mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Social Democracy and Democratic Socialism are the same thing
mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Who exactly imposed those tarriffs?
mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
So what's wrong with that phrase?

Norway collectively owns its 'key economic drivers'.

Is that a bad thing?, they're still capitalistic, just with better respect for its people.

You probably collectively own things via the stock market too.

mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
You are wrong.

The term you are looking for is communism, not socialism.

Nordic countries are practicing Democratic Socialism.

DSA is not communist.

Why are you spreading this crap when it takes 2 neurons and a few searches to find out you are wrong?

mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
No they do not and it doesn't say that anywhere in the linked website.

Why are you lieing?

From what i can read they want the same scandinavian model with strong labor unions, universal public services and so on.

mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
You're wrong again.

> "democratic socialism" is an oxymoron

No it's not, check out Europe, mostly northern countries, it's working just fine.

> At the very least there is no pre-existing example of democracy and socialism working side by side.

Again, northern europe screaming at you.

So you're wrong...

Also, you're Canadian, maybe it's not your business

mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
They are part of the democratic party so they are democrats.

As for their agenda, you are wrong.

mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
> Basically, the whole talk about retaliatory tariffs is silly.

Why?, retaliatory - in response to US, tarriffs - taxes, whether on export or import, as you noted, doesnt matter much. Effect depends on who needs to either sell or buy the tarrifed items the most.

mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Tarriffs will hurt your existing industries, they will lose sales/revenue.

Since you are getting hurt you play tit-for-tat to get the other to knock it off.

So you add export taxes to items they care about (oil/fertilizer/...) and compensate the losses incurred by existing industries.

You also add tarriffs on items that have alternatives, like alcohool.

Maybe add tarriffs on items with elastic prices, say 100% tarriff on digital services. Software services will have to adjust prices so they end up the same after tarriffs since few people will accept youtube or netflix doubling in price.

This hurts both countries but will get a result - either free trade or no trade.

In the meanwhile, Trump's entourage has derivative bets on this and take massive proffits shorting everyone. For them, this is all massively profitable.

mittensc··on U.S. preparing to force Netherlands to ban ASML from selling to China
The Netherlands asks if China is drunk?

Note: France/UK still have nukes and the Netherlands can develop its own if it needs any

mittensc··on U.S. preparing to force Netherlands to ban ASML from selling to China
The bigger worry is China pushing a home grown company to produce the same equipment and provide whatever state resources they need.

Hard to protect against espionage and hard to compete with a company that has massive state subsidies.

Easier to just sell them the equipment to prevent this.

Note: they can already produce DUV equipment, just probably not economically viable (yet)

mittensc··on U.S. preparing to force Netherlands to ban ASML from selling to China
> If the Netherlands refuses to enforce this ban on ASML, the U.S. can impose sanctions.

New sanctions?, existing sanctions?, tariffs?, that threat is a recurring theme and is losing its power since Trump can just impose sanctions if he wakes up in a bad mood.

What happens if ASML/The Netherlands refuses to comply?

The US imposes sanctions and prevents suppliers from selling to ASML?

That would mean ASML in turn starts refusing to sell to the US and maintain equipment used in the US...

Who's losing the most here?, who caves first?

As for the ban... it's for older DUV machines which China can already build themselves.

EUV machines are still banned.

mittensc··on Old.reddit.com is now login only
I tended to use it with an account when posting on hobby subreddits and without an account otherwise.

They are going to lose casual posters as well.

mittensc··on Old.reddit.com is now login only
needed an excuse to compulsively stop visiting, this is perfect

funny that i wasn't getting anything useful out of it for some time

new version doesn't even work properly on firefox with ublock, comments almost never show up, video doesn't work...

mittensc··on Kyiv blows up biggest Wildberries hub in drone attack
Putin is only powerful as long as institutions continue to follow him.

He doesnt throw people out of windows himself, he has his state do that.

Move enough people away from supporting him and he's gone.

mittensc··on Kyiv blows up biggest Wildberries hub in drone attack
Prigozin had a chance

When it happened it seemed that the emperor was naked and nobody would protect Putin.

All the military ordered to stop him just did not do anything or joined them.

Tried to bomb him but plane was shot down and that was that.

Only problem is Prigozin called it off, he likely forgot to hide his family

Someone more ruthless in his place could have done more

mittensc··on Kyiv blows up biggest Wildberries hub in drone attack
> The trouble is that Russia's elites have little influence over Putin.

