African village boy who has been working in the data warehousing and BI space for over 15 years. My favourite programming language is SQL.

I sincerely believe if you have the right database design before you develop your application then analyzing your data will be a piece of cake.

Feel free if you want to get in touch discuss anything related to BI and SQL.

This looks interesting but is a 1Gig download.
mmsimanga··on Windows 10 resists its end: usage share climbs while Windows 11's falls
Oops I should have kept my mouth shut. It will be interesting how the application developers react. Will Firefox or Brave browser stop supporting Windows 10 in a year's time.

My work issued device is on Windows and I keep a Windows PC at home just to make the switching between work and home simpler but I have no reason not to switch to Linux at home.

mmsimanga··on Windows 10 resists its end: usage share climbs while Windows 11's falls
This! From a hardware perspective I do not see any reason to upgrade. I have a gen 7 i5 processor and 16GB or RAM and I have no issues with my current device. I am not sure that Microsoft thought that part through. The problem Microsoft has is that Windows 10 has not slowed down unlike with older Android phones which tend to become rather slow and left behind in terms of apps and so on. With Windows 10 everything still works fine, VLC, Firefox, VS Code.
mmsimanga··on Rising graduate joblessness is mainly affecting men
I rarely win arguments against my wife and anecdotally neither do my male friends. As a manager the most vocal people reporting into me were always the women. Perhaps I have been lucky to be amongst strong women but I find the simingly widely accepted notion that women cannot speak up for themselves in this day is not convincing for me.
mmsimanga··on Louvre shuts down with staff sounding the alarm on mass tourism
Not to sound snotty but for some reason the more popular a place is the less inclined I am to visit it. But for a lot of people having your picture taken in front of well known places like the Eiffel tower is none negotiable. I love the lesser known places. They tend to be less expensive, less rushed and also have their own history.

I am not in favour of making popular spots like the Louvre so expensive so that only rich people can visit. As much as I hate the thought of it the only suggestion I can think of is to have some sort of booking system that limits the numbers yearly. With spots for schools, locals and so on...

mmsimanga··on Firefox OS's story from a Mozilla insider not working on the project (2024)
WhatsApp is the Internet in two countries I reside in Africa. South Africa and Zimbabwe. Anecdotally this is true for most African countries. Businesses and families depend on WhatsApp.
mmsimanga··on How I blog with Obsidian, Hugo, GitHub, and Cloudflare
I am in a worse group. Changed my blogging platform, wrote the obligatory post detailing why I changed platform and couldn't even get that obligatory post out. I hang my head
mmsimanga··on ClickHouse gets lazier and faster: Introducing lazy materialization
Windows still runs on 71% of the desktop and laptops [1]. In my experience a good number of applications start life on simple desktops and then graduate to servers if they are successful. I work in the field of analytics. I have a locked down Windows desktop and I have been able to try out all the other databases such as MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL and DuckDB because they have windows installers or portable apps. I haven't been able to try out ClickHouse. This is my experience and YMMV.

mmsimanga··on ClickHouse gets lazier and faster: Introducing lazy materialization
IMHO if ClickHouse had Windows native release that does not need WSL or a Linux virtual machine it would be more popular than DuckDB. I remember for years MySQL being way more popular than PostgreSQL. One of the reasons being MySQL had a Windows installer.
mmsimanga··on Harvard study finds seed oils healthier than butter – The Western Producer
Much like you I too have just woken up from under my rock to find this out. On the bright side it seems we didn't miss anything so as you were.
mmsimanga··on Postgres Just Cracked the Top Fastest Databases for Analytics
Not OP but OP seemed to be talking about analytical queries. Which typically summarise data over a period of time. For year on year comparisons this is summarising data over two years. So the query would have at least one aggregate function.
mmsimanga··on Silicon Valley Tea Party a.k.a. the great 1998 Linux revolt take II (1999)
I had a professor firmly in the Linux camp. Whenever he had to touch a computer running windows he wore gloves and goggles just like people working in biohazard environment would dress. I found it amusing rather than antagonistic. It was also a great conversation opener to discuss pros and cons of Linux.
mmsimanga··on 7 Databases in 7 Weeks for 2025
I work in a big none tech corp and I cannot install WSL so I can try out Clickhouse.
mmsimanga··on Autocracy and Stagnation: How Imperial Exams Shaped China's Destiny
In my observation kids with older siblings tend to develop faster. As in they walk at an earlier age. I guess they get fed up with watching the older kids running around and being left behind. Older kids also often act as deputy parents. So I don't think kids from large families surfer from attention deficit. I am a single dad and often struggle to keep my child attention right through the day.
mmsimanga··on Show HN: Open-source BI and analytics for engineers
Great to see BIRT mentioned on HN. I use BIRT to generate PDFs for clients. Modern BI tools are about interactivity and real time but PDFs still have a role in BI and BIRT does the job. As it uses JDBC to connect to data sources you can connect to most data sources. For many tools these days one of the first things you have to check is which data sources does it connect to. If you use a less popular database chances are your database will not be supported. I have worked in organisations that use DB2, Sybase, Oracle and so on and these tend not to be supported by modern BI tools. PDF generation also seems to be a snapshot of the page. So yes BIRT is a great tool, old school and a bit clunky but it does the job.
mmsimanga··on Ask HN: What would you do for developer experience
How long have you been at the company? Did you just join? I ask because no company is perfect. The hardest part which is what many comments seem to be saying is figuring out the "real" problems.

