missingcolours··on HB 481: Georgia law criminalizes abortion, subjects women to life in prison
The Supreme Court's ruling on same sex marriage didn't have that effect, as least so far. "If given the chance, they would roll back what we just achieved, which makes them immoral monsters" seems to be working perfectly well as a replacement argument.
missingcolours··on Facebook Asking for Some New Users' Email Passwords
Title seems misleading. Per the article it seems they demand email confirmation, but merely offer to access your email for you in order to accomplish that.

(This is not a defense of Facebook's actions here)

missingcolours··on South Korea's program of higher wages and taxes – so far, it's not working
In 2012 there was a significant increase in income and sales taxes which were phased in over several years: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_California_Proposition_...
missingcolours··on Detroit's Big Comeback: Out of Bankruptcy, a Rebirth
Expensive downtown and cheap in the neighborhoods, so no, but it's far less clear to me that the neighborhoods will rebound in the way that the downtown area has (nearly all of Detroit's non-gentrified areas are overwhelmingly black, and across the midwest predominantly black neighborhoods have proven quite resilient to gentrification, for better or worse).
missingcolours··on Why Do Women Earn Less Than Men? Evidence from Bus and Train Operators [pdf]
For anyone who wants to read more about this claim it's most commonly referred to as the "success sequence".
missingcolours··on Fast Train to Failure: California’s Mismanaged High-Speed Rail Project
Endeavoring to solve all of our transportation problems in a single rail line seems like the underlying issue. If HSR had been built successfully and fairly directly, on or under budget, it would have been much easier to muster political support for future expansions.
missingcolours··on Why Do Hospitals Hate Sleep So Much?
A key lesson I learned with our first child was "just about everything gets easier once you leave the hospital", so with our second we prioritized GTFOing ASAP. It was a good decision.
missingcolours··on What Minimum-Wage Foes Got Wrong About Seattle
> Or they cut the service level so maybe the table will be wiped down before you sit there and maybe the garbage will be taken out before it gets so full you can't throw stuff in there.

Anecdotally, this seems like a common route for businesses to take. I was shocked moving from the Midwest to the Bay Area at the low cleanliness of tables at fast food and fast casual restaurants. Prices aren't as much higher as I expected them to be, but a dirty table at a restaurant was basically unheard of where I came from, and it's expected in San Jose.

missingcolours··on Tell Your Co-Workers How Much Money You Make
The thing about this is that people are bad at objectively analyzing contributions, especially their own. Some aspects of value to an employer/manager include your regular work output quantity and quality, ability to learn new skills quickly (thus being dependable in unexpected situations), willingness to jump in to new challenges, mentoring other team members, etc. People often overlook these factors in others and say "I do the same work as them, or more!" and get upset about different compensation. I mean, certainly sometimes there is value in sharing this information, but there are also plenty of situations where it causes discord more than it helps the people involved, so I don't know that "discuss your salary!" is universally good advice.
missingcolours··on Apple plans new U.S. campus, to pay $38B in foreign cash taxes
Both your numerator and your divisor are incorrect. The 2 million number is "creating and supporting", i.e. not direct Apple employees. The 123k number is "full-time equivalent", i.e. "total number of hours worked by employees / 40", where 2 employees @ 20 hours/week = 40 hours = 1 full-time equivalent. So actual full-time employees might be a small portion of the 123k, due to the workforce ofApple retail stores, etc.
missingcolours··on An American City Where the Government Barely Exists
I did some research a few years ago and HP had one of the higher revenue streams per capita in the entire state. There's lots of money in the city government, but not a lot of results, which points you toward the underlying problems.
