mkhattab··on Django Best Practices
> I can't speak for Chef/Puppet but I tried in the past to incorporate Fabric into my workflow but I couldn't find a fabfile that worked out of the box [...]

You should think of a fabfile as a glorified shell script (or Makefile). So, instead of writing your own shell script that uploads your assets to your remote box, restarts Apache, etc. and then adjusting your script to run on multiple boxes, you can just write a simple Fabric task or two that does the same thing (with minimal configuration). Chef/Puppet are completely different tools than Fabric. In fact, the two are complementary[1].

I totally recommend Fabric to beginners because it builds on what you should know, i.e. how to write simple shell scripts, and it makes life easier.

mkhattab··on Pandora CEO stepping down
Did anyone else get an email saying you're one of the 4% of users that exceed 40 hour monthly usage? Can't believe it's only 4%.

(listening to Pandora now).

mkhattab··on Rand Paul filibustering over drones
One of the problems I see with this is that a Republican is leading the charge on this rather than a Democrat. And because Rand Paul says a lot of stupid things, as do most Republicans, I think many people will dismiss this as partisan politics (which it probably is).

I think we need another president as bad or worse as Bush again (perhaps Romney or Palin) to put enough pressure on citizens to become actively engaged again and take to the streets.

mkhattab··on Introducing Roku 3
I like the Boxee Box remote, which has a QWERTY keyboard on one side of the remote, which is a better solution than having an on-screen keyboard.
mkhattab··on Introducing Roku 3
Actually the remote uses Wifi-Direct. I wonder if this device supports Android wireless display, which would be cool.

Speaking of feeling old, I can barely see the light gray text at the footer and in some of the sub-headings.
mkhattab··on Django 1.5 released
Unit testing Django applications has been a source of pain for me. Writing functional or acceptances is ok using Django test client, although many recommend using WebTest, which is nice but slow if you're going to write hundreds of them.

Interesting that you quoted an outspoken racist and anti-semite. I'm guessing you believe in a "clash of civilizations" existential conflict between Muslims and Westerners, right?
mkhattab··on Egyptian court bans YouTube for a month
I think his main point is that while this country has risen above racial denigration and there are consequences to racial hate speech, there aren't any to religious hate speech. Also, free speech is restricted if it is directed to lead to "imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action" (Brandenburg v. Ohio)[1].

I like Hamza Yusuf's take on this matter [1], regarding free speech in the Arab world and in general. I think this is a stupid move on the part of the government. It's making them look like clowns and easily manipulated simpletons.

mkhattab··on How to Learn JavaScript Properly
This book has interactive code examples and is endorsed by Brendan Eich which is cool, I guess.

> Cleaning the data - This takes time and it can be annoying.

Have you tried using Google Refine[1]? It's an excellent tool for cleaning datasets and a useful addition to your workflow. I was miffed I didn't know about it when I had to collect and analyze data from surveys awhile ago. I was using Python for cleanup (Google Refine supports Jython).

Google Refine (now Open Refine) [1] is something that is also useful for data analysis and munging.

mkhattab··on DOS is long dead, long live FreeDOS
> Oh man, this tugs on all sorts of sentimental DOS strings. Especially that first phrase about people under 30 not knowing what DOS is.

I'm under 30 (28) and I still remember DOS and breaking (running arbitrary commands on) my Dad's work laptop, that he never used. The single greatest benefit of FreeDOS is letting me play my old games, specifically "Are You Afraid of the Dark? The Tale of Orpheo's Curse."[1] This is, still, one of the most entertaining games I've played. I replay the game every year or two as a personal tradition. Some day I'll force my kids to play it.

mkhattab··on AT&T Will Force Your Data Plan For Your Unlocked Out-of-Contract "Smart" Phone
They do sell SIM cards, I was at a T-Mobile store yesterday. I don't understand the rationale for selling SIM cards in-store at 20 times the cost of buying online.
mkhattab··on Creator Of The X-Plane Flight Simulator Seeks Help Fighting A Patent Troll
It's interesting to note that the number of patent cases in East Texas quadrupled from 2003 to 2004, from 14 to 59 cases, then increased again to 236 in 2006 [1]. Is there an economic benefit for the citizens in that district?

mkhattab··on AT&T Will Force Your Data Plan For Your Unlocked Out-of-Contract "Smart" Phone
Yes, however you can order the (micro, if applicable) SIM activation kit online for $0.99 and free shipping. If you can't wait then your only option is picking up a SIM card kit from a T-Mobile store for $20.
mkhattab··on A few thoughts about Open Source Software
I think this is unrealistic considering technical debt involved in any codebase. There is an example of what you described, specifically a company that rebranded Blender, renamed it to 3DMagix. I guess the companies you're describing are mostly out to make a quick buck and they'll do it regardless of licensing.
mkhattab··on A few thoughts about Open Source Software
If those libraries were abandoned by the community then the significance of taking the library closed by some company that needs to maintain its legacy codebase is probably minimal or irrelevant.
mkhattab··on A few thoughts about Open Source Software
I like ESR's opinion on reciprocal licensing like the GPL and that is the market punishes those companies that take the source closed. In-house forks are probably hacks that contain specific business logic or minor enhancements. ESR best explains it in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEPg2M1qbEs
mkhattab··on If You Call Out Bad Code, Make Sure It's Bad First
I agree, the responses are much worse that was originally said. There's also the expectation that you'll suck it up and deal with it which betrays the purpose for reacting against what you said in the first place.

Oh, you missed the tweet, in the screenshot, where he wishes you get cancer and that he calls you a cunt :)

mkhattab··on Github update - no more private keys
Well, this is a good response time from Github I guess. Unfortunately, I wanted to show my friend how ridiculous some people track their private keys in their repos and didn't make it in time :( On a positive note, Google still indexes these repos :)
mkhattab··on [dead]
No, some of these repositories are user's dotfiles. See this for example, https://github.com/gomachan/dotfiles

There are many examples like this.

mkhattab··on [dead]
It's probably more like:

   $ git add .
   $ git commit
mkhattab··on [dead]
This is a big WTF moment for me. There are a ton of private keys here. I don't even know what else to say.
mkhattab··on Being Wrong on the Internet
Here's Linus' opinion on Github pull requests https://github.com/torvalds/linux/pull/17#issuecomment-56546...

I wonder how critical the HN community would have been if the exchange was with a female programmer? If you read the exchange, you'll see other commenters defending Linus' blunt responses. Linus was harsher than David or Steve, he called the pull requester a moron.

> Watch the gossip magazines trash actors' clothes and haircut

And also reading some of the more interesting messages on the Linux Kernel mailing lists, specifically messages by Linus. It's sometimes entertaining to read them and the responses in defense of Linus because he's awesome. I wonder what the reactions from HN would be if it was Linus, or some really high profile programmer, making these comments?

mkhattab··on What It's Like To Be Ridiculed For Open Sourcing A Project
Perhaps you are correct. While I completely agree that what happened to her was completely uncalled for regardless of her gender. I find that sometimes myself I am slightly harsher in criticism of my male colleagues and friends. Perhaps dcramer and steveklabnik didn't realize they were addressing the project of a female programmer? Nonetheless, their rudeness is still wrong especially in the public sphere.
mkhattab··on Almost Flat Design
Indeed, I looked at the image before fully reading the comment and thought it was an older version of Outlook.
mkhattab··on Online Dating for Scientists
Do you mean that most people are highly selective about the race of their potential mate? If this is the case, I don't think that this is racist. Besides, scientists are humans too, I doubt there would be much of a difference.
