Looking into a mirror can really hurt. Guess what, I dont care. I have been belittled, ignored, swept aside, manhandled, pushed across a street, you name it. I dont feel particularily bad if someone outside of my bubble is confronted with how their priviledged utterings make other people feel.
Yeah, "screen curtain" is a pretty essential feature for some of us. I also do that on my Linux laptop. Helps againnst sholder surfing and saves hours of battery time.
The daughter of a coworker of mine has an elementary-school friendship with a blind girl. When she wanted to write a letter to her, I embossed the text for her, because, you know, I can write braille. I was told the little girl was very thrilled to receive a piece of paper she could actually read. But I guess this sort of human interaction isn't worth the effort, right? :-( Sad to read your attitude.
iOS actually has a multi-touch based braille keyboard built-in. So you can have a rather similar behaviour, however, without extra hardware, with native iOS. In Settings > Accessiblity > VoiceOver, add "Braille keyboard" to the rotor options, and then use two fingers in a circular motion until you hear "Braille input". You can now hold the screen away from you in landscape mode, and use three fingers from each hand to type 6-dot braille.
"Daily Gratitudes", "Self Love"... This sort of curated communication reminds me a lot about how it feels to be around believers... It makes me shiver. Authentic communication cant be based on a framework of acceptable topics preselected by, well, whom? Besides, less screen time is the only way to go to strengthen friendships.
Fully agreed. It is somewhat concerning that so few people realize this. It seems tech is the answer to everything these days ... Nothing beats catching up with friends by actually visiting them and sit down for a few hours of talk.
1. Tech is not the solution to everything. Am I the only one to notice the absurdity of needing yet another app to "connect with friends"? I can see the use of tech to reach out to people you know from abroad, but... Whats wrong with Facetime or similar tech?
2. The template questions seem overly intrusive to me. I'd much rather answer "any covid hobbies?" then any pre-written gratitude nonesense, esp. in written communication. Philosophizing about the world is something best done in a face-to-face situation.
This is absolutely great. Seeing this for the first time somehow reminds me when I learnt about Google. many years ago. The salespitch for google back then was "They have all the linux related docs and infos indexed". The promise of this engine seems even more promising. A search engine specialized in text, look 'ma! I hope this grows and gets the user attention it deserves. Google has becomes so ad-infested in the last 3 years, its time something replaces it.
Indeed. Besides, you dont even need the lyrics to infer who is insane. The only major goal in life being world domination is enough proof in my book...
Star Wars has lost me. I loved 4,5,6, and I found 1,2,3 at least exciting to see the story arc closed up. But what came afterwards was pretty much unwatchable. I went to the cinema for Rogue One even, but dont remember a single plot-line. Thats pretty unusual for me, since I uslally remember storylines from movies I watched many years ago. But this stuff just didnt leave any impression at all.
Indeed. Its a clear case of trusting the cat to keep the cream. But most poeple dont seem to notice, which is indicative for how strong the illusions the churches have created are.
What I find most problematic is that there is clearly a mix of difference incentives at play. At the one hand, scientists are not getting tired of waving the scientific method about to the uninitiated. Claiming science has no agenda and is only interested in hard data. But on the other hand, it is rather clear that the career of individual scientists depends on how much they publish. Yes, there is peer review, but no, that doesnt help, because people form networks and have friends and allies. So, how do we ensure that the common people trust science more? I think we should start by ridiculing publications like this, if the scientific community by itself is not capable of filtering such noise out.
PulseAudio was and is the disaster that the LAD community has already predicted. Whenever a package manager forced it onto me, I had to figure out how to get rid of it again. Hopefully PieWire will improve things.
trained professional my ass. I have a disability, and I tell you what: Even the people "specialized" in certain disabilities usually have no idea what the fuck they are talking about. But they get good pay and are being treated like specialists by those which have even less of an idea... Outsiders usually have absolutely no idea whats going on.
Well, I am "outside of Germany" and I know the site since at least 15 years. May I remind you that europe consists of more countries then just Germany?
This is nothing new, and a worldwide phenomenon. If you have to read about this in nytimes for the first time, please get a life and talk to your fellow humans. Its a mixture of personell being overworked and sometimes being plain mean. This is the price we pay for not investing enough into the system that cares for the elderly, or, in other words, this is the price for having outsourced caretaking. And dont fool yourself. If you put a relative into a nursing home, you have absolutely no idea how they are treated after you close the door behind you.
Hehe, this sites exists since, well, a loooong time. I typically use it as a directory, to know whats available in a certain category. But I really wonder how this site made it onto the frontpage. This is a bit like posting "amazon.com" :-)
In an experimental setting, I was once given a screwdriver to feel the field around an MRI machine. They asked me to be very careful of course, because loosing the grip would indded have ment the machine would need to be shut down...
