mnky9800n··on SWE-bench Verified no longer measures frontier coding capabilities
This is why I made Zork bench. Zork, the text adventure game, is in the training data for LLMs. It’s also deterministic. Therefore it should be easy for an LLM to play and complete. Yet they don’t. Understanding why is the goal of Zork bench.

mnky9800n··on Silicon Valley is turning scientists into exploited gig workers?
Anyone can cherry pick examples to support that science is incremental (or not). The current structure of academic science struggles to reward creative thinking, struggles to support eccentric thinking, and struggles to move outside of their ivory domain based towers. It’s both a bureaucratic issue and one of hierarchy and power within science itself. I have seen far too many physicists resist changing how they teach because they have already figured out how to educate how dare you question them. I have seen far too many seismologists refuse to use non acoustic data sets because why wouldnt seismic data be enough? These are often even young people who refuse to step outside of their domains point of view perhaps from fear that they will never secure a faculty position. Additionally it is often times driven by university politics and finances. For example, Most R1 universities large revenue source is grant overheads, and yet most faculty have little say on how those overheads are spent because university democracies and leadership have been replaced with administrators building bureaucracies. I say this as a scientist for 15 years whose published over 30 papers, won grants, advised phds and postdocs, etc. the system would do well to change if only to give more time back to scientists to do science they find interesting instead of what can be keyworded in to grant applications.

mnky9800n··on Is Carbon Removal in Trouble?
Have any of the carbon sequestration companies sequestered enough carbon to matter? Have any of the carbon capture companies captured enough carbon to matter? So far it seems like no they have not.
mnky9800n··on Luigi-Inspired Arsonist Threatened "Our Way of Life," Feds Say
I have lived in Germany, Norway, and now the Netherlands. I think they all have socialism as Americans talk about it while also having capitalism. And none of those seem terribly corrupt.
mnky9800n··on Luigi-Inspired Arsonist Threatened "Our Way of Life," Feds Say
Essentially anything can be anti capitalism. Advocating for a free market instead of a crony market that countries like America has could be anti capitalism. Getting rid of the citizens united decision could be anti capitalism. Voting against corporate subsidy could be considered anti capitalism. Worker strikes could be anti capitalism. This list continues…
mnky9800n··on US v. Heppner (S.D.N.Y. 2026) no attorney-client privilege for AI chats [pdf]
Would a self hosted model also not be protected? Like because it’s classified as “ai” can those logs be read without a warrant?
mnky9800n··on Rainy-City.com
Well I started it as a project to learn react but recently Claude got so good that coding agents did most of the work. I wanted it to be completely client side so it can run as a static page and be hosted on GitHub pages. All of the art is ai generated from prompting the open ai image gen through the api. Except for the whales they are just wireframes.

This was all part of a project I did while at the recurse center.

I think you are overfitting to temperature as a variable in this decision making equation.
mnky9800n··on Vibe physics: The AI grad student
Grad students are hopefully semi autonomous and don’t need close supervision.

Another thought, I think ai enabled science is something of a panacea for the publication crisis of too many bullshit boring papers. That’s because no longer is that effort time consuming enough to suggest you need to write a paper. You could do it in two weeks. So now reviewers could just reject work for it doing enough on the assumption a coding agent could have done the work in a couple weeks. I have rejected grants I have reviewed recently on this principle. Why not papers?

I think it’s strange to dislike vibe coded things. I’ve seen a lot of cool stuff that’s mostly vibe coded. fomo.nyc for example. The problem is mostly the intention. I think a lot of vibe coded stuff isn’t solving a problem someone has its someone trying to seek profit. It’s no different from when smartphones first came out and people wanted to make a for everything when most of them didn’t solve any problems. The difference is nobody is wowed anymore by anything so your app that turns your phone into a beer kind of thing doesn’t exist in the vibe coded world.
mnky9800n··on “This is not the computer for you”
In high school we had a g3 Mac that we got Final Cut Pro on. It took forever to render a minute or two of video. But having a nonlinear editing system that took forever to do anything was way better than not having anything at all.

Edit: for true self embarrassment purposes you can see some of the films we made here:

rainy-city.com! rainy-city.com is an ambient rain sound generator that is also a kind of city simulation. it is my recurse center project. it's suppose to be more of an ambient experience than a city simulator. it's a total work in progress, I've implemented buildings but haven't made a PR yet because they don't really work the way I want them to, and so I had to rebuild the tiling for them. So right now, there is no city. lol. just rain. but eventually it will have all this stuff you would expect. there are whales.

Most modern news writing needs more flourish such as this.

Some people seem think that self promotion is wrong and work should stand on its own merits. I don’t think this way. It’s important to think about engaging and attracting eyes to your ideas. If you don’t why bother sharing them?
