mmrezaie··on How the Sacklers shifted $10.8B of an opioid fortune built on OxyContin
I am not american and I remember hearing about OxyCotin for more around 10 years. So I wonder why controling this problem which casued so many loses of lifes (not necessary deaths), took this long to be the target of the government. I also wonder was there one of these stupid political shows that US is used to them now that was stopping anyone to handle it.

In the long legal battle I do not think this money is going to be recoverable (at least most of it).

mmrezaie··on Kindle collects a surprisingly large amount of data
How are the alternatives. Although i will miss my collection of books but I'm going to be in the market for the next ebook reader.
mmrezaie··on 'Coup 53' tells the story of 1953 campaign by MI6 and CIA to oust Iran's leader
I searched and I cannot see how you found 450 mil for population of arabs in te world. I even counted Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan and none of these are arbs.

Also, I talked to a palistinian friend and she thinks palistinians did not vote for Hamas becasue that was the choise. The other ones were just so corrupt. Any way your sentimate is just too reductive for a very complicated region.

mmrezaie··on 'Coup 53' tells the story of 1953 campaign by MI6 and CIA to oust Iran's leader
I agree on your second point though. Clercs were having so much hidden power at the time. Consdiering for 250 years since the inception of various religious taxes (5th of salary) and donations they were accumulating a wast amount of wealth.
mmrezaie··on 'Coup 53' tells the story of 1953 campaign by MI6 and CIA to oust Iran's leader
Yes and no. I do not think in that time frame that was being considered dictatorship. It was for the lack of legitimacy of Shah's case Mossadegh needed more power specially since parlemant was not that functional either.

You take Mossadegh's actions by the measures of the time. When I was reading about the history of the time, I fail to imagine what I could have done.

All in all, Iran's liberal movement by this coup might have been distroyed in a way it never did recover yet.

mmrezaie··on Ghislaine Maxwell arrested by the FBI
Eric is a reputable person, and he must know how to cite, I assume. I am sure Epstein has been a monster, but Eric lately is talking about physics and politics the way that I cannot even comprehend what is he talking about other than him being opressed somehow!?

Without the turture of listening the whole thing, does anyone know of any good resources of where he is learning about the Epstein's life? What he actually was doing with all these powerful people?

mmrezaie··on An ant colony has memories its individual members don’t have (2019)
Comparing this to ant colony algorithms and considering ant colony as a network of actors; Can we analytically measure how much more information the network has compared to the aggregation of the individual entities in the network?
mmrezaie··on How the CIA Overthrew Iran's Democracy in Four Days in 1953 (2019)
I think we are not that dependant on oil right now either and we are just used to continue the same failed tactics if the past. The people who make these decisions are just not making them economically and they are just used to continue the same policies.
mmrezaie··on Instructions per cycle: AMD Zen 2 versus Intel
But isn't CPI is just reverse of IPC, and CPI just makes the IPC score being bounded between 0..1?
mmrezaie··on My Python Development Environment, 2020 Edition
When I am working on large projects like this and the miryad of problems which python and its friends bring to us, I tend to see if projects like "nuitka" can solve those problems. For example if you need to scale you jobs ust imagine how many sysopen_at syscalls one single python script causes, and usually multiply that to the number of cores your job will have. Nuitka solves most of those problems by packaging everythin. It is almost as staticallly linking your code to run in the cluster.
mmrezaie··on My Python Development Environment, 2020 Edition
Well in sceintific projects you are working in HPC platforms which docker doesn't exists and there are many reasons for it (it is not just technical).
mmrezaie··on Edward Snowden in His Own Words: Why I Became a Whistle-Blower
The claim is so big that I think without those files he would have looked and treated as just another conspiracy theorist.
mmrezaie··on Understanding the working of X11 from the ground up (2017)
How do you think it should have evolved? I personaly think posix way of filesystem needs to be changed into specialized oject filesystems, but I am not sure what object filesystem for a UNIX OS should look like specially since it needs to be generalized into something all the other sub-systems can benefit from.
mmrezaie··on IBM has released the Power Architecture instruction set to the Linux Foundation
The name "POWER" was originally presented as an acronym for "Performance Optimization With Enhanced RISC" [1]. So yes.

mmrezaie··on A Deep Dive into AMD’s Rome Epyc Architecture
Do people like Jim Keller are the experts in finding the right balance? Is that why he and his team are so important?
mmrezaie··on A Deep Dive into AMD’s Rome Epyc Architecture
There must be a simulation for this kind of architectures to see what is the best combination of size and components while making it practical! I wonder if anyone knows something like that? A tool to minmax these choices and estimate if this can be done with resources they have got.
mmrezaie··on Xfce 4.14
I agree. I do not remember why did I switch away from xfce to this new gnome (3.32)? I hope they get faster with their progress.
mmrezaie··on Xfce 4.14
wow! This was unexpected for me. Changes happen so rarely with xfce and for me it is a good thing. But I wonder with all the optimizations going with gnome will xfce be any lighter anymore? I mean the next gnome versions, even 3.32 is resource hungry sometimes.
mmrezaie··on AMD EPYC processors come to Google, and to Google Cloud
Then you are not a target. There are many scientific workloads that actually can benefit from shared memory multi core processors like this. They do not scale properly in cluster. Data Science is very simple and obvious target. Developers also can benefit a lot. Have you worked on a very large project of mixed c++ and Fortran + for some reason python (Compiling or profiling)? This is god send. I am currently working on a single node with 2x28 core and I still need more cores. For licensing issues I cannot use more than one node for my task.
mmrezaie··on AMD EPYC processors come to Google, and to Google Cloud
I am not sure if any c++ compiler can actually compile a single file in parallel but usually you have many small to large files in compiling a project then "make -j" or "ninja" can build in parallel, and it is quite embarrassingly parallel task (but very memory intensive too).
mmrezaie··on 10 Years SeL4: Still the Best, Still Getting Better
> seL4 is easy to do wrong

This was our main stopper. seL4 would benefit greatly to teach how everything can be fit together, and where everything can be expected to go.

mmrezaie··on 10 Years SeL4: Still the Best, Still Getting Better
I forgot to mention that I had seen these, but I thought after so many years from L4's release something like isolating firmwares from the OS in our smartphones would have been done.

I am not aware of any other capability based and verified micro kernel in level of [se]L4.

mmrezaie··on 10 Years SeL4: Still the Best, Still Getting Better
Bored?

I don't think they only wanted to reinvent the wheel and I don't think trustability was one of the motivations of their design!

mmrezaie··on 10 Years SeL4: Still the Best, Still Getting Better
This is a great view on history of seL4. Is there a list of use cases where seL4 is being used outside academia?

Also, I would like to know why Google didn't go for seL4 and instead created Fochsia?

I wanted to mention that we wanted to see if we can use L4 for isolating our network filter from Linux kernel (trustability) but instead we opted for bitvisor (much simpler code base but not verified).

mmrezaie··on How is it like to be a dev in Iran
> It was narrowly focused on attacking a specific military project.

Stuxnet targeted some common industrial controllers being sold not only to Iran, and one usage was the control flows on the dams. Basically it just caused the control flow gates to jam. This one that I know of is not military at all!

mmrezaie··on Python consumes a lot of memory – how to reduce the size of objects?
I am a C/C++ programmer mostly. Is there good documentation for python development when I care about performance and memory footprint out there as a book or something that anyone can recommend? It was fun reading this but I like to know more.
