And a lot of patience was needed for browsing the web back then.
mjhagen··on Pooling and Sharing of wealth makes everyone's wealth grow faster
> it doesn't seem to be working long term

Define "Long term", it's been working pretty well for over a century.

mjhagen··on New images and video confirm Austin-made Tesla model Y has cracked front casting
Meanwhile, TSLA is up 2% pre market.
mjhagen··on micro – A Modern Alternative to nano
I'm holding out for Macro.
mjhagen··on Amazon shuts down customer’s smart home
I like some things reasonably smart (boiler, ventilation), devices that learn from the occupant’s behaviour in order to be more economical with energy for instance. I'm not a fan of other "smart" tech, like lights, stoves, ovens, fridges, etc.

300 buys you a fantastic second hand bike with all standard parts that any shop can repair or replace.
mjhagen··on VanMoof encryption key exporter
There are kids in Amsterdam getting children's e-bikes for a 5 minute ride to school. I'm still not seeing this as good development, at least not in most places in the Netherlands.

> This is not expensive at all.

> If they can’t find it you get a new one.

Can't figure out why they weren't profitable.

mjhagen··on Threads, an Instagram app
One that they actively discouraged users to use and reset every once in a while.
mjhagen··on Threads, an Instagram app
The pure chronologic feed is why I used Tweetbot and is why I'm on Mastodon.
mjhagen··on Threads, an Instagram app
The twitter I used was way more text than media, I had Tweetbot set to small thumbnails as well. For me at least, Twitter started as text only and ended as text mostly.
mjhagen··on Designing the First Apple Macintosh: The Engineers’ Story (1984)
> The gui on the mac was another program like a game running on top of the OS.

I presume you speak metaphorically, but just in case. Macintosh wasn't like that, the GUI was the OS, which is what made it so different from Microsoft's attempts, no DOS to drop down to.

mjhagen··on Sub.Rehab – See where Reddit communities have relocated
Same, but I'm in the same circles :)
mjhagen··on Sub.Rehab – See where Reddit communities have relocated
It's at least part of a community that's moving.
mjhagen··on Reddit CEO Steve Huffman: It's time we grow up and behave like an adult company
That's nice for people (like you, apparently) who don't have a problem with the direction reddit chose with their website and app, but for those who enjoyed old.reddit and Apollo it's too bad.

This whole situation reminds me of a policy that happens around my city where they turn industrial areas into residential ones by renting out the old factory buildings for cheap to artists and once the neighbourhood is made popular (by these artists) rent goes up enormously (pricing out the artists) and yuppies move in.

Reddit is now kicking out the people that made it.

mjhagen··on I am Steve Huffman, the new CEO of Reddit. AMA. (2015)
Aren’t power users the ones who make Reddit? They submit and moderate most content.
mjhagen··on Reddit.com appears to be having an outage
This hurts.
mjhagen··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
I'm extremely lazy, the commute "forced" me to do some exercise and I promptly stopped when the WFH lock downs started.
mjhagen··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
I'm the exact opposite, I love having a 5k bike ride as my commute. It helps clear my head and it keeps me healthy. During COVID I even rented my own office away from my home just to have an excuse for a daily ride.
mjhagen··on Who wants to be tracked?
“But, not as much as our bottom line.”
mjhagen··on Sweet Home 3D is a free interior design application
Couldn't ML be utilised to recognise furniture and remove it from the model?
mjhagen··on Linode rebranded as Akamai’s cloud computing services
I learned the name "Akamai" when I saw it in the URL for the ~~first~~ second trailer for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace in 1998.

edit: it was actually the second trailer in '99

mjhagen··on Douglas Adams on Hypercard and new educational models
Funny thing is that exactly that last bit is how it lured me into CS. A bit of friction is an excellent motivator.
mjhagen··on Omg.lol – A lovable web page and email address
Slow loading times, 8 GB images, animated gifs, crazy dull pages, pages optimized for mobile, for a special browser,... no thank you, i stay on the old web ;-)
mjhagen··on Recursive Game of Life
My God, it's full of pixels!
mjhagen··on Bye, Twitter
It’s actively trying not to have all the associated faults. For instance, there is no company behind it that needs to make money, so no ads, no algorithmic timeline.
