minusf··on Htmx Is the Future
htmx never claimed it's the solution for everything. there is no next conceptual step. it's sending snippets of html to the client.

i read most htmx threads on hn and it's clear that people are looking for alternatives from react et al. they have a quick look, maybe implement an example and they are angry that it can't do everything they want cause the js ecosystem fatigue is real.

the centerpiece of the htmx site is an actual in-production app that was converted from react and it's better because of that. again, it will not be everybody's case.

htmx will let a lot of developers go all the way without bringing node into their ruby/python/php world for certain workloads. for them it is the future. the rest should stop reading.

minusf··on Htmx Is the Future
it comes exactly with 2 on latest python versions
minusf··on Gmail is showing ads in the middle of the inbox
do ads pay just by looking at them? one needs to click on them and generate at least a lead if not a conversion, no?

--an adblock user since adblocking is a thing and bandcamp/patreon user

minusf··on Pynecone – Performant, customizable web apps in pure Python
not sure what you mean. mailman3 frontends are 2 django apps and it's easy to run and scale up.
minusf··on Is It Time to Quit Coffee for Good?
japanese green tea contains 2-3x more coffeine than coffee but the release time is much slower and more consistent. if spikes are a problem i recommend looking into it. it's very tasty too if prepared correctly. (hojicha, roasted green tea, on the other hand has very little coffeine)
minusf··on New Orleans teenagers found a new proof of the Pythagorean Theorem
wouldnt downvote this because it makes sense in some cases.

while programming and math overlaps in so many places, i think mathemathicians are quite a separate species and KISS is often not on the menu.

a fun, non math heavy book with a window into this i enjoyed is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncle_Petros_and_Goldbach%27s_...

minusf··on XUL Layout is gone
> What makes a UI native?

it's not as philosophical as it may sound. native means amongst other things give me the context menus every other app on the platform is using. firefox context menu on macos is a custom mish mash of what they think makes sense. just follow the os please.

minusf··on Little Snitch Mini
is the non-mini version also not acceptable? that's what i use and it has no iap.
minusf··on WezTerm is a GPU-accelerated cross-platform terminal emulator written in Rust
i think a very effective workflow is missing from this list: open a long running terminal window but have many tmux panes.

many modern wm's and terminals have multitab and multiwindow features but i invested time only into learning tmux and i can use it anywhere. and of course nohup functionality is builtin by definition.

i have said it before and i can say it again: terminals come and go, tmux stays.

minusf··on React is holding me hostage
i dont have a dog in this fight but JSX is PHP all over again with additional "creative solutions" where html and js keywords clash. but they both make html less readable in different measure for different people. please carry on with the arguments :}
minusf··on My manager spent $1M on a backup server that I never used
saying your thousands of servers wont have ssh keys installed when they have arbitrary software installed is disingenuous at best.

thousands of servers are managable only with orchestration solutions, this is a solved problem. the unix world also has evolved from a bash for loop to ssh into servers and read outputs.

i can solve your task in comparable time with pyinfra or ansible executing arbitrary python code on every node with not just csv output but whatever you dream up.

minusf··on My manager spent $1M on a backup server that I never used
i am happy for your tool and productivity.

but where was powershell (introduced in 2006) on unix (introduced in 2016) when admins needed it since epoch?

the tools i have learnt might have more cryptic names but they were there since the beginning.

it took microsoft an awfully long time to realize cmd.exe just wont cut it.

also powershell has no choice but to include the kitchen sink to be usable because there is little composability in the windows shell world compared to the cambrian explosion of unix utilities.

anyway, each to their own, peace.

minusf··on Show HN: Mathesar – open-source collaborative UI for Postgres databases
tableplus is freemium like. in the free version can have 2 tabs open. it also works with way more than postgres.
minusf··on WordPlate: WordPress on Composer with sensible defaults
what familiarity? every single plugin's dashboard/admin page looks completely different.
minusf··on WordPlate: WordPress on Composer with sensible defaults
php's success is tightly connected with LAMP, namely apache mod_php and mysql/mariadb.

