mml··on The vast but little-known fund of the Mormon Church
It’s “the eye of the needle”. It was a very narrow gate into Jerusalem, which camels had difficulty traversing.
mml··on Reverse engineering my router's firmware with binwalk
related possibly? what domain is this file from?

mml··on Tanka: Our way of deploying to Kubernetes
when I learned helm, I instantly thought "wait, this is it? it just templates yaml files, how does this even have a name?"
mml··on Share Now, formerly Car2Go, is leaving North America
those things were hilariously dangerous in the snow/ice. tons of fun :). I miss them too.
mml··on Psilocybin for major depression granted Breakthrough Therapy by FDA
I've read that street lsd-25 is vanishingly rare. it doesn't keep (degrades under UV), and it's hard to make (why make lsd when you can make meth instead?). I'm told much street lsd is other stuff. Dunno if true.
mml··on An Intern's Experience with Rust
I checked out rust around 5 or 6 years ago, and it was a mess of sigils for the borrow checker. Things have improved significantly since then. If you haven't checked it out in a while, it may be worth another look.
mml··on Safari 13 Is Out
wipr from the App Store is a serviceable ad blocker, not as good as ublock origin, but (mostly) does the job for me at least. I miss the ability to kill specific elements ad-hoc.
mml··on The Surprising Number of Programmers Who Can’t Program
1.upto(100).map{|x| (x%3 == 0 && x%5==0) ? "fizzbuzz" : x%5 == 0 ? "fizz" : x%3 == 0 ? "buzz":x}.each{|x| puts x }

I feel ashamed.

mml··on A crowd-sourced social media swarm that is betting Tesla will crash
Call me when any of this stuff works in snow.
mml··on 3M to cut 2K jobs globally, lowers 2019 profit outlook
They still have production in the US? they started moving out in the early 80s. My dad was involved in the re-assembly of the pipework for a specialized glass production facility (specialized lenses etc) physically disassembled & moved from the US to Xian china in '86. Even in the early 90's, most of their mech engineering was contracted out. Surprised they have 2000 employees to lay off tbh.
mml··on 3M to cut 2K jobs globally, lowers 2019 profit outlook
Pretty sure scotch tape (or any other consumer product) is a tiny fraction of their business. Their main gig is selling industrial solvents, additives, adhesives & abrasives to mining & manufacturing concerns.

Building up production facilities for others & the engineering involved in all that is a lucrative line as well.

Patent licensing too.

mml··on 3M to cut 2K jobs globally, lowers 2019 profit outlook
IMHO, they are a formerly great company that has decayed to... something less.

//dad worked there for 25yrs

mml··on Joe Armstrong has died
same. i had some interaction with him on twitter, years ago, and somehow he wound up following me(!). RIP Joe.
mml··on Piano Tuning
We had a deaf tuner. He “heard” through his hands.
mml··on Software Methodology: Why One Size Fits No One
XP wasn't a set of practices, or methodology, it was a set of principles. "Value working software" etc. The "methodology" flows from there: only do the things that help support the principles, get rid of everything else you can (up to and including many of the scrum rituals/meetings).
mml··on Wi-Fi is an important threat to human health
TL;DR: No it isn’t
mml··on Long Before Trees Overtook the Land, Earth Was Covered by Giant Mushrooms
TL;DR: we found these things years ago, one group says they're mushrooms, the other group says they're something else. The first group just published something saying they are so, neener.
mml··on Sandspiel – A falling sand game built in Rust and WebGL
dissolve the cloner in acid
mml··on Trying to ‘Save’ the Rural Economy
Dirt can’t be turned to gold. Film at 11.

Unfortunately, it can still vote for some reason.

mml··on The MAD Computer Program
every summer for about 3 years, i tried to key this into my apple IIe. Came up with all sorts of schemes to keep track of my place in the listing, but never got it to display more than a few lines of the illustration, which I declared a minor victory (the first 2 times, it didn't work at all!).

This experience ingrained my top row typing skills in a big way though...

mml··on The SOS in my Halloween decorations
Wow, they kinda buried the lede at the end there. He was apparently assassinated after the publicity, from the sound of it.
mml··on Copyright Office Ruling Imposes Sweeping Right to Repair Reforms
"Software Janitor" is my personal favorite. I should probably carry around a bag of pencil shavings on principle.
mml··on Ask HN: YouTube down?
A company like google would never rely on just a single company like google!

mml··on Ask HN: YouTube down?

mml··on Ask HN: YouTube down?
my aws-based builds just went from 5.5m to > 15m about when this started. aws issue?
mml··on Bullshit Jobs
I’ll answer for him. It’s a terrible, stressful, dangerous job, with insane hours & criminal working conditions, that pays peanuts. Might just be my opinion.
mml··on Two French rivers disappear underground in cracks and sinkholes
It's due to the karst topography.

There is very likely a sizable cave that exists beneath the river bed, the entrance to which had heretofore been clogged by sediment, which has been washed away by recent rains. Could also be that a choke deep in the cave itself has been washed out, joining it to another cave, which provided enough throughput to drain the river entirely underground.

mml··on Grain: A strongly-typed functional programming language for the modern web
Elm goes even further, insisting that you actually handle the Error types in some way.
mml··on De Beers admits defeat over man-made diamonds
they are perfect, without inclusions, bubbles etc. really the only way to differentiate them. ironically.
mml··on $11M settlement reached with Google regarding terminated AdSense accounts
I had an adsense account to profit from an IP address i randomly purchased from an ISP, which was formerly apparently a somewhat popular porn site. Racked up about $950 in a month, then they turned me off, something about violating terms etc etc.

It was a glorified 404 page with a google search widget & adsense ads on it.
