mnadkvlb··on Ask HN: Do You Host Your Own Email?
used to be also on protonmail for a couple of years. acutally since they started, but i dont like the mobile clients or the bridge. also there had been some shady messaging in the last year (previous discussions on hn). what i also dislike is they cancelled a bunch of pro plans and replaced with way more expensive ones, and i had no way to continue my older plan.

i recently moved to microsoft o365 basic, which is good and also gives the smtp etc, so you get any client to work. The biggest pro i miss is a catch all mail solution, which was amazing for protonmail. i didnt have enough time to tinker with o365 to find out catch all mail so far, everything else it beats protonmail hands down.

Why is salary for the CEO rising to 3 mil $ a year for the ceo when the marketshare of the browser has been down by more than 85%. How would paying the CEO more salary and laying of the engineers solve low marketshare is beyond my understanding.[0]

Lots of UI changes like constantly changing menu items and losing control of the browser in general. Leaves a bad taste when useful customization options are removed and instead we get color themes sugarcoated as the coolest new stuff (every few years, sometimes its limited edition sometimes some fancy BS term).

Firefox unique ids: why they leave me a bad taste ? I have added a previous discussion from HN. [1]

I used to love the firefox from around 2017, but every new release removes some configuration options and we lose control. Maybe my views are full of too much rants, but i install firefox as the first thing on any OS for me and my immediate circle followed by ublock origin. I want firefox to thrive and be handled more like linux.

Even though i don't like the current direction of the management, firefox is my daily driver for development as well as browsing.

mnadkvlb··on KeePassXC: Beware of unofficial Microsoft Store listing
Ideally the publisher should be banned. I also think its easier to blame microsoft, on the other hand isnt that the job of a store ? I feel conflicted here about the responsibility.

Since I am a happy keePassXC user I would definitely donate time/money/both to push a proper release for the store if someone is interested

mnadkvlb··on The Ethereum merge is done
You should also go burn entire forests for energy and then invest the profits to plant forests to restore what you just did.

Dont want to be snarky, but thats the summary of what you just said.

mnadkvlb··on Ask HN: Speedtest.net shows random public ips
no, i have a static public ip from my isp. when i check on whatismyipaddress dot com, it shows the correct ip whereas speedtest shows random. If i refresh the speedtest dot net website, it sometimes brings the correct ip. (paranoid me thinks i might have a malware in my network/router, which is routing my network through a vpn maybe ? ) or the other explanation could be speedtest dot net has a problem with showing the public ips of the requests

I will have to write-off my rights, if my 20 bucks coffee machine kills me due to using a re-usable cartridge instead of the one blessed by the vendor /s
mnadkvlb··on Returning to the office is costing you untapped talent
I work with programming hardware devices which need interaction for work. I have never felt during this time i need people to babysit me or collaborate in person.

Most of the time, the work is split between our worldwide teams anyway, where one team sits in switzerland, other in germany, and then some in usa and canada. Even the support for our hardware is distributed in different countries and 99% of the cases totally works remote.

I think keeping it optional is the best way to leverage happiness/collaboration. Whwnever i need to collaborate with a team member we individually agree to meet up at office.

we had been doing home office way before pandemic, now all of a sudden businesses feel the need to have people a minimum number of days in office per week. I have actually seen hostile behavior from some employees to just come to office and chill all day during the ma datort office day since its a collaboration day anyway ;)

mnadkvlb··on Germany has seized control of Gazprom Germania
Maybe. but existance of leaders like Gerhard Schröder displays a different story.

(he is sitting on russian gas companies’ boards, after heavily going against nuclear). No shit the leaders failed the country for their own gains, seems like.

mnadkvlb··on Ask HN: Software with biggest potential for positive impact in 5 years?
I have similar experience with all changes from youtube.

Youtube doesnt even want you to see the length of videos by upcoming shorts feature which i absolutely despise. They dont want you to choose which media you consume so they can push more trash down viewers throats.

mnadkvlb··on Simutrans – Transport Simulator
OpenTTD is such an awesome game. I never thought i could sink so much time in that game. I still visit it every few months even though there are way more polished sims available. I thank again the maintainers

mnadkvlb··on StrongPity variant hides behind Notepad++ installation
heads up for pihole. I cannot, for the sake of my sanity, run internet without ublock and pihole. I teach all my friends and family how to install ublock origin.

If not for gorhill and pihole the internet is an absolute abomination of fb/google/media sites where everywhere u go, someone is holding a big billboard in your face. And god forbid if u block ads they guilt u to feel u are stealing from them.

mnadkvlb··on StrongPity variant hides behind Notepad++ installation
at this moment, if anyone pays google enough they will serve the result on top no matter what they serve. So if you want to survive malware, please enable an adblocker.

fun times with google and all !! /s

mnadkvlb··on Microsoft blocks EdgeDeflector to force Windows 11 users into Edge
Can someone recommend a linux distro where i can run steam and get most games. I know some games dont run on linux at all. I am using a last gen threadeipper and 1080ti.

at this point i am ready to jump the MS ship completely.

mnadkvlb··on If Apple keeps letting its software slip, the next big thing won’t matter
Of course its better to have a system which will not install the updates automatically and will just be stuck at restart (windows 10 wink).

If i disable apple updates on a macbook, it will show the notification but will never update without my permission, good luck doing that on windows.

mnadkvlb··on macOS Monterey's new network quality tool is surprisingly good
I hope this improves the network stack in ipads as well. Now that apple has same cpu arch on both ipads and macs, i expect better network tools for ipads.

I recently tried setting my ipad 5g as a hotspot but couldnt share the internet over the ethernet over my dock. If i could do that, it would enable the full 1+ gigabit 5g speeds that i get natively on ipad to the 2.5G port on the usb-c dock connected ethernet.

I also tried tethering through usb-c which gave only 250mbps.

Finally settled using wifi tethering which maxes around 600mbps.

It would be great if there is possibility to share 5g over ethernet, that would blow any 5g hotspot out of water with the chipset apple have put in the ipads.

mnadkvlb··on Macron says France will build new nuclear energy reactors
Exactly. Unfortunately the problem is the people are opposing nuclear and to make people happy Germany leaders will do what they can, to push the whole EU to their home politics drama. One of the biggest drawback of any union when the big guys are incentivized for something not aligning with rest of members. No wonder so many neighbors are unhappy
mnadkvlb··on M1 Pro First Impressions: Core Management and CPU Performance
I am sorry, i have a 10th gen dell precision for work. an absolute horror. if i am working on anything development, the fans are just so loud. absolute crap battery life.

if i run same vscode dotnetcore workload on m1 air, that thing lasts atleast 10hours on battery and no heat whatsover. better, the compile time is usually faster than 3800 bucks worth dell precision (on a 1200 bucks laptop)

mnadkvlb··on Widespread security risk identified in phones and Bluetooth devices

mnadkvlb··on New Colorways for Firefox 94
The current mozilla ceo is doing whatever they get paid to do by the advertising investors. They are driving firefox slowly to the ground.

Firing developers, nerfing the UI, removing feature which had be stable for years. You name it, every single change is to drive this browser to the ground. Mark my word, we wont have a firefox we love in 5-10 years max.

Makes me so sad :(‘
