mobilemidget··on Tesla buys $1.5B in Bitcoin and plans to start accepting it as payment
Where can I find this in the blockchain?
mobilemidget··on Requests dropped when using Cloudflare’s free tier for a commercial project
nervous tick Reading this title triggered traumas :D

Same applies for AWS 'Free tier' database usage. Nothing free about it practically.

mobilemidget··on How to run FreeBSD 13 in QEMU on Apple Silicon Mac
yes certainly would suck to pay, because in the end VMWare isn't issue free either.
mobilemidget··on Apple silicon M1 as-a-Service
I clicked this and same time, got an email notification from Scaleway about the exact same thing, what are the odds :)

mobilemidget··on Sales of electric cars up by 43% in 2020
On the radio the other day there was a car show and they were talking about costs for battery replacements (and then it was advised to replace board computer, managing the batteries too) for a Tesla, I was shocked by the costs. I don't recall the exact but he was 30k+ euro lighter. I was interested in a electric car, but interest dropped significantly after hearing that. Maybe I don't know enough about cars to compare to regular gas cars maintenance costs.
mobilemidget··on Today I learned your Apple Watch can double as a vlogging viewfinder
A little mirror would work quite okay too.
mobilemidget··on YouTube removed a Cybersecurity channel without much reason
Maybe when everybody has gbit+ upload speeds at home. I know I would host a lot more things from home if I had better upload at home.
mobilemidget··on Nikon Is ending 70 years of camera production in Japan
The nikor lenses I have, are items I own that have gone down in price the least over the years. One actually seems to have increased a little.
mobilemidget··on All problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone (2014)
I always find this percentages puzzling. I reckon people busy thinking are too busy, or simply never get requested to fill in surveys about how they spend their idle CPU brain time.

Thinking is the last remaining freedom, as long as you don't say all the things you think of out loud. :)

mobilemidget··on A container ship lost a record 1,800 containers
How many containers were on board in total? Cannot seem to find that in article or in comments here on HN?

After reading this title I was more suspected to think the whole boat sunk.

mobilemidget··on Made my personal site into a desktop environment
I actually thought that it wasn't so quick, but figuring HN crowd is bashing on it, seems okay :)

But commander keen is there, there goes the rest of my Sunday lol

thanks!

mobilemidget··on The Nintendo Switch uses my open source code
A meet and greet with Mario would be nice :-)
mobilemidget··on HopsFS: 100x Times Faster Than AWS S3
but isn't a filename a key, and its content the value?
mobilemidget··on Optimizing Your Web App 100x Is Like Adding 99 Servers
Make it work Make it work good Make it work fast

I think I read this here years ago as order of development, maybe quote from somebody else even, I forgot

mobilemidget··on YouTube adds ads but won't pay all content-makers
just before I saw the first headlines, I was jokingly complaining to a friend that it seemed Youtube was showing more ads then regular commercial TV channels do. Apparently something did change...
mobilemidget··on Firefox 83 introduces HTTPS-Only Mode
gemini didn't ring any bell for me, for those like me,

mobilemidget··on Farewell, macOS
I think it is time hacker news filters out these kind of desktop migration stories. It almost seems the authors write them to convince themselves of something, unsure what exactly.

But it doesn't seem like there is any valuable hacker news worthy information in any of them.

mobilemidget··on macOS Big Sur Update Bricking Some Older MacBook Pro Models
Curiosity mainly I guess.

The update did take longer than indicated. At some points I wondered if both my iMac and mbp were not locked up, but as I was doing other things I just let them take their time. I wonder if those people rebooted mid update or some

mobilemidget··on Ask HN: How PostgreSQL source code is 3x shorter than MySQL's one?
regular rpm install mysql 8 community edition

mysql-community-server-8.0.20-1.el7.x86_64

mobilemidget··on Ask HN: How PostgreSQL source code is 3x shorter than MySQL's one?
That the source is much larger I don't mind _so much_. But this recent thing mysql is doing worries me more.

ls -lah /usr/sbin/mysqld -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1.1G Mar 26 2020 /usr/sbin/mysqld

1.1G binary.

mobilemidget··on Deprecate FTP support (deprecated)
I remember it more from the times when illegal releases were raced to ftp servers to be downloaded by everybody, pre torrent.
mobilemidget··on Chrome is deploying HTTP/3 and IETF QUIC
Now you got my head all going, doing bad math.... As I simply wanted to write "That is not very 'green' of you" as in, compressed, minified, could be more efficient, better for the environment. But then I started thinking, is the saved traffic worth the compress (though once for static content) and decompress at all clients, increased cpu power, worth that trade off...

And I guess I am not the first person to wonder about this, any people wanting to share a bookmark/url, tia (so I don't have to use google... ;) )

mobilemidget··on Google has removed the option to disable autoplay from Mobile Chrome
I just noticed the first, Netflix like, 'are you still watching' challenge on YouTube, never had that before.
mobilemidget··on The Lounge – Modern web IRC client designed for self-hosting
aaah okay so it functions as a bouncer :) was a bit confusing as they mention 'forget' bouncers :)

thanks for the update

mobilemidget··on The Lounge – Modern web IRC client designed for self-hosting
Can you also in a nutshell tell me/us how the 'Always connected. Remains connected to IRC servers while you are offline.' works? Can't find much on the site itself, and tbh don't want to scroll the source code.
mobilemidget··on Ask HN: How does onlyfans.com work around the “no porn” Stripe rule?
Stripe merchants are not audited by G2 LLC for MasterCard? (*edit, maybe not with all banks I think of after 'submit')

https://www.g2llc.com/solutions/monitoring-solutions/merchan...

In EU they do, and if a string, or image on the site is not 'okay', you get denied for processing. And that's website wide, not just a single page. So in that line, I don't understand how stripe does this 'on the radar'.

mobilemidget··on Jacksonpollock.org (2003)
I do too! And initially had to broom my brain, who is this pollock person again?... then clicked the site, took 2ms to to revive brain cells :)
mobilemidget··on Facebook account now required to login to Oculus devices
And I bet some nice fat clause in the contract that prevents him from creating a new (and even better) VR headset?
mobilemidget··on Factorio and Software Engineering
I showed it to a friend last night, first thing he said, 'hey this looks a bit like programming'.

Me being a programmer only saw a 2D version of Minecraft (my initial opinion), and I thought I wouldn't like it too much. Been playing the demo non stop. will buy it later tonight... AFTER work... :+)

p.s. I hope it keep in development for a few years so I can play this with my (now too) little one too.
