mmiliauskas··on Help find article on avoiding cheap dopamine and instead going for a walk
Thanks a lot for this link! The search didn't help, but top weekly posts did help finding it ;)
mmiliauskas··on Today Sci-Hub is 10 years old. I'll publish 2M new articles to celebrate
I always wondered if for knowledge as for ecosystems fire is an important part. Basically, is there a point where the amount of knowledge is so wast that it becomes impossible to reach the edge and come up with something novel.
mmiliauskas··on Pandas Manual [pdf]
Honestly "a great CSV reader" is the only thing it has going from my experience. Other then that, it is not intuitive, a kitchen sink of features, memory greedy.
mmiliauskas··on Schools opened, suicide attempts in girls skyrocketed
Of course we do, our toxic masculinity demands us to excel at everything...
mmiliauskas··on Fake Tesla, Apple stocks have started trading on blockchains
Not that it is bad, just useless, money always find the way around them.
mmiliauskas··on [dead]
How is it racist?
mmiliauskas··on Stonks Are What You Can Get Away With: NFTs and Financial Nihilism
Not sure why this being downvoted. Don't really have skin in the game when it comes to GME, but the naked shorting and creating short squeeze thesis has some legs, beyond the "stonks only go up" narrative. Burry was one of the first people to go long before all the craze.
mmiliauskas··on Medium sees employee exits after CEO publishes ‘culture memo’
Playing 4D chess ;)
mmiliauskas··on Show HN: Inflation-adjusted Hacker News
But can it predict the next financial crisis?
mmiliauskas··on National hiring experiments reveal 2:1 preference for women on STEM tenure track (2015)
Anecdotal, but I noticed this too in my last two employments. We would give coding tests and the scoring threshold for women would be greatly reduced, because we wanted to have more women around, instead of just guys.
mmiliauskas··on Cryptomedia, NFTs, and the Next Internet
It still blows my mind that CPI is not budging. Maybe it is true that we collect useless collectables during times of abundance instead of stuff that we need for survival.
mmiliauskas··on Ask HN: Buridan's ass paradox when choosing tools
My gut gets nostalgic, that is the problem :D
mmiliauskas··on Tether price manipulation
Did you copy/paste this from 2017? :D
mmiliauskas··on An English ruling on transgender teens could have global repercussions
Not sure why this is downvoted?
mmiliauskas··on What can we learn from slime mould?
Just go on reddit and click "Popular".
mmiliauskas··on A Frightened Optimist On The Future of Humanity
I just saw him on Joe Rogan podcast, he is selling another book isn't he?
mmiliauskas··on A systematic study of microdosing psychedelics
Agreed, I have noticed the same. Since my first trip I stopped drinking and smoking completely, started to cook most of my meals, making sure it only has the "right" stuff. Started to sleep more without a pillow, because I had this weird thought that "comfort cripples".
mmiliauskas··on A systematic study of microdosing psychedelics
Same here. Microdosing seems like a waste of LSD. On a full hit you at least get some strange ideas and it is a fun trip overall. That being said, for me personally as far as productivity goes, 2-3 days after the trip are the best.

Modafinil is much better suited for productivity. But it fucks up my routine and temper.

mmiliauskas··on Second-Order Thinking: What Smart People Use to Outperform (2016)
Here is my attempt at second order thinking -- where did he pull out that odds of success exponentially depending on "second order thinking" graph?
mmiliauskas··on Anthony Bourdain has died
I read somewhere that suicide headlines increase the probability of plain crashes.
mmiliauskas··on Sick of Myself – Algorithmic identity is a means of control and consolation
The magazine is funded by Snapchat. Just a fun fact.
mmiliauskas··on Rust by Example
its primary application is to bring more fun into life.
mmiliauskas··on Mars: Inside the High-Risk, High-Stakes Race to the Red Planet
I think you are on to something. You should really consider publishing this, just don't forget to add some graphs and equations. Hell, screw that, just package it as a book and start selling it for £6.99 a pop.
mmiliauskas··on Mars: Inside the High-Risk, High-Stakes Race to the Red Planet
Nick Bostrom's research costs £6.99. It is not a research, it is a quick way to make money while the window of opportunity is still open by doing cargo cult science.

I am yet to hear a decent argument about how AI will wipe out the earth. It starts to belong to the same category as politics, nobody knows what they are talking about, but everyone has an opinion. Even the so called "smarts". I remember there were news about Stephen Hawking being concerned about AI, if you watched his interview, he literally pointed his software to the "Existential risk from artificial general intelligence" wikipedia page and read the abstract... Elon Musk started by comparing AI danger to "The Terminator" scenario. Seriously a f* movie? How about we don't go to Mars because of the "Alien" movie? Now he says that "not all scenarios are benign..." - no shit, Scotty.

mmiliauskas··on Programming without objects
All this FP revolt kind of start to remind me Whitehead's and Russell's attempt to invent a formal system which would be paradox free...
mmiliauskas··on Ten predictions (2004)
My bad, JotSpot existed in 2004, so this might be legit. Spooky accurate predictions though..
mmiliauskas··on Ten predictions (2004)
One weird thing. Site is hosted in sites.google.com, and content is published on 2004, however Google sites launched in 2007, which came from acquisition of JotSpot, which was launched in 2006: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Sites
mmiliauskas··on Show HN: Email design slicing and coding for you.
Hi Colin, first of all thank you BIG TIME for making effort to make a comment! It just sucks when you make something, looks useful, but then nobody seems to get it... and it just fades away...

Now getting to the point :): 1) What it does? It takes a PSD file of your email design and spits out HTML code of email template with sliced images, that are used in that template.

2) "HN submission is misreported", for me it shows 2 points, when I visit the site, and it seems to be correct on HN too, there is a slight delay ( I have just noticed that myself ), but it is a more of a loose for me, because it shows less on my page, than on HN. HN doesn't really provide a "share" button, so I used this hack from http://hnlike.com. I am using it first time, but it seems to be legit...

Feel free to add some more criticism :)
