mkl··on New Apple Silicon M4 and M5 HiDPI Limitation on 4K External Displays
27" 4k is totally fine on Windows 11 (not a gamer). Everything is sharp at 150% scale.
mkl··on AI overly affirms users asking for personal advice
I'm not layer8, but I had a similar thought. In this case the needless censoring is problematic because it hides the name of the benchmark from future searches (the uncensored URL spells it differently).
mkl··on Cocoa-Way – Native macOS Wayland compositor for running Linux apps seamlessly
You can easily install Plasma on Ubuntu.
mkl··on AI users whose lives were wrecked by delusion
Maybe it's because other people (IRL or at the AI provider) might see it? I have always had similar hesitations about search engines, and never come close to thinking of them (or chatbots) as beings.
mkl··on I tried to prove I'm not AI. My aunt wasn't convinced
Users paying to use the authenticated camera service means it would make money. That seems obvious, so I don't understand what the point of confusion is.
mkl··on Supreme Court Sides with Cox in Copyright Fight over Pirated Music
No royalties, as the 20-year-old song would be in the public domain, so no one can tell anyone they can't use the song. The vast majority of songs that make a profit will do so within the first few years, with almost or actually nothing after 10 years. The copyright system should optimise for public benefit and the vast majority of works, rather than the tiny number of big successes.
mkl··on I tried to prove I'm not AI. My aunt wasn't convinced
Instead of having it constantly running, you have to pay to turn it on for a couple of minutes.
mkl··on Arm AGI CPU
This is like naming your kid World President Smith.
mkl··on Microsoft's "fix" for Windows 11
I check out the status every so often. Not much is upstreamed yet, so it requires a patched kernel and some mucking about, likely on an ongoing basis. I'll probably try it at some point but not until I have moved my uses for that machine onto something else.
mkl··on Microsoft's "fix" for Windows 11
Unfortunately Linux doesn't run well on my Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (which is perfectly functional other than the lack of Windows security updates). I'm very unlikely to buy or recommend a Microsoft computer again, even though I liked the hardware.
mkl··on Microsoft's "Fix" for Windows 11: Flowers After the Beating
I don't think the fix is released yet, except for possibly Insider builds.
mkl··on Migrating to the EU
And don't pay for multiple years at once even if you're sure you'll be keeping the domain for a long time - at any moment the company could be bought by someone else you don't want to be trusting.
mkl··on Pompeii's battle scars linked to an ancient 'machine gun'
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polybolos

Apparently it was on MythBusters, but I don't remember that one.

mkl··on Migrating to the EU
Fastmail's servers are in the US: https://www.fastmail.help/hc/en-us/articles/1500000280221-Ho...
mkl··on Windows native app development is a mess
That survey was power users only: https://www.androidauthority.com/dark-mode-poll-results-1090...

I would be astounded if a majority of general Android users used dark mode, as light mode is the default on most phones (all, IME).

mkl··on I'm OK being left behind, thanks
From the first sentence of the article proper: "A study published in July 2025".
mkl··on ArXiv declares independence from Cornell
No need to ask - the whole point is open access. https://info.arxiv.org/help/bulk_data.html
mkl··on ArXiv declares independence from Cornell
It's been available all along: https://info.arxiv.org/help/bulk_data.html
mkl··on Unsloth Studio
From the README at https://github.com/unslothai/unsloth: "Unsloth uses a dual-licensing model of Apache 2.0 and AGPL-3.0. The core Unsloth package remains licensed under Apache 2.0, while certain optional components, such as the Unsloth Studio UI are licensed under AGPL-3.0."
mkl··on Python 3.15's JIT is now back on track
They are all JIT on different architectures, measured relative to CPython. https://doesjitgobrrr.com/about: blueberry is aarch64 Raspberry Pi, ripley is x86_64 Intel, jones is aarch64 M3 Pro, prometheus is x86_64 AMD.
mkl··on Python 3.15's JIT is now back on track
Yes, the graphs are incomprehensible because those are not defined in the article. They turn out to be different physical machines with different architectures: https://doesjitgobrrr.com/about

mkl··on Ryugu asteroid samples contain all DNA and RNA building blocks
From near the start of the article: "In 2014, the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa-2 blasted off on a 300-million-kilometer (185-million-mile) mission to land on Ryugu, a 900-meter-wide (2,950-feet-wide) asteroid. It successfully managed to collect two samples of rocks weighing 5.4 grams (under a fifth of an ounce) each and bring them back to Earth in 2020."
mkl··on Why Mathematica does not simplify sinh(arccosh(x))
Source available? The license is still proprietary, right?
mkl··on GIMP 3.2 released
This is not true with common applications people are familiar with. Excel and Word will happily "save" a PDF, and it behaves like exporting and doesn't change the document being edited.
mkl··on The Met releases high-def 3D scans of 140 famous art objects
You misread it. The things that are public domain are available under that. The other things which are (still) under copyright are available under different terms.
mkl··on Don't post generated/AI-edited comments. HN is for conversation between humans
I don't think the edited version is easier to read.
mkl··on Yann LeCun raises $1B to build AI that understands the physical world
Seems like it's the second largest seed round anywhere after Thinking Machines Labs? https://news.crunchbase.com/venture/biggest-seed-round-ai-th...

That article is from June 2025 so may be out of date, and the definition of "seed round" is a bit fuzzy.

mkl··on Show HN: The Mog Programming Language
> it's intended to minimize foot-guns to lower the error rate when generating Mog code. This is why Mog has no operator precedence: non-associative operations have to use parentheses, e.g. (a + b) * c.

Almost all the code LLMs have been trained on uses operator precedence, so no operator precedence seems like a massive foot-gun.

mkl··on We should revisit literate programming in the agent era
This seems to be the best link? https://solve.it.com/

The name is quite hard to search for, as it's used by a lot of different things.

Jeremy it's pretty hard to understand what this is from the descriptions, and the two videos are each ~1 hour long. Please consider showing screenshots and one or two short videos.
