mitchjj··on Incident with Github.com [resolved]
That's good feedback, there's been a lot of discussion internally about how pricing has affected sentiment and what the trade-offs were from previous decision makers there over the last couple of years. Without it seeming like lip service, there is a 'startup' plan in the works, to sit between free and pro, sounds like it may be the right move as this isn't the first time we've heard it.

This week we've released a free plan and overhauled the mid-tier; am keen to hear whether this alleviates the 'small team' pain against others in market

They run on top of GH, so if GH goes down, so does Blacksmith, every time

Worth being upfront with, I'm an employee, but; Buildkite.

Frontier labs and global saas heavyweights run CI through us, plus a crop of open source tooling like Bazel, vLLM, Firecracker, Rails, Ray, Sorbet and Rust.

Shopify, Uber, Airbnb, Canva stresstested the platform ten years ago for scaling issues.

You need to take a little time to design upfront and take advantage of dynamically programmable primitives. It isn't the same ease/convenience as Actions. Bit more available though.

Let me know if you'd like help trying out Buildkite. Control plane with choice of hosting/hosted alongside lots of other flexible primitives.

The frontier AI (OpenAI, Anthropic, Cursor, Mistral, xAI, Perplexity plus more) all run CI on Buildkite, without the suffering.

As a comparison, Buildkite is now running 1.5B job mins per week without this downtime.
mitchjj··on GitHub is the wrong shape for this new world
"The winners of the next decade won't build a better pull request. They'll build the infrastructure that makes software generation, validation, and deployment operate at machine scale."

This is funny, as all the listed primitives and this scale of reliable build infra is the exact shape of Buildkite.

Happy to help with whatever you need when the time is right!
mitchjj··on HashiCorp co-founder says GitHub 'no longer a place for serious work'
Another option is Buildkite with hybrid architecture... Your hardware, our control plane, managed through GUI or CLI. Instant agent push, run up to over 100k concurrent agents, fan out jobs, generate pipelines at runtime...

Apologies for shameless plug... have you considered Buildkite? Our statuspage is a sea of green even as we hit 1.3b minutes/wk (GHA sits at 2.1/wk now). Much less maintenance overhead than Jenkins, more dynamic featureset. The trial is all-access, unlocks the full product and can be extended past 30 days. Real human eng on standby throughout.

VP at Buildkite here; let me know if you need anything as you begin to move over to us for orchestration. The new trial we just released unlocks everything in the platform, and we can extend past 30 days if you need.

Nah that's great, and valuable. I hear you on, boring and routine likely facilitates further digging. Thanks for taking the time, I appreciate it!
mitchjj··on GitHub Actions is slowly killing engineering teams
Yeah, not an ad. Most folk haven't heard of Buildkite, the ones that have and have used it, more often than not are pretty enthusiastic.
mitchjj··on GitHub Actions is slowly killing engineering teams
Yeah, PS did a great job and provoked good business impact too.

We'll publish details when we do retire it to show how it performed and the reactions. Something like this thread is great for feedback to contrast against other sources.

Would love to hear more from you on why
mitchjj··on GitHub Actions is slowly killing engineering teams
Understandable; let me ask a a question. You don't want to play these sort of games (read a paragraph, enter a word). For you, browsing to find a compelling devtool, what makes you say, this is legit? Can you share examples of a couple of sites that do exactly what you are after?

I say that not because we wanted the CLI homepage to be 'legit', the light context there is we needed a way to quickly change direction from a previous failed initiative that added stark category marketing across the classic site... so took the opportunity to do purposefully do something very different from conventions, rightly or wrongly.

Will absolutely confirm this is was a (lovely) surprise for the team at BK to read, not an ad or commission or anything of the sort
mitchjj··on GitHub Actions is slowly killing engineering teams
Buildkite has been around since 2013, hardly the next hype train
mitchjj··on GitHub Actions is slowly killing engineering teams
Can 100% confirm this is not an ad (at least not for Buildkite) and was a lovely surprise to read for the team.

Hello mate, Head of Brand and Design at BK here. Thanks for the feedback, genuinely; the homepage experiment has been divisive, in a great way. Some folk love it, some folk hate it, some just can't be bothered with it. All fair.

Glad that the classic site hit the mark, but a lot work to do to make that clearer than it is; we're working on the next iteration that will sunset the CLI homepage into an easter egg.

Happy to take more critique, either on the execution or the rabbit hole.
