mmccaff··on Show HN: Startuplister – A startup directory listing service
I just added your site to https://github.com/mmccaff/PlacesToPostYourStartup

Good luck. I think that your emphasizing that it is manually submitted is important, and makes me expect that it'd be done with a higher level of quality than by an automated tool.

It has crossed my mind to automate a service like this, and then remembered back when there were competing search engines and directories. There were many automated, pay-for services that'd submit your site to them all at once, which of course never worked as well as doing it by hand.

Do you use two finger scroll on the trackpad? Instead of following your preferred scrolling speed, this plugin very quickly accelerates the page's scroll all at once on swipe, and then decelerates (like the swipe on a touch device) as the scroll loses momentum.

If you have to scroll, and are on a Mac, it will drive you mad. :)

mmccaff··on Honeywell Lyric thermostat
Regarding that last sentence, yes. It's a pretty stark contrast, even, to look at the design of Lyric's website in comparison to the rest of Honeywell's site. I guess there is no harm in trying to disrupt the disrupter, but I don't think that this is going to work for them.

Maybe they could have some success against Nest by playing off of some people's privacy concerns around Google.

mmccaff··on Ask HN: CTO wants me to leave
The "better developers" sound suspiciously like unemployed friends of his.
mmccaff··on Ask HN: CTO wants me to leave
You helped build something to a point that a job position was created for the CTO, and if you are passionate about what you're working on and eager to learn, it's unfortunate that he took the approach of telling you that you "are not good enough" rather than mentoring you and helping you grow as a developer. I'm sorry for your situation, it's rough.

That said, is this someone who you want to be working closely with? It could be something in your work relationship that is hard to get past. As others have said, understand what you are entitled to in terms of contracts and equity, and try having an open conversation with the CEO if you haven't already. Handle it professionally, and keep in mind that if you are desperately needed now (as you said) that you have some bargaining leverage. :)

mmccaff··on Ask HN: Where I can post my startup to get beta users?
Seems like this list needed version control. It's now available at https://github.com/mmccaff/PlacesToPostYourStartup
mmccaff··on Twitter Bootstrap Expo
Funny, after visiting the site I went straight to the comments to see if anyone else had the same feedback. It goes slightly transparent (not blank) but the standard hand/cursor pointer would be enough to let me know that the image is clickable, and the icon-forward does even more.

I suppose I might leave my mouse pointer hanging out in the middle of the screen a lot, but my intention was just to scroll through the site and look at the large pictures. Unfortunately, whatever is front and center (the one I want to look at) goes jarringly faded because my mouse is usually unintentionally hovering it. I could live with a more subtle opacity: 0.90. :)

That said, nice site. For something similar, if you have not seen it, you might be interested in builtwithbootstrap.com.

mmccaff··on Show HN: Given an API, Generate client libraries in Node, Python, PHP, Ruby
Well done!

Know what I think would be really neat? If it could be pointed at an instance of Swagger-UI, or use the same discoverUrl that Swagger-UI would use, and spit out the libraries from that.

If you're not familiar.. https://github.com/wordnik/swagger-ui

mmccaff··on Show HN: Codebrag v1.0 released - Code reviews made fun
It looks like this is a self-hosted solution like ReviewBoard. I was curious to know the installation requirements, specifically what language it was written in. I didn't see that on your site, and I didn't want to download it to find out. That'd be a nice thing to add to the faq.

The demo looks very nice. Slick UI, and I like the ansi/8-bit art motif! Congrats on 1.0.

mmccaff··on The 100 oldest .com domains on the internet
This list makes the rounds every year or so, but I always like seeing it; one of the domains is a special one to me, although I was not there at the time it was registered. UniPress Software (unipress.com, #80 on the list) was my first job while in college in the late 90s, and gave me the ~14 year experience of creating a product that went through all of the stages from "figuring out if people want a web-based application that does ___" to being a grown up, enterprise software that was acquired by a very large company. The two founders had real software-startup instinct before startup/entrepreneur was something written about, a love for what it is that we do, and are still close friends. It was a great place to be, a great time, and awesome people to be around. The two founders reached the age of retirement and sold the company years ago, but have been involved in two startups since, just because it's what they like. It makes sense that they would have bought a domain when it was a "pioneer" thing to do.

Most recently, seeing that Twitter was becoming very popular, Mark had been pumping out PHP code using CodeIgniter and made www.mediaroost.com in his spare time, a Twitter Management platform. It didn't take off, he retired it, but had a good time. Going way back, this is the same guy who wrote C compilers and sold Whitesmiths Ltd which released the first commercial C compiler.

(and going back before my time again, but interesting history - UniPress had also purchased Gosling Emacs which then became UniPress Emacs, controversially asking Richard Stallman to stop distributing GNU emacs source code.)

mmccaff··on Ask HN: Which hosting company to use for a small SaaS product?
Give SolarVPS a look. http://www.solarvps.com

It is easy to change resources, request additional IPs, and use the built-in DNS interface. $17.50/mo gets you a Linux with 2gb ram, 20gb disk, 1tb bandwidth and 1 CPU core.

The support team is 24/7, and VPSs come with a server monitoring service (SolarRay) that can alert you if one of your servers or services go down.

Also, a "One Click Application Install" feature just went into public beta. It might be helpful for what you are thinking about doing because it'd let you install, remove, backup, and restore multiple WordPress instances (among 200+ other apps) on your VPS in a snap.

Full disclosure: I am a developer at SolarVPS. :)

mmccaff··on Chrome 22 breaks things
I ran into the z-index issue yesterday with an internal application that uses Twitter Bootstrap. It had been working perfectly for months, and then became unusable. After the new Chrome was pushed out, Bootstrap's modal dialogs were hidden behind the backdrop and therefore inaccessible.

It might have been an edge case related to the layout of this application, but ultimately I ended up having to patch bootstrap.js to fix it. I felt bad about editing bootstrap, but should anyone else need a temporary(?) fix, it came down to this code in bootstrap.js

this.$backdrop = $('<div class="modal-backdrop ' + animate + '" />')

- .appendTo(document.body)

+ .insertAfter(this.$element)

That change had been discussed even before the Chrome changes, here

https://github.com/twitter/bootstrap/pull/3825

https://github.com/twitter/bootstrap/issues/3217

So, is this a Chrome bug, or a new spec that's being followed?

mmccaff··on Review my startup - Lean Domain Search: The fastest way to find a domain name
:) I agree. However, you might be losing "sales" to people who don't agree. Maybe that is a small group, idk.

But I see how you would need a two column layout (or something) for the results of longer search terms.

mmccaff··on Review my startup - Lean Domain Search: The fastest way to find a domain name
This is really useful, but is there a reason why you are limiting the maximum length of the input to 20 characters? I already came across a few cases where I wanted to use a longer phrase.
mmccaff··on Perl 5.14.2 is now available
"There's more than one way to do it" (TMTOWTDI or TIMTOWTDI) is a Perl motto. Perl was written with that idea in mind. This can allow developers to write "ugly" Perl -- or quite the opposite, as @peteretep said.
mmccaff··on MongoDB Interactive Geospatial Tutorial
Very cool, looking forward to working through all the lessons later. I was doing too many things at once and let the notice about help scroll by.

It might be worth keeping on the screen at all times. ;-)

mmccaff··on MongoDB Interactive Geospatial Tutorial
How do I proceed after "Go ahead and look at the collection"? In FF 3.6 it stops delivering messages after that one, and I don't see any way to advance.

In IE8 it gets a JavaScript error a few lines earlier, and stops advancing.

Am I missing something obvious in the ui?
