Reading this as a person with disability leave a bad taste in my mouth. I wonder what people like this would do if faced with a real lifelong challenge?
For those of you with a little CPU time to spare, the fishtest project should be mentioned here. Stockfish has a "CI" which self-plays all PRs before accepting them. The client is easy to install. Go get it!
The "technical" term for what you describe is blundering. The winner amongst two humans playing each other is mostly defined by who blunders first. Some of these are sometimes so obvious that we have a take-back rule amongst friends for obvious giveaways. Mind you, its not "can I take this move back", its "you want to make another move, this one is too stupid"
I wonder how much it costs to walk up to one of these forecasters and buy the first place. Given how popular forecasting seems to be, I am convinced there is a good bussiness model behind.
I've said that in a comment about a similar article recently, and it needs to be repeated here: Google is actually helping big players to harass small groups into submission. And they are using their copyright system as a weapon. But nobody questions the sloppy execution of that self-declared law enforcement. I guess they are deliberately trying what they can get away with, to set the ground for future harassment.
Students contributing to open source to get better grades should have a flag on GitHub so project maintainers can easily recognize them and treat their contributions with an extra bit of care. I've been consulted by students (and PhDs) regarding their final project (not strictly IT related) and the song was always the same. The primary objective of that person is to get uni finished. Quality or usefulness of their work is always second place. What counts is the grade they get in the end. I always felt used if not "raped". These days, I turn all students down.
I would step in and do the work you are not doing on the 5th day. We will see how employers deal with this. "I want to work from home, and I want to work less", lets see if this works out for you people...
I'd be seriously interested in it as a mobility aid, as a "replacement" for a guide dog. Could be useful to some types of users. But yes, thats not really the average guy... I guess it is like with Alexa. First, there is the product, users will find usecases for it, and they will try fucking hard to legitimize their own investment.
I submit that doing a job that you like is already enough to make you happy and productive. Trying to boost both with a day less of work is pretty obviously just trying to cure a symptom. I always liked to go to work, even after 22 years of doing basically the same job. I even missed going to work during the pandemic. Just a thought...
Apple has a ton of internationalisation bugs. I am a VoiceOver user, so some of the things I "see" might not be obvious to other users. When I started with iOS 2012, umlauts in PDF documents were not pronounced correctly. This basically made PDF reading unusable for documents in my native language, because umlauts are quite prominent in german. When I entered my date of birth into the contact app, I immediately found out someone at Apple had placed an exception for "1979" into the pronounciation database. All other 4 digit numbers are spoken correctly in German, except for 1979 and 1234. These are being spoken in english, 1979 as "Nineteenseventynine" and 1234 as "one two three four". Thats not the only weird exception. I could go on and write a full list. And all of the bugs (except for the umlauts in PDF thing) have never been fixed since I first noticed them. Some do exist since 9 years!
Heck, early version of basic for windows had translated function names. I dont know if MSFT is crazy enough to do that these days, but it was a major PITA and pretty hilarious back then.
+1 for using the term "storytellers". I call "journalists" Schreiberlinge in German, which has a similar conotation. If I have learnt one thing during the pandemic, that even supposedly serious media is not to be trusted. I always knew (from first hand experience of being interviewed) that newspapers are really not much more worth then other things you use to whipe stuff... After the pandemic, I know you can basically ignore all the media outlets. All they do is generate interactions and spread badly researched lies.
I dont know how you want to measure relevancy. The topic is likely relevant to those which are still using IRC actively. Since you seem to imply in your messages that you have moved on and left irrelevant technologies like IRC behind, I guess it is save to assume it isn't relevant to you as much. However, standing up and claiming "this drama" (with a derogatory tone) is irrelevant smells a bit of egotistical behaviour. Of course it looks irrelevant to you, and apparently the world has to agree with your view since you are a member of the majority.
Maybe I am just different. I never liked the mainstream. I never liked too well known festivals. My experience is, if almost everyone is there, I dont want to be.
To me, IRC is an exception because it has no inherent accessibility problems, like all the modern chat platforms have.
Here is an experiment: Find a blind person and make them join your favourite discord or slack channel. Make them participate for real. Not just login and logout again.
Now, do the same experiment with IRC.
10 years ago, this phenomenon was called digital divide. These days, people like you call it the inevitable future.
IRC is still the only group chat technology that I use semi-regularily. Slack, Discord, Matrix, FooBar, and the next yet unnamed hype can very well stay where they are. I dont care.
Even if the accuracy and error rate surpass humans, every death due to an AV failing is one death too much. However, most people seem to be happy with a failure rate lower then my grandma...
My commute is a 5 minute walk. And thats no accident. I very deliberately chose my flat to be quite near to work. Has saved me about 5000 hours of commute time so far.
Where I live, people are apparently not a chicken as where you live... Most of my coworkers are happy to go back to the office. I guess we have about 10% which would like to have full WHF. OTOH, I also dont care what the majority wants. What counts to me is what I want.
I cant wait until I can go back to the office 100%. WFH, while convenient, is something I never wanted. I didnt want it 20 years ago when I started to work, and I dont want it full time today either, even with the covid experience. Human interaction is not tradable, and online conferencing sucks even more then a real meeting.
