African village boy who has been working in the data warehousing and BI space for over 15 years. My favourite programming language is SQL.

I sincerely believe if you have the right database design before you develop your application then analyzing your data will be a piece of cake.

Feel free if you want to get in touch discuss anything related to BI and SQL.

mmsimanga··on Jailer, a unique open-source database tool
+1. I work with data from different applications dumped into one database. Analytics. Often you cannot enforce foreign key relations and you need to define these relationships. Jailer allows you to define these relationships and then you can explore the data by following you defined relationships. This is so useful when working in analytics. I have never actually used jailer to subset but to explore data and to demo data to users. You can quickly find a piece of data by filtering on the field and then retrieve related rows in other tables. This is way faster than writing the SQL out.

Thank you to the author(s). Great underated tool that takes a bit of effort to understand.

I just took a quick look at condenser application you linked. Only supports Postgresql and MySQL. This is often the case with none Java tools. They tend to support a select few number of databases. With tools that support JDBC you will be able to connect to most databases. That is often my challenge as someone who works in BI.

Sigh. What you describe is an issue that I have experienced too. I work in Business Intelligence and only discovered Apache Hop by accident. I think the issue is lack of SEO pushes some great products down the search results list. I actually now search Reddit or HN for software suggestions for a particular area. Just using Google will give you the list of best marketed solutions.
mmsimanga··on The Windows desktop is dying
The assumption you make is that all these devices you use have a good internet connection. This isn't always true for a lot of people.
mmsimanga··on I'm betting on HTML
You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned WhatsApp. In my country in Africa WhatsApp is so popular so much so that mobile network providers even sell WhatsApp data bundles. If I want to find something, like wire fencing I start by asking WhatsApp groups I am in. Family, neighborhood and even high school friends. Typically I get a few numbers and then I WhatsApp the service provider and I get up to date information. The service providers can't afford up to date web sites. WhatsApp also has a feature to include a catalogue in your profile. This is for business accounts which are also free.
mmsimanga··on Political Polarization Comes for Marriage Prospects
Not an American. Watching from afar. We have a problem of too many teenage pregnancies in South Africa. Some of it is due to economics some of it due to social issues. What I don't understand about the US is how loud the extreme voices are. IMHO there is merit in messaging that prevents young girls getting pregnant. Whether it is promoting birth control or abstinence. There is also merit in giving options once girl is pregnant. No one solution is absolutely right and and no one solution is absolutely wrong. This being a technology site we know this off course because you can use Ruby, Python or PHP to create you SAAS and it depends on you the person.
mmsimanga··on Gig Workers Are Being Stabbed, Stoned, and Abused in India
You are right. I can confirm that South Africa has similar problems. A few Uber and Bolt drivers have met sad ends. My nephew a driver has been robbed a few times. Both Uber and Bolt allow you to pay in cash so drivers are targeted for the cash and phone. Some areas are just a no go at night for drivers.
mmsimanga··on All you may need is HTML
I am a budding woodworker. Not very good at it. Spent too much money on tools I have never used. My most used creation is a tablet stand which is basically two pieces of wood with a hinge joining them. I wish someone had given me similar sort of advice as the OP about tools when starting out. You don't need as many as you think especially as an amateur with limited space. Feels like web development is the same. I get that big companies have resources and people to maintain the fancy CMSs and SSGs but someone like me who writes one post every two years perhaps plain old HTML is best.
mmsimanga··on OpenAI is now everything it promised not to be: closed-source and for-profit
I think most geniuses are flawed. Yes Elon is a genius of sorts. I can't say what exactly but he definitely is smart to have gotten as far as he has. Luckily for geniuses of yesteryear social media didn't exist so they couldn't spread their flaws to a 100 million people at the click of a button. We just get anecdotes and the odd book from people close to the likes of Edison that he wasn't such a nice man.
mmsimanga··on FFmpeg 6.0
This. And imagemagick.
mmsimanga··on Minimum Viable Hugo
I tried both and ended up with WordPress of all things. I really don't blog and after a year without making a post I couldn't figure out my own Hugo site. I had also changed computers and my site wouldn't build anymore. I think Hugo is fantastic but probably best for regularly bloggers.

