mjcohen··on Built-in workaround for applications hiding under the MacBook Pro notch
I got the original 13" M1 MPB and put some additional "buttons" on the touch bar. Sort of miss it on my 16" M1 MBP.
mjcohen··on AMD funded a drop-in CUDA implementation built on ROCm: It's now open-source
Can't Use Devices (by) AMD
mjcohen··on Show HN: Multi-monitor KVM using just a USB switch
I use an app called MonitorControl on a M1 16" MBP running Sonoma that adjusts both the MBP screen and external HP 25f monitor. It adjusts the brightness and contrast of whichever screen the cursor is in.
mjcohen··on When the "R" goes missing from R&D (2021)
You need to document everything you do.
mjcohen··on The Rest Is Silliness: Peter Schickele and PDQ Bach remembered
This is a version I haven't seen before of my favorite piece:

mjcohen··on Philadelphia Jury Hits Monsanto with $2.25B Roundup Verdict
I guess that this somewhat contradicts Monsanto's real motto:

Without chemicals, life itself would be unprofitable.

mjcohen··on Ask HN: Is it really so dull to work in huge company?
Then again, you may get to work on something challenging like how to brick printers if they don't use your ink.
mjcohen··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
Germany and Japan did not have anything in their constitutions advocating the destruction of the allies.
mjcohen··on Ohio gives historical status to building that once housed CompuServe
I used Compuserve a lot. I remember, on a forum for a Casio handheld with Basic, telling of my discovery of undocumented POKE and PEEK commands, which caused much excitement. I wrote a memory dump routine using these. Ahh, the good old days.
mjcohen··on Effect Cases in Switch
A comment about ternarys:

Nested ternarys can be quite readable if they are formatted like nested if-then-elses.

Here's an example from some awk code I wrote about 15 years ago.

       vval = ((k > 1 \
         ? substr(vval, 1, k-1) \
         : "" \
         ) \
        substr(vv, length(vpfx)+1, 1) \
        vvn \
        (k1 <= length(vval) \
         ? substr(vval, k1) \
         : "" \
         ) \
        );
Well, at least I find it readable.
mjcohen··on Moderna Melanoma Vaccine Cuts Death Rate in Half
It might be a worthwhile investment in self-preservation.
mjcohen··on AI’s big rift is like a religious schism
An exponential curve is not a singularity; 1/(x-a) is as x goes to a.
mjcohen··on Simple feature gross code
You assume that word and line are the same length. Haven't checked beyond that.
mjcohen··on Android isn't cool with teenagers, and that's a big problem
This may be weird, but the main thing keeping me on my Galaxy S10e (and the Android phones earlier and Palm/Handspring even earlier) is the Note Everything app. I find this a very convenient app to keep text, photo, and voice notes in. It also allows you to backup everything and then reload it in a new phone. I have notes in there from 2010 and before.

It keeps its info in a SQLite database, so, if I had to, I could move it to an iPhone, but it would probably take a lot of work which I am not willing to do now.

If there was an easy way of moving the notes, maybe.

mjcohen··on FBI Director: FISA Section 702 warrant requirement a 'de facto ban'
I wrote this in a story of mine in 2012:

I knew that the organization most often responsible for terrorist plots on American soil was the FBI, and I decided to take advantage of this.

mjcohen··on The diamond world takes radical steps to stop a pricing plunge
Works fine in Brave in MacOS 12.7.1.
mjcohen··on Show HN: Open-source digital stylus with six degrees of freedom
I have an Anker PowerConf 300 webcam which (on Mac or Windows) can go up to 115 degrees with the AnkerWork software.
mjcohen··on A linear algebra trick for computing Fibonacci numbers fast
Any solution to a linear recurrence relation is exponentially bounded by the root(s) of the characteristic polynomial.
mjcohen··on Who invented file extensions in file names?
Originally extensions were only 3 characters long.
mjcohen··on Solution 26370: Removing a new Texas Instruments calculator from the package
I got this package opener in 2007 from Amazon for $12. It has two parts - a retractable blade to start the cut in the plastic and a "nibbler" to work its way around the plastic. Still works.

mjcohen··on HP fails to derail claims that it bricks scanners on printers when ink runs low
You might try a separate duplex scanner. Less than $200. There are a number of very compact ones. Connect with wi-fi or usb.
mjcohen··on Imba – A friendly full-stack language
For the new version of Opa, seems like you are reinventing COBOL:

A COBOL program basically divided into the following four divisions: Identification division. Environment division. Data division. Procedure division.

mjcohen··on School surveillance tools are harming kids, report finds
I long ago concluded that karma is bs. Just look at all the crooks and liars who hardly ever get punished and when they do its a slap on the wrist.
mjcohen··on Complexity theory’s 50-year journey to the limits of knowledge
Depends what you mean by larger. The example that occurs to me is the priblem of determining whether or not an integer is prime. This can be done relatively quickly for numbers of the form 2^p-1 where p is prime, but would take much longer for a much smaller prime not of this form.
mjcohen··on Amazon Cuts Dozens of House Brands as It Battles Costs, Regulators
Of course Western Digital has been having its own problems with ssd drives dying.
mjcohen··on How to Roman Republic 101
Tried it, and you are right about experimental being gone. I tried signing into google and got a message about browser doesn't support Javascript. Gave up.
mjcohen··on The day I locked everyone out of the company intranet
Same thing on a Unix/Linux level: When using find, I always do it first with -print until I see the files I want. Only then do I add the actual action I want.
mjcohen··on Introduction to math for game developers
The cross product does exists in any number or dimensions (at least 2). In n dimensions, the cross product of n-1 vectors is the determinant with the axis vectors as the first row and each of the n-1 vectors as the next rows. In 3 dimensions, n=3, so the first row is (i, j, k) and the next 2 rows are the two vectors.
mjcohen··on Designing a Language Without a Parser
That is also a good way to start an improv scene. Figure out later, if at all, what is really going on.
mjcohen··on Every factorial approximates a power
The basic approximation I use is n! ~ (n/e)^n so ln(n!) ~ n(ln(n)-1). The basic inequality is (n/e)^n < n! < (n/e)^{n+1}. When considering convergence of series using the n-th root test, (n!)^{1/n} ~ n/e so ((an)!)^{1/n} = (((an)!)^{1/(an)})^a ~(an/e)^a = a^an^a/e^a.
