mjsweet··on Workspaces for Mac 1.0
As a freelancer working on multiple projects at one time I find task switching between different projects to be time consuming and often quite frustrating.

The cognitive load needed to task shift takes time and may take up to 20 minutes to get my head into the task, not to mention setting up my session for the client project. Then when I need to shift back to another project I have to start over. Most of my time is spent digging through finder and opening files.

This app, even in it's early stages will save me a lot of money... the AUD$10 is worth it - you could charge more. I have tinkered with spaces in the past to do this as well as thought about (hellish thought) using multiple user account and fast switch between them... nothing has worked quite right.

I think this would be particularly useful for digital agencies. Allowing fast switching between projects. It would be particularly useful if there was workspaces or "projects" were shareable with teams in those environments too. Easily pickup where another team member left off... an enterprise option maybe?

Saving window state is useful, but I find using SizeUp to move things around after it has loaded is probably enough. Also, I tend to move between my eternal monitor and laptop screen only quite regularly, so I'm not sure how window management would work in those scenarios.

The big thing though is to be able to close a workspace... I can see in comments you are working on this for a later release. It's not the end of the world right now - closing everything I don't need open is easy and doesn't require a whole lot of thought.

For now you have nailed the biggest use case for my daily workflow after window management with SizeUp... opening a folder of resources with the click of a button!

Bravo!

mjsweet··on How Apple could have avoided much of the controversy
Here is an interesting statement from the article that rings true for me:

"A lot of it boils down to this concept: We demand Apple innovate, but we insist they don’t change anything."

Did anyone buy one if these? If so, would love to hear your thoughts.

Isn't this post about SSD performance on the iPhone 7, whereas this page is about cellular performance of the respective broadcomm and intel chipsets?
mjsweet··on Show HN: Go-odbye – Twitter Follow/Unfollow Reporting Tool Written in Go
I honestly thought this would be the sorry of a developer frustrated with Go's lack of package manager and its pragmatism... wrong!

That said, I would like to be the first to say the following; is it really that necessary to not only include "Go" in the title of the post (as if it were a feature) but also in the name of the application? There, I said it ;) /s

mjsweet··on Start multi-tasking with your virtual reality headset
Can anyone who has used this comment on it's general usability?

For instance, if I lean in closer to a space will it get closer, or is my head position locked?

Would this be useful for coding? e.g. is text clear enough?

What kind of resolution is needed for text to approach the level of retina displays that we have become accustomed to?

Does anyone have any thoughts on developer experience... toolchain and IDE opportunities that would take great advantage of GetSpace?

mjsweet··on Blackbird: an adjustable car rig that creates photoreal CG cars
This is an amazing fusion of robotics, AR, compositing and 3D tools... I wonder if any team on the project could elaborate on the technologies used and what it took to go from zero to 60 in 2 years? That seems like a punishing development schedule for an idea like this.

I would love to be able to install a service like this with AWS Lamba and API gateway with a React of AngularJS front-end. If anyone has thoughts on how ElasticSearch could work with Lambda?
mjsweet··on Hugo – Golang static site editor
Oh wow, I just looked up their doco, and found the csv and rest connectors. Thank you so much for this. Had I known I may not have built a recent parts database website with harp.js and a weird mashup of php, bash and even a go sitemap script. Dumping out csv files from excel, iterate through said csv files with php and dump ejs files with part (628 in all) then harp compile followed by an s3 sync for all 633 pages on the site. All scripts referenced from one bash file. I felt clever! But won't feel clever when I rebuild my Mac with X number of environments (npm, php, aws sdk, OSG) to build the site. With Hugo and also stout [1] also mentioned here, the workflow is alot more predictable, and binaries could be kept in the project for easy portability.

Also worth mentioning is OSG [2], a sitemap generator written in go that I use in my bash script. It's very fast. This may have some advantages over hugos built in sitemap generator depending on your site, though I think I would use hugos in most cases. Might be useful for others using other static generators that don't support sitemaps and also have other CMS's and carts / forums installed too.

mjsweet··on All Websites Look the Same
I think it's important to not mess with the customers mental model. In particular the shopping cart pattern was created over a period of time to make the eCommerce user experience as frictionless as possible. So when someone wants to get through the cart, you would want as few surprises for the customer as possible. The hamburger icon is a great example of how a UX pattern has taken a long time to filter down into the the collective mindset of users... "oh.. this is the menu". I still get clients asking when the funny stack of lines are and end up adding "Menu" right next to the icon. So my question is this: is it safe to try new things, or is it better to stick with existing patterns we know work? Or is there a blend of both? Is it better to let larger operations (Facebook, Google, Apple etc) to forge the way with mass assimilation of UX patterns? I do think my first instinct is right (first sentence), but I would love to know the experiences of other UX people about integrating new and fresh UX patterns.

I'm not sure if this is an April fools joke or not... as Matt posted it on March 31. My locale however is Australia which makes it April 1. So am I right to assume that Matt (as the fine global citizen that he is) launched his April fools joke early for our benefit in this part of the globe? ;)
mjsweet··on Hugo Static Website Engine v0.13
What I like about this release is the GetJSON and GetCSV functionality. At the moment with Harp I use a php script to output CSV files into the correct harp json format and then build the site. Great for big databases of parts or products. It also looks like Hugo may generate faster than Harp (which os node based) quite useful in my case where sites of several thousand static pages will generate faster.
mjsweet··on How to Build a Static CMS with Roots, Contentful, and Netlify
Maybe Cockpit CMS could be used? Self hosted CaaS style CMS and seems to have a REST interface. I wonder if it could be used with static generators? http://getcockpit.com/. I Have been thinking about this for a while and would love to see it work with metalsmith.io, Assemble.io or maybe even my favourite harp.js.
mjsweet··on Puer – more than a live-reload server, built for efficient front end development
Thank you for posting this, after 20 minutes of trying to get Puer going I gave Browser Sync a go. Easier to install and the proxy setup worked first time. Also the documentation seems to be well laid out on Browser Syncs site with clear instructions and Gulp / Grunt examples... might give gulp a try soon.

So according to https://www.sven.de/dpi/ it will be 217.57 PPI.. similar to the Mac Book Pro retina 15 which is 220 PPI. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retina_Display for the list.
