I’m Martin Brennan, and I’m a full-stack staff software engineer working at Discourse.

I'm primarily a rubyist, but I enjoy JavaScript too, and I work with Rails and SPAs all day.

I have a technical blog at https://www.martin-brennan.com and a digital garden for my fiction writing at https://writing.martin-brennan.com. You can contact me at mjrbrennan@gmail.com

Outside of software engineering, my other loves include writing, reading, music, film photography, Warhammer, my lovely wife, our two sons, and our huge menagerie of pets.

mjrbrennan··on Ask HN: What books have you not finished?
Same, also The Fountainhead, and that quote is always on my mind when choosing books. Thankfully most of the time I don't have to enforce it.
mjrbrennan··on Five Minute Journal – Daily Journal Techniques and Tips
This is really cool! I much prefer writing in longhand (I do for all my fiction writing). However my handwriting is absolutely awful. Maybe I need to try this out and see how it fares -- all the examples on the front page have nice neat handwriting :)
mjrbrennan··on Too much of a good thing: Mourning the slow death of the retail game store
This is how you end up with Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge.
mjrbrennan··on How I Write Code: Pen and Paper
I have to agree with your other comment. Drawing things out on pen and paper helps me a lot as well, but it’s quite difficult to do when you need to work around existing code and keep all the classes, methods, and logic in your head, looking up things as you go.
mjrbrennan··on Ask HN: Do You Use a Debugger?
Yes all the time, debugger for JavaScript and binding.pry for ruby. I don’t understand how people can rely purely on print debugging. I find it much more useful to stop and inspect the state and input, and being able to print a backtrace from that point is also valuable.
mjrbrennan··on iOS 15 Humane
I am not sure if this is entirely what you mean, but for a game Red Dead Redemption 2 can scratch this itch. The natural environment, ecosystem, and weather effects are amazing. You can easily just avoid the main game and just wander around the environment, and there are a lot of woods to walk in!
mjrbrennan··on Ask HN: How did you find your current job?
F: Saw a job posting from one of the founders on Twitter. Almost didn’t apply but then I did and it all worked out, best job decision I’ve ever made!
mjrbrennan··on What if remote work didn’t mean working from home?
Yeah I think about going to coworking spaces now and then (I am full remote since October 2019) and then I remember that all of them play music over the speakers and how awful that is for concentration, not to mention the loud conversations and phone calls.
mjrbrennan··on Apple Music Announces Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio
I hate this stupid distinction so much as well. The idea that you have to follow artists instead of seeing the artists based on your liked songs or albums is so dumb.
mjrbrennan··on Why do we buy into the 'cult' of overwork?
I think in American Psycho Bateman and his friends are already super rich before even going into work, having been born into wealth as "trust fund kids". I am pretty sure, unless I remember incorrectly, that Pearce & Pearce, the firm they all work for, is part-owned by Bateman's father, or he at least had the connections to get him the job there? They all have a Vice President title too, so it seems like in that instance they are all just given cushy jobs with nepotism.
mjrbrennan··on How to survive a toxic workplace and how to avoid creating one
I guess inkjet printers are good for something after all!

Was there any reason...why he did that?

mjrbrennan··on Best practices for remote software engineering
That was a great read, thanks for linking!
mjrbrennan··on The unreasonable effectiveness of print debugging
I don't get the usefulness/effectiveness print debugging. I work in Ruby and JavaScript and I find it much more efficient to know the whole state of the world and the objects in it at a certain place, because I generally know where the problem may be. For example I use pry in ruby and the debugger; statement in JS.

Maybe it is just the way my brain works? I'd rather stop and see what I need behind a condition than have to filter through a lot of possibly unformatted console output.

mjrbrennan··on Don't End the Week with Nothing (2014)
> just engaging in work theater

I do not have firsthand experience at this, but from my understanding being a salaryman in Japan means staying in the office until the boss leaves. It does not matter if you are producing value or not in that time, it is more about appearance and company loyalty.

