mkurz··on Shipping Multi-Tenant SaaS Using Postgres Row-Level Security
Be aware when using RLS with views: By default the RLS policy will be executed with the permissions of the owner of the view instead with the permissions of the user executing the current query. This way it can easily happen that the RLS policy will be bypassed because the owner of the view is a admin account or the same account that owns the underlying table (see the the gotchas section of the original post).

However, upcoming PostgreSQL 15 adds support for security invoker views: https://github.com/postgres/postgres/commit/7faa5fc84bf46ea6... That means you can then define the security_invoker attribute when creating a view and this "... causes the underlying base relations to be checked against the privileges of the user of the view rather than the view owner" (see https://www.postgresql.org/docs/15/sql-createview.html) PG15 beta 1 release notes: https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/postgresql-15-beta-1-r...

> Looking at their website it seemed to have not been updated in years. It even contained a widget for Adobe Flash, a very old way of creating animation on websites.

Funny they explain what Flash is. It's just two years since it's officially dead, however Flash used to be around everywhere until at least ~2015. For me it feels strange there are younger people not knowing what Flash is... I am getting old ;)

mkurz··on It takes $420k per year to run Lichess
Really? Can't speak for France, but it's definity low, specially for a senior dev. USD 56 470,69 equals EUR 49 465,78 as of today. You still need to pay taxes and (compulsory) social insurance from that. IMHO this is low, in some (western) european countries that amount may is junior dev entry salary IMHO. But someone responsible for a project that big could easily start at EUR 90 000,- or more (~USD 100 000,-). At least this is my experience. Experienced senior devs in German speaking countries I know, which know what they are talking about, don't consider to work for less than EUR 80 000,- gross per year, for some this is the lowest base line. Just recently talked to a friend about that who works for a middle sized (~200 people), not very well known software company in Germany.

mkurz··on macOS Setup after 15 Years of Linux
I am thinking about getting a MacBook Pro M1 Max as well, however I would prefer running Linux on it... hopefully Asahi Linux (https://asahilinux.org) is usable soon.

Or is there (or will there be) a serious competition to the MacBooks in 2022? It doesn't look like.

mkurz··on Anna Kiesenhofer: Mathematician, amateur cyclist, Olympic champion
> She was with a pro-team

Only in 2017. She quit a Belgian pro-team shortly after she joined [1]. Quote from the linked article: "I noticed that professional sport is too much physical and psychological stress for me and that I prefer to only do hobby sport"

> but it isn't a simple amateur beating out all the pros story.

IMHO she probably is not really just an amateur, but also not a pro. I mean, she is 30, doing her post-doc at EPFL Lausanne right now... It's not like training is the only thing she spends her time with. Also not sure if she has sponsors.

And to everyone here on HN saying that the Dutch riders didn't know there was someone in front: These are professional athletes, competing at the olympics. If the Dutch's claim is true, it's their own fault. Knowing who is/how many are in front is part of the game. And they lost that game. Also Kiesenhofer was ahead 1:15 minutes. It's not like that's nothing. Even if the Dutch would have chased her, is it sure they would have beaten her? I am not sure...

The point being: Kiesenhofer won, no matter what.

Except that she is from Austria, studied in Vienna, which is also in Austria. She has absolutely nothing to do with Germany.

mkurz··on Get notified when a file on GitHub has changed
If you use an rss reader, the easies solution how to track a file or a folder in GitHub is by just adding .atom at the end of the url when looking at the commits.

For example: https://github.com/playframework/playframework/commits/maste... becomes https://github.com/playframework/playframework/commits/maste...

You can do that with every commit url in GitHub, be it for a folder or a file. Just add it to your rss feed reader, done.

mkurz··on TimescaleDB 2.0 released, now distributed multi-node
@Timescale devs,

what are the differences between Timescale and Citus? When do I want to use which? AFAIK Citus scales multi-nodes long time already, your solution of hypertables reminds me of Citus distributed tables... Citus can do rebalancing long time as well... And much more. Would love to hear what you think makes you different.
