mlh496··on Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet?
I noticed this, too. I suspect their classifiers which prohibit certain tasks or require user permission for others is the reason for this.

However, the moment that someone uses a Chinese model without guardrails to commit an AI-powered 9/11, DC will rush to ban Chinese models. (A happy side effect will be to protect American AI profits.)

So the lack of guardrails is a very risky proposition...

mlh496··on André Weil and the Hodge Conjecture
I think Mathematica will survive because the alternative is for AIs to write the code to do a computation or use an open-source library. And there are many calculations for which there simply isn't an open-source tool for evaluating.

But I wouldn't be surprised to see Mathematica being used primarily as an AI plugin in the coming years. Mathematica now has an MCP which I use regularly from Claude Code. It's nice not having to write the lengthy Mathematica expressions by hand.

I've been using the Brave browser for years. I just turned off all the crypto stuff. How does Firefox today compare with Brave today?
mlh496··on US plans online portal to bypass content bans in Europe and elsewhere
Sad that western Europe is pushing so hard for limits to free speech & privacy. I'm not surprised given their history, but it's sad nonetheless.
mlh496··on the US government has to start paying for things again
Congress writes the budget, not the President's administration. What was notable about the late 90s was for the first time in 40 years the Democrats did not control the House of Representatives. One could argue that divided government forces compromise which is a good thing. Personally, I think the financial problems in the United States transcend political party.