Rights come with responsibility. If you can fend for yourself then you can probably do as you please even as a child. However if you need someone to feed you and protect you then surely you concede some rights.
mmsimanga··on Leaked files reveal reputation-management firm’s deceptive tactics
In no way do I intend on defending the doctors. I am glad you quit and you don't have the moral dilemma. What has become murky for me is that often the truth lies in the middle. Doctor who killed someone isn't the best example so I will use technology as an example. It is often not clear when something goes wrong whether it was the technology, the manner in which technology was deployed, the skills of the personnel involved or some other external factor. If you talk to the people who chose the technology you will get one story, the people operating the technology another story and to the person who has to pay another story. This how we end up with companies successfully launching successful products using PHP and MySQL yet these same two technologies are trashed ad nauseum here on HN. Just who is right or telling the truth you will never really know.
mmsimanga··on War and subsidies have turbocharged the green transition
I don't have any reference but I expand it from any war to any crisis. Ask for a new server at work and you are ignored for years until the old server crashes and cannot be recovered. Suddenly they will be funding for new server and approvals done within the hour. It is sad humans too often need a crisis to realise what is important and focus on it. No crisis no focus everyone just pulling in different directions.
mmsimanga··on Meta to ask many managers to become individual contributors or leave
You lament the decision by FB yet you say out of the hundreds of managers you worked with only two were good. You are saying most managers aren't good and it sounds like FB agrees with you and hence decision. I also think this might be a good decision because I do think managers need to be able to set up programming environment and at least be able to navigate the code. Kinder of like how some retail companies make head office staff spend some time at a real store so that they are aware of operating environment at the coal face.
mmsimanga··on Big data is dead
Good point. Data is one aspect of making a decision. The other aspect is understanding the industry and environment. Often data scientists give just one variable needed to make a decision. In health care for example you need to factor in a whole host of legislation. You also need to factor aspects of the industry not reflected in the data. As an example doctors not wanting to use iPads is something you can't measure and can't force as company. Even though data analysis might suggest this is the way to go.

You have just described Pareto's principle[0] the 80/20 rule. It takes 20% of the effort to get to 80% but it then takes 80% of the the effort to finish the final 20%.

mmsimanga··on The magic of small databases
I see you decided on Wordpress, if you were going to use a CMS I think Drupal 7 would have been a good choice. Drupal has concept of entities and views. An entity as the name suggests is essentially a table and you can add all sorts of different fields to it. From simple text and number fields to images and fields that lookup other entities thus creating relationships between entities. Views is another construct that lets you choose how to display the entities. As a list of as a table a two possible views. Most of this can be done in Drupal 7 without writing code. I say Drupal 7 because you mentioned Wordpress. Drupal 8 and above is more of a developer framework and requires knowledge of Composer. Backdrop [0] is fork of Drupal 7.

I mean by all means use your card everywhere but I think we should make a concerted effort to keep our options open.

mmsimanga··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
This. I am a legal immigrant and have the papers and job to open an account. Some of my relatives aren't so fortunate so I have opened accounts in my name which they use as theirs. It get convoluted and I would rather I didn't have to do this but you are right it is a form of gentrification.

I am paraphrasing a quote I have heard before, "Pioneers get the bullets and settlers get the land." Might not be actual bullets but pioneers today have to deal with legislators, put up charging stations, develop most components from scratch and so on. These are the modern day bullets. If they don't get bought by a larger company the larger company launches a competing product with the benefit of the experiences of the pioneer.
mmsimanga··on New industries come from crazy people (2021)
I agree that most things aren't invented by one person. We stand on the shoulders of giants. I am okay with recognising all 20 or 100 people who contribute to an invention. Heck even the 1000 people. I am just having a hard time with notion that those administering the vaccine are the same as those who invented the vaccine. I use Linux promote Linux to those in my circles. I certainly do not view myself as an equal to Linus.
mmsimanga··on New industries come from crazy people (2021)
Interesting. In my home country in Africa building in the cities and towns is also quite difficult. There are all sorts of regulations along with corruption you have to deal with. From as far back as I can remember most people still wanted to own a house in the town or city. It was seen as more prestigious. We would bear with it and eventually build your home. However in the last 10 years or so with availability of solar panels and drilling boreholes being cheaper I have noticed a shift. People now migrating back to the villages. Two main reasons, the land is free and there are no building regulations. The village headman allocates you your land and you good to go. There are some rules to follow with how deep your pit latrine needs to be but that's about it. There has been an explosion of all sorts of building designs in the villages, some good and some not so. But lack of regulation has been good. Oh final note another "disadvantage" with building in village is that there are no title deeds. Homes are passed down to kids or other relatives
mmsimanga··on New industries come from crazy people (2021)
I think you are conflating things here. The gentleman who came up with the polio vaccine is the "crazy" person who decided not to accept the status quo. That polio should be literally a death sentence. I am not saying the hard working people who administered the vaccine should not be acknowledged, they should be but we cannot equate administering the vaccine to inventing the vaccine.

mmsimanga··on Maids trafficked and sold to wealthy Saudis on black market
This is the question we should be asking. As an African I know a few people, qualified teachers who migrate to UK and US to care for elderly there. I don't think the world wants to answer that question. I see headline after headline on the plight of refugees and immigrants and yet the people in leadership positions for those countries where immigrants come from are never really asked any tough persistent questions. I see the same leaders addressing the UN and often accusing the countries that accept refugees from their own country of ill treating them. Talk about hypocrisy. Anyway a root cause analysis is needed but everyone seems content to deal with the symptoms so the underlying problems causing desperation and seeking of greener pastures at all costs continue.

IMHO you can be a genius in a few areas of expertise but you cannot be a genius at everything. There is no such thing as a person who is a genius at everything so every person we call a genius is actually a genius at a few things at most and not all things.
