mistyvales··on Pixel 11 doesn't yet meet the GrapheneOS security standards and may be skipped
Guess I should order the 10 to replace the 9a I dropped down the stairs.
mistyvales··on Kolibri: A Sovereign Open-Weight Model
The Sega 32X game??
mistyvales··on Why media fans want to escape algorithms with CDs, DVDs and vinyl
I never stopped buying. Let's just say my collection of various physical media is.. unruly at best. Moving is a pain but I don't look back.

Note that I do still stream and buy digital on Bandcamp though.

mistyvales··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
Would a Grease Weasel work for that situation?
mistyvales··on Jellyfin 12.0
I still use the free version of Plex and got it set up in a jail on my FreeBSD server. Serves my needs for now, and also use Infuse like a lot of people here on my Apple TV 4K. I have no need to transcoding or anything because all my media consumption is at home these days. If Plex does shit the bed, I will have to rethink my setup for Jellyfin..
mistyvales··on Show HN: Sol, my macOS music player and jukebox app, is now free and open source
Funny, I was JUST looking for a Foobar-like equivalent for MacOS. I'll have to try this out later. I use Roon for daily use at home, but having a network-free local player that supports everything I play at native bit and sample rate is a huge plus.

Larry David approved?
mistyvales··on How much of HN is AI?
I'm sick of it, but you are 100% right. I'm sure a good number of active readers here want even more AI-related articles.
mistyvales··on uBlock Origin is giving up the fight to keep ads off Facebook
Or just use Jellyfin
mistyvales··on pfSense 2.9.0 – New Features and Changes
Interesting to see them already using FreeBSD 16.0 when that isn't even slated for a production release until Dec 2027.
mistyvales··on How Hollywood stopped making movies in Hollywood
Makes me want to move to BC :D
mistyvales··on How Hollywood stopped making movies in Hollywood
If that happens, I'll never watch a new movie or show again. I'm already hating a lot of Netflix-ified shows that pander to phone slaves with no attention span, so have stopped that dreck already. I have tens of thousands of hours of old films and shows to watch and would never finish before I die, so I am good.
mistyvales··on How Hollywood stopped making movies in Hollywood
Almost every time I see a Canadian character actor I guarantee the film or show was shot there. Shows like X-Files, BSG reboot, The Expanse.. all loaded with Canadian actors

mistyvales··on WLV-01, a monochrome digital photography camera built from scratch
I've been briefly using mine and love it so far. The software is highly polished and the web browser live view is awesome. Waiting to buy some E-mount lenses but my old C-mount TV lenses seem to work pretty well right now.
mistyvales··on REO Trucks I4 4WD Pickup Truck Starts at $21,500
Who makes the engine and powertrain? I didn't see it on the site.
mistyvales··on My Steam Machine is a 50ft HDMI cable
I moved into a smaller place and didn't really need a remote play option anymore. That's basically the only reason.
mistyvales··on Why Vancouver is always a stand-in for San Francisco in movies and TV shows (2021)
You can also tell if something was shot in Canada by all the Canadian actors all over the place. I recognize so many people from X-Files, and so many other shows.
mistyvales··on AMD Ryzen AI Halo – $4k AI Dev Kit
I had a pre-order in for the 128GB DIY motherboard only model last Oct 2025, but cancelled it and just upgraded my current 5900x rig to 64GB instead and replaced the x370 board with a used x470. Really with I had pulled the trigger, but I honestly am just fine with the performance as is on my current system for now. The Framework should have lasted me just as long, but who knows. Hoping my current rig lasts at last another 4 years..
mistyvales··on My Steam Machine is a 50ft HDMI cable
I used a Raspberry Pi 4 as a Steam Link for many years. It was only 1080p60 and had a touch of input delay, but it wasn't terrible. It actually got better with bug fixes over the years.
mistyvales··on PlayStation Is Deleting 551 Movies from Customers' Accounts
Pretty sure the Terms of Use say just that. They should update the language on the frontend though.
mistyvales··on Jolla Phone (October 2026)
I'm getting Nokia N9 MeeGo vibes from this. Also reminded me of the tablet debacle which I suppose is ancient history at this point..
mistyvales··on The Commodore Callback 8020 smart flip phone
Absolutely loved my N9! Used it for many years until I switched to Lumia series until 2018
mistyvales··on The AirPods Effect
I stopped listening to music on my walks and bike rides years ago. I sit at home listening to music all day while I work, so to me it's a nice respite to enjoy the world around me.

mistyvales··on The Pirate Bay Remains Resilient, 20 Years After the Raid
Disney has the 1.33 OAR Simpsons now, but you have to select the option. I don't watch it on there because it looks too clean and waxy for my tastes.
mistyvales··on I made my phone slow on purpose
It's sad that it's come to this..
mistyvales··on Removing the modem and GPS from my 2024 RAV4 hybrid
I was debating replacing the head unit in my old VW, but I actually like that it has a six-disc CD changer, SD card slot (32GB max, with support for MP3, WAV, etc.), 40-pin iPod connection, and regular AUX in. I use my phone with a USB-C DAC and have never felt like I needed anything else. With AUX I can plug in my Walkmans as well (both cassette and MiniDisc)!

Dangerous, but hilarious (Dubai raver has set up a 303 and 606 to make acid house while he drives): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwYtjQk0QaU

mistyvales··on Maybe you shouldn't install new software for a bit
Turns out it was a pipewire.conf file causing some sort of crash (nothing in logs show anything). If I remove that file, everything works.

FYI this was on a laptop that began life from version 42. My main PC started out on 38 and has made it to 43 with no problems (including a motherboard swap).. will be updating to 44 this weekend.