it wouldn't be hard to put together the base of wordpress in python on top of django. but hosting companies for decades cared only about mod_php and had no one click uwsgi/fastcgi solutions.

although this still doesnt answer why wordpress became king of the hill in the php ecosystem. was textpattern/drupal/joomla/etc that much worse/harder to use?

in the end wp just looked a tiny bit more professional and an easier name to remember for the masses. this technical dept will be paid for many years to come.

minusf··on Text Is All You Need
all your thoughts and answers are functions of your previous thoughts and answers only?

all your memories are regurgitated memories of previous memories?

dont be so hard on yourself :)

minusf··on Password protect a static HTML page
funnily enough in certain circles "static pages" rather mean "static on server side" but "dynamic on client side".
minusf··on The Toll of Layoff Anxiety
wow, good on you.

i wonder what "very major" problems are for you if these are "very minor".

minusf··on Apple’s 2½ year old iPhone 12 is 6% faster than the new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
mozilla is an org that lost its focus and goes after butterfly projects while their browser is the slowest and heaviest on battery with a tiny user base.

i am a firefox user everywhere except ios, where it's safari. i dont mind the diversity actually, use a safari integrated blocker, not much worse than ublock and i'm sure my battery thanks me for it.

minusf··on AI assistants: The convenient crutch for new developers or a recipe for disaster
how can you use a tool potentionally generating hidden bugs into its suggestions "correctly"? and/or legally ambigious output? these are not important for everyone, but they are to me..
minusf··on AI assistants: The convenient crutch for new developers or a recipe for disaster
as long as these systems are not let near certain industries like aviation software, health stuff i dont mind however people write their software. maybe at this point it will only improve the js frontend mess :)
minusf··on Apple’s 2½ year old iPhone 12 is 6% faster than the new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
what choice is that? firefox or chrome based skins? a duopoly is not a choice.

however silly it is, apple's silly browser rule is the only thing standing in full on chrome monoculture.

chrome is the new ie.

minusf··on Scalability is overrated

minusf··on Ask HN: Are you tired of reading ChatGPT headlines?
when a program will be smart enough to write at least as usable code as me, i'll happily hang up my keyboard and take up gardening.

until that happens what's the point of worrying? the year of the linux desktop joke got retired anyway so let's use self driving cars and "ai programmers" :)

minusf··on Diff Models – A New Way to Edit Code
there are still handmade shoes and suits. if i could afford them, i wouldnt buy mass produced stuff where i have to fit into the producers sizing chart.

a big part of me not liking windows and preferring the open source world was also not wanting to use the lowest common denominator quality operating system and applications.

handmade, handcrafted stuff will be always head and shoulders above the rest, software included.

minusf··on A History of the FFmpeg Project
out of curiosity, do you know about any project that deals with so many functionalities across so many formats, exposed mainly thru CLI and it's not hacky and leaky at places?
minusf··on Mac OS Ventura Issues
i personally agree that finder is getting worse with every release, whether major or minor. connecting an iphone is guaranteed to be a janky experience. it's a disgrace.

the icon of the volume being unmounted dissapearing too soon (thus giving the impression it's already safe to remove the device) is very real and dangerous.

the dumbing down to ios/ipad level is also quite clear i think. the preferences did not need an overhaul. perhaps it was a gesture towards microsoft windows' preferences "experience" living in this weird limbo, and apple saying we can do a full rewrite in one major release cycle. who knows.

the ventura update itself did not finish unattended, i had to login manually on both my m1's for the installer to get into the next phase.

where macos is right now, is where the mac hw was 2 years ago. management having heir hands on their ears singing lalala and ignoring what people want. perhaps they have to run it totally in the ground before improving.

i had a policy of not upgrading to .0 releases, but i am revising it to install only the last point release of the previous major release after the next major release is out.

minusf··on GNU nano is my editor of choice (2021)
most shells support both emacs shortcuts and vi style commands so there are at least 2 "standards" fwiw.
