misterdata··on If Solar Panels Are So Clean, Why Do They Produce So Much Toxic Waste?
After braking the turbine isn't generating the energy it needs to in order to be net positive.
misterdata··on Gatwick Airport: Drone sightings cause delays
They have actually stopped that programme. https://www.ad.nl/binnenland/politie-stopt-met-inzetten-van-...
misterdata··on Show HN: Smallest Node.js Docker images
That's exactly what the README suggests to do under 'Usage'. First it says 'FROM node', which is the regular 'fat' image. In this image it then runs `npm install`. Further on there is another 'FROM' which starts from the minimal image and copies over all the JS code (including the node_modules directory which has been populated by npm) from the 'fat' image (this of course would fail for bindings that require libraries outside the node_modules directory, although it is relatively easy to add more COPY statements to also put these in the appropriate locations).
misterdata··on LiteTree: SQLite with Branches
This is apparently intended to be used for a blockchain that contains SQL transactions in the blocks [1]. As there can be multiple 'heads' of a blockchain (before the network settles on a longest chain), there is a chance the head you picked as being the currently 'longest chain' eventually will not be on the longest chain at all. Hence you'd need the ability to go back to a point in time and execute the queries for another head, should it become the longest one.

This also explains why merging is not included (it is simply not needed for this application).

I did an SQL-on-blockchain a while ago [2][3] and ran into this problem as well. I solved it by not committing the last N transactions, and re-executing them for each read query in a transaction. This obviously is not a very efficient solution (and still runs the risk of having to re-execute the whole chain of queries in case a chain split occurs further than N blocks before the current head).

misterdata··on Is it Pokemon or Big Data? (2016)
Actually made this a little while ago for Dutch municipality names. Works quite well as even Dutch people get confused about which ones are real. https://diasli.de/848

Try https://diasli.de (not able to export to HTML or a component yet, but the editor is a bit better and works across browsers)

misterdata··on Proton Native – React Native for the desktop
> In particular, layout is tricky because DOM trees imply both bottom-up and top-down constraints.

Well you can always choose to roll your own layout algorithm and position everything in the DOM using absolute coordinates - e.g. https://diasli.de implements an 'auto layout' mechanism disregarding DOM layout.

misterdata··on The ‘app’ you can’t trash: how SIP is broken in High Sierra
This may be true, but still I've encountered very few problems installing, updating and removing software on my Mac despite this compared to other platforms I've used. Why would having separate package managers coexist be a bad thing if they can be complementary? (e.g. Homebrew installs different kinds of things than the drag-to-Applications-folder mechanism).

misterdata··on Netherlands fishmongers accuse herring-tasters of erring
I'm also skeptical about how constant the quality of the fries from one place will be. If, as I suspect, there is a large amount of variation over time, this test is useless and more like a lottery.
misterdata··on When somebody loses weight, where does the fat go?
The question is whether the body spends any energy outside of that hour after exercising (e.g. by growing muscle, etc.) than it would otherwise. That would make exercise more effective when considering longer periods of time.

misterdata··on Catena: SQL on a blockchain
Hey, that's my project! :-) Previous discussion here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14548174
misterdata··on BigchainDB – A scalable blockchain database
Not sure whether BigchainDB implements consensus/PoW, but my attempt at building a blockchain-based database sure does. [1] Scaling a solution like that however is very difficult, and I can imagine BigchainDB aiming for applications where consensus/PoW is less needed.

misterdata··on Show HN: Pg_blkchain – Postgres blockchain extension
So something like Catena (https://github.com/pixelspark/catena, I wrote this)? It does SQL based on Transactions stored in a Blockchain (and coincidentally speaks the postgres pq client protocol).
misterdata··on How a South African ISP Hacks Its Subscribers Each Month
'kak' means 'shit' in Dutch as well. South African is quite similar to Dutch for colonial reasons.

misterdata··on MacOS High Sierra
Try 'reset networking settings', this fixed it for me. Appears to be related to mediaserverd crashes (check Privacy->Analytics if that is the case on your 6S as well).
misterdata··on MacOS High Sierra
Experienced the same issue, please have a look at Privacy->Analytics. If you (like me) find a lot of errors related to mediaserverd, then 'reset network settings' will likely fix it (like it fixed the lag on my 6S after upgrading to iOS 11).
misterdata··on Mac OS High Sierra automatically checks EFI firmware each week
macOS Sierra already periodically checks the firmware for Thunderbolt Ethernet adapters:

/usr/libexec/firmwarecheckers/ethcheck/ethcheck:

usage: ethcheck: [ --save -b <eth nvram bin output file> ] [ --integrity-check [ -b <eth nvram bin input file> ] ] [ --show-hashes [ -b <eth nvram bin input file> ] ] [ --cleanup -b <eth nvram bin input/output file> [ --send-change-in-firmware enable/disable] [ --version]

misterdata··on SQL on Ethereum Blockchain with Presto
That might just depend on what parts of a "SQL database" you'd implement using a blockchain, and on the application type. You could e.g. segregate the data and only use the blockchain to authorize or timestamp transactions, for instance. In the latter case, Blockchain is just another consensus layer, and all distributed databases need one. See also https://github.com/pixelspark/catena, which uses the blockchain like a replication journal, logging only mutating queries and providing authorization based on public key crypto (disclosure: I am the author).
misterdata··on Another Ransomware Outbreak Is Going Global
I did see those console windows here on Windows 10 but I am not (yet?) affected. So might also be related to something else (Windows Defender updates?).
