mlrtime··on I turned my security cameras into an automatic bird identification system
Negative, you can always use go2rtc or scrypted to proxy them.
mlrtime··on I turned my security cameras into an automatic bird identification system
Scrypted would work

Unifi provides local RTSP streams in different resolutions, birdnet will happily take a rtsp and strip it's audio out for processing (ffmpeg?)

They're all stupid relative to the posters understanding of tax law and finance, which on HN is pretty low.
mlrtime··on Lawmakers added $1 to car insurance policies. That money paid for Flock cameras
Try researching rural vs urban, most of this crime happens in urban areas, Houston, Dallas etc. Texas rural rates of crime are significantly less than Texas urban and the US overall.

Correct, the "No object is worth someone's life" is easy to say. However if you want a high trust society, it needs property rights. That only comes through enforcement of some sort.

Sorry that happened to you.

"None of any of the training I've ever had really covered dealing with a surprise attack from three motherfuckers at once. It wasn't exactly ideal."

Not much will, I practiced Krav Maga for years and we train for 3:1 , but a surprise attack that knocks you unconsciouses is hard to plan against. But it does teach you to be ultra-aware of your environment, who's around you, what attack surfaces are risky, objects you can use to defend yourself.

You may know this already, so maybe it would help someone else.

Now do H20, very harmful at high amounts.

People here have said even crazier ideas on HFT trading tax or wealth tax. People have lots of crazy ideas about taxation that clearly doesn't work. It's hard to tell if they don't get it or don't care because they actually just want it banned outright.

Few here would be a good politician or law maker.

Seems like they can, or you mean they can't 'make laws' that you personally care about?

In 2002, Hillary Clinton voted for the Iraq War. In 2008 Obama used that fact successfully to [help] win the Democratic nomination and went on to beat McCain.

Hong Kong and the UK at least when I lived there, had to leave and come back, easy in HK to go to China and come back with a fresh stamp.
mlrtime··on Dolly Parton has died
What do you mean by secular saint? Genuinely confused by the statement.
mlrtime··on Dolly Parton has died
"equal chance"

Nobody is claiming this or ever should. The claim is that there is real proof of "success" from dirt poor to middle|upper class with these music entertainer examples. Nothing ever will be equal chance, and that shouldn't really be the goal [depending on how it's defined and implemented].

mlrtime··on Dolly Parton has died
The thread is about Taylor Swift, arguably the most successful music entertainer of all time. The parents with upper|middle class gave a boost, but you absolutely cannot buy this level of stardom and hasn't been replicated anywhere that I know of.

America is 100% the place to be rich or poor, if this really is your goal, from Dolly to Jackson or Swift.

mlrtime··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
This falls into where your ideology belongs to "see" what is most likely:

* Amazon paid politicians in EU to craft and pass packaging laws that they would have to enforce/abide by, but have the resources. [Who and how many is anyones guess].

* EU Politicians meaning well, created policy to clean up packing with enforcement in all EU countries, maybe hoping large companies pay for the cleanup. Unintended consequences mean small shippers have a higher burden.

mlrtime··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
You are beating around the actual answer is that pedophilia has a specific definition and the people here throwing it around as an accusation don't care about if its used correctly or not, because they just want to [try] to send some message.
mlrtime··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
You might as well define pedophilia then too, right?

"Done well", but not as good as the US. [depending on which stats you cherry-pick]

The US was always about dreamers taking big risks for big rewards. There are a lot of things that can be fixed that don't remove that ceiling that other countries have.

They also used Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, Siemens, Hugo Boss, Bayer, Deutsche Bank, Allianz.

There is obviously a spectrum here, but none of these companies are inherintly evil, the people working at these companies aren't either.

The evil ones are committing the crimes.

mlrtime··on Sticky wage norms and the real wage cost of unexpected inflation
This is interesting and makes sense, the first thing I thought of is how California and the west started as gold rush, land, mining opportunities.

The people who risked their (and families) lives going west were taking very large risks for large rewards. And it's never stopped.
