mkopinsky··on Level Playing Field
Because voices other than Matt's prevailed, presumably.
mkopinsky··on My Philosophy on Alerting: Observations of a Site Reliability Engineer at Google
If something not-so-bad-this-time happens while I'm eating dinner, I am not taking time right then and there to figure out exactly when we should and shouldn't alert for that event. That demands a level of analytical thinking that can take place during work hours.
mkopinsky··on Poll: Did you “drop Dropbox”?
This is not a poll of HN users. It's a poll of HN users who clicked a headline about dropping dropbox.
mkopinsky··on Ask HN: How do I set up a HIPAA-compliant server?
As a potential customer, I want to let you know that you really should fix all the typos and the like on your website. It really gives a poor first impression when I see things like:

    * 5 X VPN's (no apostrophe needed; what does this even mean?)
    * 1 Dedicated IP Addresse
    * Header/footer links open in a new tab.
    * Some numbers are listed as 800, some as 1-800.
    * Data center addresses have a comma at the end of the first line. That's not how US addresses are written.
    * Headquarters address is all on one line.
All of these indicate, in my mind, a lack of attention to detail. This is absolutely the last thing I'd want in my compliance provider. (More charitably, it probably indicates a lack of familiarity with either English or certain US conventions, which is I'd forgive in some vendors, but not when it comes to HIPAA compliance.)

Please don't go and fix the specific things I listed and think you're done. You need to significantly rethink the impression you're giving.

mkopinsky··on Richmond Italian restaurant waging war on Yelp
Yelp is pointing out to the restaurant that they're asking customers to violate the customers' TOS with Yelp. Nowhere is it insinuated that they themselves have an agreement with yelp.

It is not being done behind the restaurant's back. The restaurant is paying the customers (in free pizza) to leave the feedback.

mkopinsky··on Richmond Italian restaurant waging war on Yelp
The emails don't show that. Yelp sent a boilerplate letter that they presumably send to everyone caught incentivizing customers to leave specific feedback on Yelp, and they replied with an immature parody. Where do you see (in the two emails in that news article) that they asked to be removed from the site?
mkopinsky··on Show HN: Play music by typing

    <script data-main="js/app" src="js/require.js"></script>
That data-main attribute is a magic signal to require.js to load js/app.js. From there, app.js tells it what else to load.
mkopinsky··on Gooey: Turn command line programs into GUI applications
He just committed a fix for this.
mkopinsky··on Poll: What is your #1 productivity killer?
I've found success at times with the pomodoro method, and the pomodairo tool. I have a ticking clock on my desktop, and if someone comes to bother me, I can easily point to it and say, "Can this wait another 12 minutes?"
mkopinsky··on The Great Colorado Weed Experiment
The data on broad societal effects of legalization. Did you read the thread??
mkopinsky··on The Great Colorado Weed Experiment
Do you buy your alcohol on the black market?

Once the legal market for marijuana matures, why should it be any different?

mkopinsky··on My Treadwater Desk
I tried to come up with the mental map of how I came up with that, but I think I was just subconsciously channeling Calvin and Hobbes. (Nothing wrong with that, I guess...)
mkopinsky··on My Treadwater Desk
It's great when someone links the comic that I didn't even know I was referencing.
mkopinsky··on My Treadwater Desk
I assume that this treehouse will be complete with a "No gurlz allowed" sign?
mkopinsky··on Yale students made a better version of its course catalog. Yale shut it down
I assume that OP meant:

> If a professor doesn't publish, he/she can lose [a chance to gain] tenure

mkopinsky··on Get Facebook WiFi for your business
Whenever I open the FB app on my Android, the GPS notification flashes for a moment. This information I'm sure is tracked, but is not shared.
mkopinsky··on Get Facebook WiFi for your business
The main thing here that I didn't realize is that it seems there is ALWAYS an option to skip checking in, either by clicking "Skip checkin" or by getting the code from the cashier.
mkopinsky··on My deadly disease was just a 23andme bug
No, the (necessary) risk you take is that you find out true information that you didn't want to know. The risk that you shouldn't have to take is that the testing company sends you BS results.
mkopinsky··on My deadly disease was just a 23andme bug
I think many of the commenters here are fans of 23AM, and are hoping they get their regulatory shit together so they can provide an even more valuable and validated service.
mkopinsky··on My deadly disease was just a 23andme bug
The lesson here is don't use shoddy diagnostics. CT is a proven technology, which gets things right the vast majority of the time, and also has a false positive rate. 23andMe is relying on technologies or algorithms that have not undergone the requisite scrutiny to lose the label (in the FDA's opinion) of "shoddy diagnostics", and are thus far more likely to have a higher false positive or false negative rate.
mkopinsky··on My deadly disease was just a 23andme bug
That letter was linked from the article itself, and is what prompted the fact that this discussion is happening now.
mkopinsky··on Why It's So Hard to Get From Brooklyn to Queens
Can someone who's taken the new MTA Select Bus Service busses comment on whether they are smoother than regular busses? I took an MTA bus today for the first time in a long while and it was uncomfortably bumpy.
mkopinsky··on Why It's So Hard to Get From Brooklyn to Queens
For example, consider this journey:

https://www.google.com/maps/preview#!data=!1m4!1m3!1d83509!2...

30 minutes by car, 1:18 by public transit.

mkopinsky··on Why does the alarm clock snooze button give you nine extra minutes, not ten?
You can count to five while still snoozing? I know I couldn't...
mkopinsky··on Wikipedia editors, locked in battle with PR firm, delete 250 accounts
> As the gentleman who actually invented [citation needed]

Is there a story here?

mkopinsky··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
If you're willing to share, I (and I'm sure others here as well) would be curious to get some kind of sense of how you wrote out the agreements.
mkopinsky··on UAV Provides Colorado Flooding Assistance Until FEMA Freaks Out
Is the UAV flying in IFR conditions? (Serious question.) If the goal is photography, I don't imagine it would be very useful if so.
mkopinsky··on The CEO of Panera Bread attempts to live off food stamps for a week
Why was this downvoted?
mkopinsky··on E-ZPasses Get Read All Over New York (Not Just At Toll Booths)
The reverse is true.
mkopinsky··on E-ZPasses Get Read All Over New York (Not Just At Toll Booths)
In NYC at least, they do give red light tickets by camera/mail. I think it is like a parking ticket in that the responsibility is to the owner of the car. I assume it carries no points as well for that reason.