Well, seems like they better start working on that

I'm curious what happens when elites next to putin start losing their wealth by losing their actual assets

mittensc··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
ideas, sure - "i think we should build an open source OS."

ideas + execution - not really - (Linus Torvalds sharing his work on Linux and that taking off)

mittensc··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
he's missing out on any attention that his shared thoughts would bring? and all benefits that might bring if he's good at what he does.

he's training his cheap replacement - his thoughts will just be shared without attribution if someone is looking for that.

mittensc··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Google can properly classify email spam.

They should be able to fight this as well.

Problem is they are the ones funding the poor quality spam and they're in turn profiting by taking money from advertisers.

mittensc··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
perhaps this would not be a problem if google did not directly monetize AI Slop... for that matter why even include AI crap in search.
mittensc··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
I mainly shared my projects for learning, discussion and bragging rights.

LLMs just use everything, generate similar code with no attribution and keep users from visiting, so no bragging rights or attention.

Worse, there are some PRs that seem fully generated ...

So i mostly stopped sharing and started pulling my old repos offline.

At this pace, i don't want to compete with a clone of myself in the future that will do my work for much cheaper.

mittensc··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
tactical win - they achieved that quite easily.

strategic failure - iran shrugged it off and now are causing massive damage to world economy with no end in sight.

mittensc··on US Military asks troops for 'creative and unconventional' ideas to punish Iran
> Could be deliberate theater. The real plan is a containment and a slow economic collapse of Iran anyway.

Doesn't seem like there's a coherent plan. What you are saying is the old plan from long before Trump, that was torpedoed. Going back to that is saying they've failed in whatever this was.

Also that is iran's plan as well, survive while the US suffers and eventually gives up like Vietnam ...

> If the EU and Japan pay higher energy costs, that is an added bonus for Trump.

US also pays added costs... and Trump is hurting from that

The only one profiting is China since they've mostly transitioned away from oil...

mittensc··on I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Mask
It seems real and familiar, and in a way I can see how this was written.

> It's exhaustive writing, something an LLM can easily be tasked with

It is also something someone with that condition can work/agonize over every little detail for a lot of time.

> it covers everything an Autist might encounter, it has a story arc, a protagonist hero narrator, who after suffering and setbacks and minor improvements suddenly has a final revelation and thus finds fame, fortune and a wife in the end

It is the life story of a 30 year old man, so yes, lots of items.

Wife sounds like they found each other during school, she being the one chasing him, which could be for a lot of reasons, eventually everyone hooks up and settles down.

As for fame and fortune... he found his niche in the military working hard. Hard work generally overcomes everything. As for fame, a good person/worker generally is appreciated, so not really out of the ordinary.

> It reads like it tries to pull you in and then sell you something. That would be Christianity, Manliness, etc...

It's easy to find fixations, he even said it was for the estethic...

Still, yeah, it was weird checking out the website not being aware of it, so ok, maybe?

> it rejects an professional diagnosis and therapy as career damaging

For older people it was... getting 'dignosed' was really badly looked upon, you are probably young.

> instead trust some conservative manosphere blog from the internet, and "suffering through it"

fixations, that doesnt mean we should do the same, everyone has their flaws.

the blog was fairly at the end and only mentioned for the esthetic/dressing part.

reading through it didnt seem he was really a believer.

> Yeah, I'm not buying it. These blogs are the reason why the internet is dead.

Your oppinion, for me it actually brought memories of stumbling upon other blogs 15-20 years ago.

I don't think its an LLM, i would be disappointed if that were the case

mittensc··on The bond market isn’t buying what Fed Chair Warsh is selling
> They are bleeding out. You do nothing

There are a lot of people that do not know what to do.

There are also wounds that you can't really do anything about without hospital. (internal bleeding?!)

The funny thing is, as analogies go, here the friend tells you to bugger off because of israel and tells the mugger to come back and help him... mugger stabs him some more

mittensc··on Volkswagen CFO addresses plant closures, job losses as profits sink
Might be better to actually start competing...

BYD / Tesla / other EV makers are eating their lunch and all they can think is how to lower production costs ...

Might be better to actually copy what others are doing, build better EVs, vertical integration, optimize factories, figure out battery manufacturing, in-house as much as possible instead of giving away your tech via joint ventures....

mittensc··on Data center opponents stage 142 protests across 42 US states
> Will the American government have an easier time taxing the physical datacenter in the United States or the billionaire that owns it in Tahiti?

The datacenters already get long term tax deductions, probably easier to tax the billionaire's assets with a wealth tax on stock market assets...

mittensc··on Data center opponents stage 142 protests across 42 US states
other side:

what benefit does an AI datacenter bring to a community?

why wouldn't people complain?

on that note, if LLMs dissappeared tomorrow, what would be the loss for common folk?

Solution seems simple, build them away from communities, arrange for sustainable power generation and water use, problem is that eats into datacenter profits...
