mishac··on JavaScript Errors: An Exceptional History
People totally blame C (and C++). There's entire classes of use-after-free and buffer flow errors not possible in other languages, which is what leads to people advocating for Rust or Go (or ADA for that matter, though it's obviously not popular anymore).
mishac··on JavaScript Errors: An Exceptional History
IIRC console.log was a non-standard addition made by FireBug.
mishac··on Why are there no animals with three legs?
Weirdly, echinoderms are considered part of the Bilateria clade.

Apparently they're bilateral as juveniles and only become radially symmetric as adults (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilateria)

mishac··on Ask HN: Stuck with an unpronounceable product name
Hmmm, I instinctively pronounced as "Cube-zerve"
mishac··on The Brain Needs Animal Fat
There are a bunch of regions that don't use much ghee, but instead use mustard or coconut oil.
mishac··on ZFS on Linux 0.7.13
At this point it may not even help. OpenZFS forked from Oracle ZFS like 10 years ago, so even if Oracle dual licensed it as GPL, the OpenZFS folks with a decade of non-Oracle code contributions, would have to contact every contributor for permission to re-license as well.
mishac··on Bitbucket Pipes
Bitbucket has had CI too, with bitbucket pipelines. I think the innovation here is the UI not the idea of CI.
mishac··on Wine 4.0 released
IIRC you can run wine on cygwin, so I wouldn't be terribly surprised if wine on WSL worked.
mishac··on Google proposes changes to Chromium which would disable uBlock Origin
You appear to be forgetting that a huge part of the story was government action to limit the power of the company that made that browser, both in the US and especially in the EU.
mishac··on Bash 5.0 released
The full manual is here. https://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/bashref.html GNU projects tend have info pages that are a lot more complete and thorough then their man pages, so that'd be a good place to check too.
mishac··on Running FreeBSD on OS X using xhyve, a port of bhyve
No more so that virtualizing one linux distro on another. Or running a Windows VM on Windows....
mishac··on An error message, still found in Windows 10, is a mistake from 1974
You'd have to modify and recompile the old programs, which may not be possible.
mishac··on OpenIndiana Hipster 2018-10 (illumos/OpenSolaris Unix) Released
Oh! Thanks for the info. I wish I knew this 3 days ago when I decided to install OpenIndiana in a VM to play with.
mishac··on OpenIndiana Hipster 2018-10 (illumos/OpenSolaris Unix) Released
I'm not sure if it's still in development. On sourceforge (!) it looks like there are no updates since 2014, and French wikipedia(https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schillix) says it's not been updated since 2012.
mishac··on OpenIndiana Hipster 2018-10 (illumos/OpenSolaris Unix) Released
Illumos is the name of the kernel, that they all use.

OmniOS is discontinued I believe.

So that leaves SmartOS (that's basically a hypervisor server, with actual applications handled in zones/containers/vms), or OpenIndianna, which is a "normal" distro with optional gui etc.

mishac··on Tim Berners-Lee says tech giants may have to be split up
I think that depends on what country you're in. The only people I know who are on whatsapp are immigrants who use it to talk to family in the old country.
mishac··on Facebook exodus: Nearly half of young users have deleted the app
I think he means "written in ink" in the sense that something you post cannot be erased, much like how if you write something with a pen, vs with a pencil.
mishac··on IBM acquires Red Hat
It was he French monarchy that helped the Americans, so there really was no ideological affinity.

The revolution in France wasnt until several years after the US war against the British was over.

mishac··on IBM acquires Red Hat
Yeah the whole freedesktop.org stack is to a large extent RedHat folks.
mishac··on Not Lisp again (2009)
I think it's that you can calculate the value, but you can't (or can't as easily) create a new function that is the derivative of another function, and pass that around.
mishac··on RISC OS is being relicensed under the Apache license
How often do you use a single stick or wheel, that isn't part of some much more complicated machine?

(I won't argue about the knife. That is both simple and useful)

mishac··on OpenBSD 6.4 released
It's a good GNUism though, that I also wish the BSDs supported. No-one's saying that the BSDs should start supporting GNU style --long-options or switch to info instead of man, but friendlier help messages are always a nice thing.
mishac··on MongoDB switches up its open source license
Minor correction: it was IBM, not Microsoft
mishac··on The Awful German Language (1880)
Porcupine is the same thing, just using latinate roots rather than native English/Germanic ones.
mishac··on Great Vowel Shift
Pleonasm is more of a needless redundancy like "It's déjà vu all over again."
mishac··on Great Vowel Shift
Human languages aren’t usually concerned with maximal information density though. Multiple layers of redundancy are often present. Features like noun verb agreement, grammatical gender, pleonasms, and even redundant words (last will and testament, vim and vigor etc) are used in various languages despite the redundancy, to increase clarity.
mishac··on Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark released
I think they'll probably stick to LTS. There's no 17.04 for WSL AFAIK, so I doubt there'd be a 17.10.
mishac··on Why restaurants hate Grubhub/Seamless
I ordered recently from a restaurant in montreal that actually just used shopify itself. seemed to work well enough.
mishac··on Opera Neon concept browser
On Google Chrome i get the exact same thing.
mishac··on Every time we lift a pallet from the shipping room, the server times out (2006)
Do you have a link for the one with the general visiting? Sadly a google search just gave stories of military officers in plan crashes.