Let's take documentation. I tend to be the person who onboards people for source control. There is indeed a document buried in previous version of SharePoint that was not migrated to the new SharePoint. We only get new a couple new employees a year so it is just quicker for me to have a 30 minute session with new employees than to figure out how to migrate all the documents from the old SharePoint site. The 30 minute session is better than any documentation I will ever write. New employee gets to ask questions and so on.

mmsimanga··on Cloudflare loses 22% of its domains in Freenom .tk shutdown
In South Africa you could get a za.net domain for free. They stopped new registrations quite some time back as the spam era of the internet was getting started. I still have my domain and use it for all sorts of different things. From email to experiments.

Name server changes are still done through email.

mmsimanga··on In Mongolia, a killer winter is ravaging herds and a way of life
I think change is gradual not sudden. It tends to be incremental and also tends to be specific to one area. Often if you are involved in the change you don't notice it as much. My grandmother passed over 20 years ago. As a result of her passing away I didn't go to her village for close on 15 years. When I did go the changes I noticed were astonishing to me. 15 years back most of the houses were mud huts. Now most are brick building with mud huts being the exception. It took a while.

Anyone who spends time spreading new and improved ways of doing things I urge you to firstly continue to do so and to also realise change is gradual. Humans

mmsimanga··on Ask HN: What underrated open source project deserves more recognition?
https://art.sourceforge.net/

Business intelligence tool. Not the prettiest but it is like one of those all in one types of tools. Can connect to any data source that has JSBC driver and most databases have a JDBC driver. Reports can be simple SQL scripts, groovy code, JasperReport or created used Excel, Word or PowerPoint. You can schedule extracts and FTP files ... It is a developers BI tool.

Many politically motivated undertaking leave us better off. Modern day rocket engineers are literally working to get us to click on adverts. No I am not saying let's encourage politically motivated initiatives but not everything that costs a lot of money and doesn't necessarily workout is a bad thing. Look at how much was spent on Covid vaccine mandates. Now that was a waste of money and resources.
mmsimanga··on Institutions try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution
African liberation movements. The successfully fought colonialism, got into power and instead of dispanding and letting technocrats run the countries to improve things like roads, healthcare, access to water. They continue to "fight" imperialism and other ills that are literally impossible to define.
mmsimanga··on Nobody ever gets credit for fixing problems that never happened (2001) [pdf]
On sprint training. Me and a friend figured out that if you moved your arms fast whilst not running a full sprint it gave the appearance that you were trying very hard and coach didn't give you a hard time. Like most slackers instead of using the trick once in a while we over did it and the coach soon figured it out. The result was even more sprints. Needless to say our team too wasn't too good.
mmsimanga··on Considerations for a long-running Raspberry Pi
Not OP but I am in the process of upgrading my M93P Lenovo Thinkcenter. Uses laptop ram and simple to replace hard drive and RAM. I am far from a hardware guy.
mmsimanga··on How Group Chats Rule the World
+1 WhatsApp. I was in early of Facebook and used it delightedly for a few years. Then it just went spammy for me and I also didn't like that people seemed to drift towards using it to show off their lives as opposed to connecting with people. WhatsApp groups on the other hand by virtue of not being public are more personal. In some of my groups we have full on debates which I think if they were public some members of the group would be cancelled.
mmsimanga··on Show HN: Citadel – a Calibre-compatible eBook management app
I don't use Calibre long enough to be bothered by the UI. I use it for at most 10 minutes every few months. Import Epub, update metadata and send to device. Spend a couple of months reading the books then repeat import process again.
mmsimanga··on Ask HN: How can my mom downshift as a SQL developer?
I am not going to dispute your opinion but rather point out that people are different. Some people don't mind maintaining old systems and some people love being the person who created a new systems D using new technology. Both sets of people are necessary in our field of development and his mother sounds like she is fine with maintenance type of work.
mmsimanga··on Your small imprecise ask is a big waste of their time
Quite a few comments imply that asking for something in writing is mark of distrust. I ask for things in writing because I often forget. Run into manager in kitchen and he or she asks a question. It's not like I had nothing to do, I was probably taking a break from another task I needed to finish. By the time I am done with task I was working on the corridor conversation is now blurred. So I need it in writing as a reminder. I could also meet two managers on my walk to get coffee and get to vague requests. I am that employee, if you want something from me put it in writing.
