miramba··on Ending our third party fact-checking program and moving to Community Notes model
Every single one of your points is not boolean and depends on the definition and the data you include and exclude. For each you could easily find studies and statistics in either direction. The fact that this is apparently not obvious to you proves the point that all fact-checking is inherently biased and depends on the subjective opinions of the checking person.
miramba··on Ask HN: My 12 year-old nephew just got diagnosed with ADHD, any advice?
...then post some, instead of obviously biased organisations which make a living of treating it as a problem but can't come up with better reasons than -are less likely to finish high school and college -are more likely to experience unemployment -have more difficulty paying bills -are more likely to experience substance use issues

How likely? I'm not bothering looking it up, it should be mentioned right there! Anyway, it sure sounds like the general crime of being poor + not obeying the system as the ruling classes expect. So instead of perhaps checking on the system, lets fill the child with some completely harmless pharmaceuticals:

"If a child taking a stimulant seems sedated or zombie-like, or tearful and irritable, it usually means that the dose is too high and the clinician needs to adjust the prescription to find the right dose."

No way that could mess up a childs mind, right? Everyone thinking otherwise is clearly a flat earther. Disclaimer: I happen to be a clinician, although not in that field, and drug side effects like those - on a child - usually need very, very good justifications or it's malpractice. And just because it seems to have worked for you the right way doesn't mean that it's right for anyone.

Oh, 1000 times this! Literally my research subject in the last weeks, a tablet with a dev OS. Sizewise I love the iPad Mini, but iPadOS is useless. Looking now at a Surface Go: slightly too large. If anyone has another suggestion for a small tablet with Win11 (I know there is none with MacOS), please post it here. Will order from China if needed.
miramba··on Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read?
Based on the amounts of re-reads: Das Boot. A soldier and artist, caught in the strangest of circumstances, either under the most extreme, life threatening danger or waiting for it, both in slow motion. Fascinating, state of the art technology, a miracle of science, but with a need of highly trained, expendable slaves running it for a single immoral purpose. Completely dependent on other peoples decisions, sitting far away in front of a chess board, ready to sacrifice him at any given time for their strategic goals. Any attempt to escape, to scream on the insanity of the situation or even to question it are grounds for immediate execution. Based on a true story. I‘m reading this book for 30 years and the authors ability to describe the nightmare that happened to him still haunts and fascinates me.

miramba··on 159 Employees leave WordPress founder's company after extortion lawsuit
Confusing: Some employees disagreed with the founders actions (how?), so he offered all employees 6 months salary if they leave immediately? Sounds like a lot of damage for what is essentially damage control…

miramba··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
Some ideas: -change screen ratio, increase width against height, like an iPad.

-Why are iPads and iPhones treated so differently? I want to use a pen on the phone and make a phone call on the tablet.

-Double screen, not foldable, but two screens like an open book. I could see a lot of useful applications like showing lists on one screen, details on the other, or a good ereader. In landscape, have a writing app on top and a touch keyboard on the bottom screen.

-Slide the phone into a laptop-like shell and run desktop apps with MacOS. It's the same processor the macs have, no?

-Likewise, attach to a monitor, keyboard and mouse and run desktop apps.

Edit: Linebreaks.

What are you comparing China to? Seriously, it‘s not mentioned in the parents.

miramba··on How deep does life go?
I knew the Titanic was discovered in the mid 80s, but was pretty sure it was not not by this submersible, but a ship pulling a camera. So that took the entire sentence into question and that could IMHO very well been an AI that merged nuclear sub in the 60s and Titanic in the 80s because they were both deep sea operations by this vessel or something.
miramba··on How deep does life go?
Noticed that too and wondered: A typo or AI?
miramba··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
No, not literally…presumably. You believe that the radiation you look at is that old, because you measure certain wavelengths and study ladders, but you can‘t really prove it. Proving that something is 13 billion years old is beyond the capabilities of us apes, at least at this point.
miramba··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
Indeed. But keyword is „inferred“, assuming that all laws worked the same at any point in a gigantic timeframe, at any point in a gigantic universe. Except singularities. And quantum mechanics as it seems? And maybe dark energy. Oh and lately, maybe gravity waves. Btw I was once in a lecture room in Berlin where they claimed that one of the thermodynamic laws where discovered…while giving a lecture. Not too long ago, perhaps 150-200 years. Doesn‘t seem so unlikely that somebody comes up with a new version at some point.
miramba··on Show HN: A user-friendly UI for viewing and editing Markdown files
I am trying to replace google docs with markdowns, but it's difficult to find a suitable editor, so I gave this a try. Here are a few observations on a M1 Mac:

* very clean interface: But too clean for my taste. I like WYSIWYG controls like BIU and I like to apply styles directly (like in Word/gdocs) as opposed to many md-Editors with a code/preview split.

* the HN-title implies that I can quickly edit a .md file, but it asks me to define a project first - no direct file opening.

* I opened an existing file with a h1-header on top, the app adds a title and subtitle on top anyway - not wanted. I couldn't find a way to remove them either.

* It seems I cant move the window by "pulling" the area where the titlebar would be. The window is stuck on a center-top position.

So far, the markdown editor that comes closest to my requirements is the vscode plugin "Markdown Editor" (https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=adameros...)

Thanks for your work and good luck!

Edit: Attempt to style my comment for better readability.

miramba··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
Explanation needed. How can you, a primitive ape on a tiny remote planet with an average lifespan of 80 years (not meant as an insult, I am too), be sure about what happened 15, 20 or 100 BILLION years ago? I think this is what parent meant with: "people of every time thought they had (almost) complete understanding of the universe." - "Don't think it'll be different this time."

miramba··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
Maybe in the US you don‘t need to mandatory register a phone number with a valid id, in most of the world you have to. If anyone can require the phone company to reveal your identity, it‘s the government.
