I browse in landscape mode on my mobile : on this website 75% of the screen is occupied by the top banner (25%) + sticky "recommended videos" banner (50%). Amazing how they managed to get me to quit their website so quickly.
mlok··on I built something that changed my friend group's social fabric
There is a very weird display bug on this site : when I access it in lanscape horizontal position, with my iPhone 8 on Brave or Safari : all the text is trembling, unable to settle on a size. Trapped in a resizing loop. If I rotate the phone verically it settles properly and then also horizontally. But if I reload the page (horizontally) it goes nuts again :)

I believe some people might find Zjs Components interesting for this matter :

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44290315

Paper abstract :

ZjsComponent: A Pragmatic Approach to Modular, Reusable UI Fragments for Web Development

In this paper, I present ZjsComponent, a lightweight and framework-agnostic web component designed for creating modular, reusable UI elements with minimal developer overhead. ZjsComponent is an example implementation of an approach to creating components and object instances that can be used purely from HTML. Unlike traditional approaches to components, the approach implemented by ZjsComponent does not require build-steps, transpiling, pre-compilation, any specific ecosystem or any other dependency. All that is required is that the browser can load and execute Javascript as needed by Web Components. ZjsComponent allows dynamic loading and isolation of HTML+JS fragments, offering developers a simple way to build reusable interfaces with ease. This approach is dependency-free, provides significant DOM and code isolation, and supports simple lifecycle hooks as well as traditional methods expected of an instance of a class.

The band Garbage became popular around 1995. Would be interesting to look for any correlation.

mlok··on Uchū – Color palette for internet lovers
A website about color scheme that does not respect my darkmode browser preference and burns my eyes on my large screen in the middle of the night with its white background. It also prevents my dark reader extension from doing its job (in all 4 modes!)

This little visual flashy aggression triggers a little angriness reaction.

I ended up escaping without reading what it was about.

If you love the internet, please respect dark mode.

mlok··on Before Squid Game, there was Battle Royale
"The Running man" by Stephen King was published in 1982, the movie starring Schwarzenegger was released in 1987 (another adaptation will be released this year in 2025)

The story is similar to a Robert Sheckley's short story from 1952,"The Prize of Peril" adapted into a movie in Germany in 1970 "Das Millionenspiel" and in France in 1982 "Le prix du danger" (same year as King's Running Man novel)

I would say "The Prize of Peril" is the grandfather of these books, movies and series, as far as I know. Battle Royale is the start of another branch, though : it's not one vs many anymore, it's many vs many.

mlok··on Short Message Compression Using LLMs
Yes that is why I specified it was non-existent. But the idea behind it is in the same vein somehow. Maybe what Sloot envisioned was something similar to LLMs.
mlok··on Short Message Compression Using LLMs
LLMs, and now this, make me think of the (non-existant) "Sloot Digital Coding System" that could be viewed as a form of "compression".

mlok··on Where can you go in Europe by train in 8h?
For some reason the result page keeps reloading indefinitely, and it renders the site unusable on Brave/iOS :(
mlok··on Show HN: Minimal, self-hosted exercise tracker
Add your browser data directory to your backup folders list, and restore that folder in case of a localStorage loss, that should do it.
mlok··on The risk of cancer fades past the age of 80
Misleading title. This is true about 5-10% of the human life. For 90-95% of the human life, the exact opposite is happening.

More honest title : "The risk of Cancer Fades Over 80 Years Old, and We May Know Why."

mlok··on Show HN: Eonfall – A new third-person co-op action game built for the web
I am on Brave on iOS and I have no idea how to start the game.
mlok··on Why is printer ink so expensive?
It's been my situation, I have had my Brother laser printer for... more than 8 years and I still run on the toner that was delivered with the printer ! Yellow ran low a few years ago, and the printer wouldn't print anymore, so I select "print black & white", and the printer happily keeps working using the black toner only :)

mlok··on We outsmarted CSGO cheaters with IdentityLogger
What about some sort of shadowbanning ? Or "shadowsegregating" : I mean if you detect and group cheaters so that they play with other cheaters ? Leaving normal players alone ? (I am not a player, I don't know how these multiplayer games work, I'm just wondering)
mlok··on Traveling with Apple Vision Pro
I was wondering exactly the same : did the flight attendant consent to being in a video on the internet while doing her job ?
mlok··on How electric trains work and why they make interesting sounds [video]
It's a mystery to me how the camera is mounted for the video at 7:55.

https://youtu.be/IRJIJPTUXXE?t=474

A drone ?

The camera follows the train so precisely that it seems it is mounted on the train, but it passes on the other side of some objects so it cannot be mounted on it.
