mlrtime··on Tell HN: Cloudflare silently injects its analytics when you switch nameservers
You get something for free, they announce it and you complain about not having a bigger announcement?

If they had the banner and you missed it [or someone else] they would complain about the banner not being big enough.

How much speed are you actually sacrificing? I'd assume modern hardware can decrypt/encrypt TLS very fast.

Side note: I remember working for a company in early 2000's that had Sparc III 1U servers we had to buy crypto accelerators to do this until I had to convince them to use dell/linux.

mlrtime··on The federal keyword lists that canceled billions in research funding
Read all the comments here, at this time, there are no civil conversations. It's all a echo chamber. You won't find anyone who wants to engage in actual conversation about the topic.

They all went to reddit. It is essentially liberal social media now.
mlrtime··on US conducted mass spying campaign against leftwing and anti-ICE protesters
All of the ones that matter, just because the current president doesn't fit your ideals, doesn't mean society is collapsing.

All the doom-gloom feelings does not change that objectively and statistically the US and world is better off now that anytime in the past over long periods of time.

mlrtime··on AI isn’t outthinking mathematicians, it’s out-remembering them
De Blasio tried to phase out G&T, and Mamdani has advocated for the same. There is an ideological push that views these accelerated tracks as fundamentally inequitable.
mlrtime··on Asus Bike Booster
There are places in the US like this as well, but are general smaller / tight knit. I don't know of any high trust dense urban areas.

>That money is better spent on helping people who are not able to afford basic necessities, because that is why a lot of people commit property crime.

Do you have anything to back this up? You think people are stealing because they lack basic necessities? How are you defining this?

mlrtime··on Asus Bike Booster
"reliant upon crime to survive"

Do we have any sources that people are stealing to survive? What definition of surviving are we using here?

mlrtime··on Going Dark, and the era of law enforcement hacking
Not where I work. We have both review PRs.

What muscle and who "actually care", can you expand on what you're proposing?
mlrtime··on Grok 4.6
If you want to be pedantic, in the US the Age of Majority and Age of Consent could be different ages. So you could technically "request sexual content of a minor" and not be criminal?

Example, person is 17 in a state where age of consent is 17 and minor age of 18.

But this is "content", so I'm unsure of the law by state/country.

Agreed, I'll get a terminal full of text and I just reply "I don't understand this"

And it retypes it for a human, I'm doing this more and more lately.

Nice job, thanks!
mlrtime··on OpenAI’s head of ethics leaves less than a year after joining
Thank you for this, there is a a lot of speculation in this thread [Not surprisingly] but very little on the definitions, objective goals. Maybe I'm the one that's uneducated in this specific field, but I don't see anyone talking about what this actually means other than "be good".
mlrtime··on OpenAI’s head of ethics leaves less than a year after joining
I would eat my shorts if we could get alignment in a HN thread on what the top 25 "don't be evil" required ethical items for a AI lab would even look like.

The first 10 maybe easy, but we'd see so much disagreement even without money nothing would get done.

mlrtime··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
I've love to know more about how you did this. Was it the underground plumbing or your pump system above ground. This is one of the few areas of the home I have little understanding of.
mlrtime··on Silicon Valley misreads science fiction and undermines democracy
The 24/7 thing on the NYC subway costing so much has always been the tagline... I don't buy it.

The costs of running the NYC subway are no more unique than any other large city, some argue shutting down/starting up would be just as expensive.

The subway daddy[1] was my last straw at having any hope that it would be fixed in my lifetime, it is clear the people running it do not want any part of NYC subway "fixed".

Amazon also owns whole foods and it seems to be doing just fine. Maybe not the exact same as when it launched, but in many places it is one of the best places around to buy groceries.

One Medical, I had before/after Amazon and was never that impressed. They had nice offices and a good booking system, but the GPs were a couple notches above webmd IMO.

mlrtime··on Auto mode is now the default in Claude Code
Depending on the company, that sounds like a bad environment more than a agent issue, no dev/prod network isolation?
mlrtime··on Auto mode is now the default in Claude Code
How are ssh keys going to be leaked, the agent never needs to read them.
mlrtime··on Auto mode is now the default in Claude Code
I run in auto permission mode and it will run with 1 task and end to completion. On the rare event it needs to rmdir or rm -r a dir, the permission mode will stop the agent. Sometimes annoyingly... so its more like. "I've never had a bullet hit me yet inside a office building on the 42nd floor".

Are you implying that everyone in the US is taking unknown quantities of OTC medications?

Unless you have some data to backup this claim, it is tinfoil hat speaking.

mlrtime··on New Mexico court orders Meta to pay $567m over harms to children’s mental health
No, they're not. Not in most of the US and not compared to social media/porn. This is disingenuous.

The average 13 year old in the US cannot easily get a cigarette or a beer. Not impossible of course, but not as easy as porn/instagram.

mlrtime··on New Mexico court orders Meta to pay $567m over harms to children’s mental health
LCMS is more conservative as you know, There is a lot of disagreement between ELCA.

I know of many lutheran [cool] pastors who had earrings, pony tails, never preached a single word about strict abstinence. There are many gay members of the Lutheran church and are welcomed.

mlrtime··on New Mexico court orders Meta to pay $567m over harms to children’s mental health
>It's the responsibility of parents and other adults to keep children away from porn

The only way to do that [currently] is legislation. It is impossible otherwise.
