, director confirms
Requesting != Buying

When this goes back to the courts you can come back to this comment and still be angry you are wrong.

mogwire··on FBI is buying location data to track US citizens, director confirms
> Carpenter v. United States (2018) was a landmark Supreme Court case that held the government generally needs a warrant to access historical cell-site location information (CSLI) from cell phone carriers, as its acquisition constitutes a Fourth Amendment search

This is very different from buying your data from a company especially when the user consented to their location being tracked.

Too many people in these threads jumping to anti-Trump when the real issue is how quick we are to give up our our privacy to use technology and then quickly turn to shock in anger when it’s used against us.

This is an important question.

The tree outside of house is not 9 feet tall per. I have a 2 story house and it easily towers 10 feet higher than my house.

Additionally, there are several Royal Palms that are close to 50ft and they show as being only 15 feet.

Pushing their decisions? This is comical.

I guess Debian, SUSE, Canonical, etc get that email from Red Hat just go along with it. We better make the switch, we don’t want our ::checks notes:: competitor made at us.

You don’t know they are a positive force?

This, despite the fact that Rocky, Alma, Oracle Enterprise Linux, etc exist because of the hard work and money spent by Red Hat.

And what are those companies doing to fix this issue you claim Red Hat causes? Nothing. Because they like money, especially when all you have to do is rebuild and put your name on other people’s hard work.

And what exactly is incomprehensible? What exactly is it that they’re doing to the Linux desktop that make it so that people can’t fix their own problems? Isn’t the whole selling point of Rocky and Alma by most integrators is that it’s so easy you don’t need red hat to support it?

I supported Cerner RHEL servers for 6 years and Cerner is a joke.

Everything has to run as root.

All their scripts are Korn shell hacks from the 90s that have been carrier over.

Their god awful Kickstart scripts were written in stone even if you prove that there were better ways.

Cerner controlled the root password.

Cerner123!

They hard coded passwords with ROT13.

No wonder Oracle bought them.

mogwire··on Ex-Waymo engineers launch Bedrock Robotics to automate construction
Honestly do you not think what he is saying isn't true?

Do you think they count the items he mentioned in the total costs?

Every major project in America has undocumented costs to go along with the miles of red tape. Just look at California's High Speed Rail.

Where I live they wanted to extend the expressway and it was overwhelmingly supported. So why, 6 years later hasn't it happened? The environmentalist sued to get a survey done that took 2 years to find.... no impact. The county commissioners got voted out and now the new ones want certain promises. The company that got the original no bid contract is owned by a brother of a former commissioner so that led to law suits. People sued because they don't want the new exits to be too close to their house. Others sued because they felt the exits would targets towards higher end homes and didn't equally consider everyone. Then you have the demands that we use ONLY AMERICAN LABOUR!!! and ONLY AMERICAN MATERIALS!!! A state representative said they would boycott the expansion unless a certain percentage of his constitutions were hired to do the work regardless of their qualifications. Another said they would block it due to road noise and complaints from his constitutions unless compensation was made.

It goes on and on and each one costs money they don't count in the official budget.

mogwire··on Getting forked by Microsoft
Licenses don’t matter and are rarely challenged in court.

This is the nature of OSS. Out right theft in hopes you will never know until it’s too late.

Very rarely do large corporations contribute their fair share back to any project.

Does this make me money and/or solve a problem quickly? Fork it and it’s mine.

Until we stop giving money to large corporations that profit off the free work of others, then it will never stop.

And it won’t because we like low cost solutions that work.

mogwire··on Open source AI: Red Hat's point-of-view
Restrict access to paying customers? Restrict access to companies violating an EULA to not redistribute packages?

That fact that people continue to spread this trope is amazing.

I pay for RHEL and I have a developer subscription for personal usage and the SRPMs are right there on their download portal.

Just because CIQ err Rocky has to take extra steps and violate Red Hat’s EULA doesn’t mean they restricted access.

mogwire··on IBM to buy HashiCorp in $6.4B deal
It always amazing me how people play telephone with Red Hat and how bad the quality of life is post IBM.

When they show the service awards they don’t even cover 5 years because they don’t have all day.

If it was so bad then you wouldn’t see engineers with 10, 15, or 20 years experience staying there. They already got their money from the IBM purchase so if it were bad then they would leave.

Oh but they don’t innovate anymore.

Summit is coming. Let’s see what gets announced and then a live demo.

mogwire··on Fedora Workstation 39
It’s in the EULA. They don’t deny it and it’s their right.

The problem is RMS and all the people supporting FOSS and the GPL say Red Hat, and any other company, are well with in their rights to have that clause.

And this causes people, who didn’t pay for RHEL, won’t pay for Rocky or Alma or any other clone to hate a company they never supported.