I agree with you 100%...I think the most I've ever worked in a week was probably in the 50-60 hour range and that was one of the worst experiences of my life. I cannot fathom doing 90 hours for SEVERAL YEARS without wanting to drive into oncoming traffic.

mjrbrennan··on Ask HN: Do you read articles on HN before reading/writing comments?
Most of the time I read the comments first because there is a good discussion and this is a nice indicator of whether the article is worth reading or not.
mjrbrennan··on NES.css – NES-Style CSS Framework
I was really weirded out by this too, almost felt like the cursor was snapping!
mjrbrennan··on Ask HN: How many hours per day do you work?
This is super workplace dependent. Some places just want you to churn stuff out quickly and are unforgiving of research and time spent thinking things through. Other places value everyone taking their time, learning, and finding the right solution, even if it takes longer, rather than the solution that works right this second.

> Does anyone really need to be warned that they are using the passive voice? Does anyone actually do that by accident?

Yes, all the time. I write a lot and still fall into the trap, and it is hard not to do it sometimes especially if you were only introduced to the concept later in life. I try hard not to use the passive voice, but there are times when I think it is acceptable, and there are occasions where the alternative is more confusing. The quoted speech "Now we are engaged in a great civil war..." sounds perfectly fine to me!

Honestly, I have trouble thinking of an alternative sometimes, even when I can identify a passive voice sentence.

mjrbrennan··on Pimp My Microwave
This is the one we have at home https://www.breville.com/au/en/products/tea/bke720.html, works great!
mjrbrennan··on Pimp My Microwave
Fair enough! Looks like there is a big difference in electricity between US and UK as well? I am in Australia and we use our kettle (with several different preset temperatures) all the time.
mjrbrennan··on Pimp My Microwave
Just curious...why use a microwave for hot water instead of an electric kettle?
mjrbrennan··on iOS 14 USB tethering broken on Linux: looking for docs and contact at Apple
Personally the wifi version of wireless hotspot was always finicky for me on Linux, requiring a few restarts of the hotspot and the computer wifi to get synced up.

Wired tethering always worked instantly. Well, until now sadly :(. I tried to do this the other day and I just figured something was bugged, but I didn’t realise it is an iOS14 issue. Guess I am stuck with the wifi hotspot for now when I am out and about.

mjrbrennan··on Attention is your scarcest resource
It’s actually quite nice, I only remembered I posted this comment just now and I came back and saw it had some upvotes and extra comments which was a nice surprise.
mjrbrennan··on Attention is your scarcest resource
That automatic email issue is an interesting one, I will take a look and see if there are similar complaints or internal discussions. I know we have some ideas about letting users choose which categories they are tracking on signup instead of auto opt in, emails would be another great thing to do this with (I have turned off email notifications for the Discourse forums I am a member of FWIW.). Thanks for the extra comments!
mjrbrennan··on Why do so many people want us back in the office?
I find the idea of blaring a TV or music in an office is so disrespectful. The people who need quiet to work _really_ need it...if you need noise put some headphones on to listen to music or a show. It shouldn’t be the other way around, it is much harder to block out the noise with headphones. Coworking spaces are terrible for this.
mjrbrennan··on Attention is your scarcest resource
I work at Discourse; there is new functionality coming in the 2.6 release to address this issue, see https://meta.discourse.org/t/let-experienced-users-skip-new-.... When you join a new community you will be able to click an option that skips all of the Discobot tutorial and the new user badge notifications (which are the basic ones like First Like).
mjrbrennan··on Persisting as a solo founder
Found this true of everything, and yet I continue to procrastinate. For example I write fiction. The absolute hardest part is just starting to write. Once I start I have no problem whatsoever to keep going.
mjrbrennan··on Hiring Without Whiteboards
I'd much rather do a take-home project at my own pace funded by the company, seeing as how my personal GitHub is a barren wasteland (well...it was before I started working for an OSS company).
mjrbrennan··on Tired of note-taking apps
I write fiction, and I write everything in longhand for this exact reason. It can be difficult start some days but once I do it’s easier to get into that “edge of sleep” state you describe, where the creative juices start flowing more freely. My handwriting is awful, but being able to quickly scribble out ideas and add margin notes is very useful. Writing longhand allows much better harmony between my brain and the page. There are no distractions on paper either!

One downside is that I have to then type all my writing up, but I use this time as an opportunity to do a first editing pass.

mjrbrennan··on 'Doomscrolling' breeds anxiety – how to stop the cycle
I never thought I’d hear someone call Blood Meridian a “spaghetti western adventure”. Makes it sound like The Magnificent Seven!
