mjfl··on Antidepressant use is surging in Britain
Do you have any peer reviewed studies that contradict my common sense and intuition?
mjfl··on Nightshade: An offensive tool for artists against AI art generators
Another way would be, for every 1 piece of art you make, post 10 AI generated arts, so that the SNR is really bad.
mjfl··on New cancer drug kinder than chemotherapy
Any chemotherapy that damages the immune system should be avoided.
mjfl··on ‘This Has Been Going on for Years’: Boeing’s Manufacturing Mess
Seems like a really good case study in how complex engineering technologies become unknowable overtime and this leads to a collapse as understanding of the core product declines.
mjfl··on The flight of the Weird Nerd from academia
Or a tumor :)
mjfl··on The flight of the Weird Nerd from academia
> Once you make it to professor, you need to use the connections and the prestige to get the big grants to hire lots of PhDs and postdocs yourself to continue the cycle.

It is certainly strange that the final goal of academia is basically to create an org. Totally different from the image of the idealized scientist to me. But this does allow a lot of people to work in science. It probably allowed me to get my foot in the door when I wouldn't have otherwise.

mjfl··on Genetic variants for male bisexuality, risk-taking linked to more children
it's data mining.
mjfl··on Genetic variants for male bisexuality, risk-taking linked to more children
data mining. So much scientific pollution these days.
mjfl··on Most states start school too early in the morning
I was overscheduled in high school and constantly sleep deprived from doing too much. However, shifting the school day forward 1 hour or 2 would not have helped me since it would have just shifted my whole day forward 1-2 hours, as I was completely 'booked' with sports/homework. I think another problem is that a lot of people plan for a certain amount of sleep, but then stay up late due to devices, which is a new, modern problem that I think is actually very severe given the addictiveness of apps. Judging other commenters here, I am pessimistic about people's ability to self-delude themselves into thinking they or their kids don't have a screen problem, and just need the schedule to be shifted forward.
mjfl··on Most states start school too early in the morning
and on the other side of this, adding an hour or two will not solve the problem if kids then stay up an additional hour or two on their apps, which will certainly happen. People are being incredibly dishonest with themselves on this issue.
mjfl··on Bayesians moving from defense to offense
I fail to understand why the terminology matters. If you need to make a decision then there will be a threshold in the probability that will determine it. It doesn’t matter if you call it p values or anything else.
mjfl··on Bayesians moving from defense to offense
> If your hypothesis is that A is greater than B, then you're test boils down to "The probability that A is greater than B", which is arrived at through parameter estimation via Bayes' Theorem.

but even in this situation you would need a threshold for decision making, i.e. a p-value.

mjfl··on Bayesians moving from defense to offense
What is a “prior” in the context of hypothesis testing? That seems to me to be a concept used in parameter estimation, with Bayes rule. But hypothesis testing is not parameter estimation.
mjfl··on Bayesians moving from defense to offense
But I don't see p-values as connected to frequentist statistics. Rather, p-values are a concept that applies to the problem of hypothesis testing, which both frequentist and bayesian statistics should apply to, right? And in both cases you would use a p-value. The unique thing that Bayesian statistics can do is fit parameters can calculate uncertainty in those parameters, which does not contradict any of the concepts of hypothesis testing.
mjfl··on Bayesians moving from defense to offense
I've never heard anyone promote frequentist statistics. I've only ever heard Bayesians on the 'offense' talking about why their framework is better. To be clear I am someone who doesn't really understand the faultlines.
mjfl··on Researchers uncover on/off switch for breast cancer metastasis in mice
"In mice" is really hard to achieve.
mjfl··on Sam Altman invested in age-reversal startup with "imminent" results
The already harvest their organs, including skin.

https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2009/dec/21/israeli-pathol...

It’s not such a far leap to include blood as well. Any resemblance to old stereotypes is an unfortunate consequence of the Israelis own actions.

To reiterate my comment since it was flagged, made invisible, and then quoted out of context: "This area of research will yield a lot of nightmares - young billionaires unintentionally giving themselves cancer in an attempt to preempt aging, old Israelis using young Palestinians as blood bags, lots of mice being killed for nothing..."

mjfl··on Bacteria store memories and pass them on for generations
but epigenetics usually stores information over much shorter timescales than generations. For example, cellular identity is stored epigenetically - whether a cell is a neuron or a white blood cell.
mjfl··on Antidepressants or Tolkien
Now I'm thinking of an elf named Sildenafil.
mjfl··on Shadows Edge Software
In real life the sophisticated cyber warfare consists of making posts on Reddit and other forums.
mjfl··on Embracing community helps us live longer, and be happier (2017)
Happiness is a false idol. The key to happiness is to lower your standards for what you expect out of life. This leads to an uncreative state of being - because why would you create anything, the world is good as it is. And creating is just too hard. But this uncreative "last man" is someone that I certainly would not hold in esteem. Give me a tortured artist instead.
mjfl··on Shadow: New browser engine made almost entirely in JavaScript
Why do people love JavaScript and want everything written in it?
mjfl··on Why programming languages matter [video]
Very little innovation in programming languages has happened regarding new realities at the hardware level especially transition from serial to parallel execution.
mjfl··on Atrocity propaganda
> It is currently setting up roadblocks in Gaza to prevent civilians from moving south away from the targeted areas.

You mean that they're preventing civilians from going to an area Israel is bombing anyways?

mjfl··on Atrocity propaganda
I think people are accusing Israel of atrocity propaganda. You may be misunderstanding the submitter.
mjfl··on Solvable statistical physics models for large neuronal populations
with laundauers phenomenon, the heat (and entroy) is exported to the environment, and is not retained in the computer.
mjfl··on Solvable statistical physics models for large neuronal populations
Landauer's principle says that heat is sent into the environment in response erasing bits. entropy is increased in the environment, not the computer.
mjfl··on Solvable statistical physics models for large neuronal populations
Unfortunately these statistical physics models help about as much as statistical physics models would help in deciphering the x86 instruction set architecture from the activity of the microchip - very little. Too much averaging. Computation is entropy 0 phenomena.
mjfl··on Balfour Declaration
Britain, you just lion, great job.
mjfl··on Scientists identify pathway activated by interferon-gamma leading to tumor death
iirc interferon gamma is a cool sounding name but what it does is more esoteric than say interferon alpha or beta, which more directly activate immune response at the site of release.
