mjfl··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
The problem with the logic, that a geopolitical adversary shouldn't control a social media company, is that our domestic political system has, as of late, acted quite adversarial to its own population. For that reason, it's not clear to me if China is really a foreign enemy, or an enemy of an enemy. For now, I and many of the younger generation clearly consider it to be the latter, and I will resist all efforts of the current regime to suppress it, until all members of the current regime are swept from power.

mjfl··on German state ditches Microsoft for Linux and LibreOffice
For me Linux is so much better a user experience due to the lack of bloat in the operating system. Microsoft seems to be getting more and more intrusive with its data collection, in addition. Furthermore, being a foreign government that has been subject to US espionage in the past, I'm sure it's better for Germany to use an open source OS rather than US-state back software system.
mjfl··on Eternal September
The second thing I noticed was the comments and posts per day cratering recently. Is that real?
mjfl··on The wealth of the 1% just hit a record $44T
I am just comparing the potential revenue from taxation to the overall size of government spending via the deficit. I don't really understand what you are saying with this comment. Do you think government spending can be unbounded? Why tax at all?
mjfl··on The wealth of the 1% just hit a record $44T
if you taxed Elon Musk, Warren Buffet, and Bill Gates at 100% including all their wealth, assets, you would barely reduce the US deficit in one year. You would also be shit out of luck in the next year. I'm sick of the thought process which essentially says we would be in a mode of 'post-scarcity' if we simply ate the rich.
mjfl··on After Appalachian hospitals merged, their ERs became much slower
Hospital costs are rising which is putting them out of business, which causes mergers and takeovers by organizations that specialize in extracting profit out of hospital services. These organizations do this by reducing costs by lowering nursing staff numbers to like 20% of what they were before, which pretty directly leads to lower quality service. The cost increases in the medical industry are quickly making the whole system nearly untenable. We could see a system collapse in the near future. One way of mitigating this is providing the same services outside of a hospital- for example the cardiologists leaving the hospital and starting a private practice. This leads to reduced overhead and maintains tenability of the whole system.
mjfl··on Twilight of the Steam Age, Part 1: Internal Combustion
When I joined the physics major at college, I didn't really know what was taught in the physics field. I was disappointed when it wasn't about internal combustion engines and nuclear reactors.
mjfl··on Actual Uses for Near-Term Quantum Computers
understanding quantum phenomena associated with developing a quantum computer is in itself cool enough to justify investment into it, at least at the academic level. People have been making these really cool electronic devices, making 'magic' atoms with protected quantum states. Quantum computing, even if a working device never gets constructed, is like a bottomless well of interesting quantum curiosities.

mjfl··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
dark energy increases the distance between objects, adding to the system's energy by increasing the gravitational potential energy. Without the contribution from dark energy, after several cycles the pull from the iron atoms would cause the black hole orbit to decay.
mjfl··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
two black holes in highly elliptical orbit, so they they nearly collide when they come together. at the center of mass is a cloud of iron atoms. When the black holes nearly collide tidal forces across iron nuclei rip them apart. These ripped apart atoms can then be re-harvested and used as fuel in a fusion engine. The energy loss from ripping the atoms apart is then recovered by the black holes by taking advantage of dark energy when they go apart, which increases the distance between them, increasing the gravitational potential energy.
mjfl··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
it is, in the negative direction though. So increasing the distance increases the potential energy by making -1/r closer to zero.
mjfl··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
The extra energy comes from the increase in gravitational potential energy between objects. The accelerating increase in this potential energy implies the total energy of the universe is increasing. I’m not talking about harvesting dark energy directly.
mjfl··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
It is very fortunate that the universe is expanding. This provides a virtually unlimited source of energy.

mjfl··on Neanderthals, modern humans may have co-existed in Europe for at least 10k years
It probably went both ways to some extent. But the Neanderthal population was much smaller, and probably martially weaker, as they were clearly playing a losing evolutionary strategy.
mjfl··on Neanderthals, modern humans may have co-existed in Europe for at least 10k years
It doesn't follow that if human males stole Neanderthal wives sometime in the past, that you would necessarily see Neanderthal mitochondrial DNA in present populations.

Consider a serial 'wife-stealing' human culture. One generation of human males leaps upon a small population of Neanderthals, killing the men and stealing the women. The next generation, a new group of half-neanderthal males leaves the colony in search of wives, finds a human group, kills the men, and steals the women. The children of this generation will be 1/4 Neanderthal with no Neanderthal mitochondrial DNA. Imagine that the first colony gets wiped out, as most ancient communities were. There you go.

mjfl··on Neanderthals, modern humans may have co-existed in Europe for at least 10k years
which implies that there are humans alive that are genetically as far apart from each other as the average human was from the average neanderthal (i.e. statistically there probably exists humans who's separation from each other is twice the average distance).
mjfl··on Neanderthals, modern humans may have co-existed in Europe for at least 10k years
they weren't necessarily killed off, rather blended into the human population through conquest and wife-stealing and the resulting interbreeding.
mjfl··on Neanderthals, modern humans may have co-existed in Europe for at least 10k years
another interesting fact is that modern Europeans are descended from 4 distinct populations which were as genetically distant from each other as modern Europeans are from Asians: Western hunter gatherers, anatolian farmers, eastern hunter gatherers, and eurasian steppe herders. David Reich goes into it in his book 'Who we are and why we got here'.
mjfl··on Everyone hates the electronic medical record
Idk this reads like apologetics for the software industry, which I know people will be more sympathetic to here. But. I know doctors that tell me their EMR log them out after a minute of inactivity and take 3 minutes to login. This can happen multiple times during a patient visit and are totally disruptive. I've heard that it's even begun to affect the throughput of the hospital. So I wouldn't be so dismissive of doctors complaints.
