minus1··on Women are bailing out of IT
I think we should be careful not to get too defensive over this issue. I don't think most women are bullied out of their role, but neither do I think there are gender differences that account for the full disparity between women and men in IT. If there is a way we can make the IT field more inclusive, that is a good thing.
minus1··on Women are bailing out of IT
You can skip the email request (click "No Thanks") and it starts the download for the "Women in IT: The Facts" report.

EDIT: Here's the pertinent section. They are saying they leave the field, not company, mid-career:

"In 2003, only one-third of women with a computer science bachelor’s degree were still employed in a science, engineering, or technical (SET) job two years after graduation. According to a study by the Center for Work-Life Policy, 74 percent of women in technology report “loving their work,” yet these women leave their careers at a staggering rate: 56 percent of technical women leave at the “mid-level” point just when the loss of their talent is most costly to companies. This is more than double the quit rate for men. It is also higher than the quit rate for women in science and engineering."

I'm curious about the big spike last August. Also, I wonder what caused the big page view spikes in Aug/Sept 2008?
minus1··on Winner of The Attention Contest
I might be odd, but what I find more interesting than the short article itself is comparing the Scott Adams edited version to the original. I'm a rather poor writer, so this is a concrete example of how to improve.

"I have hundreds of friends all locked into FB - a mass exodus is definitely not possible."

Replace FB with MySpace and reconsider.

How did this comment end up on The Economist?

minus1··on One page per day
I like it. Some thoughts on the design:

-Stack the controls vertically on the right. Center the "blank sheet" (to make it feel more like a sheet on a desk or typewriter).

-Cut the half-sheet from the top (it felt a little crowded to me... not sure where to place your "just start typing note, but it might be nice to fade in briefly and then out).

-Adjust the alignment on the header.

-Lighten the page outline to #AAAAAA and shrink the drop shadow to 3px.

Maybe it's too minimalist, but here's how I would imagine it:

Good luck!

minus1··on Ask HN: Posterous and existing sites?
It's pretty painless to point your Posterous site to a domain you own, or yoursite.com/blog.

Check under Settings->"I already have a custom domain name (e.g. yourdomain.com)"

I'm not sure about ads.

minus1··on C programming language back at number one position
An explanation of the strange dip in Java popularity in 2004:

Q: What happened to Java in April 2004? Did you change your methodology?

A: No, we did not change our methodology at that time. Google changed its methodology. They performed a general sweep action to get rid of all kinds of web sites that had been pushed up. As a consequence, there was a huge drop for languages such as Java and C++. In order to minimize such fluctuations in the future, we added two more search engines (MSN and Yahoo) a few months after this incident.

I was thinking something like this that maintains a column format.

minus1··on Facebook has acquired Divvyshot (YC W09)
From TechCrunch: "The amount of the acquisition is not being disclosed, but it was likely small. Buying Divvyshot is a talent acquisition for Facebook."
minus1··on How Real are the Defects in Toyota's Cars?
I agree. I should clarify that the data reviewed should be limited to before the story broke.
minus1··on How Real are the Defects in Toyota's Cars?
What we're missing here (and in all of the Toyota articles I've seen recently) is a comparison to the number of 'sudden acceleration' incidents reported in non-Toyota vehicles. If this is simply elderly-operator error, I would expect the Lincoln Town Car to have a far worse record.
minus1··on Insurgents Hack U.S. Drones
I agree that the transmission should be encrypted, but I think the usefulness of the video feed to insurgents is overstated. You can hear and see the drones overhead, so it is pretty clear if your area is under surveillance.
minus1··on The Final Numbers on ‘Clunkers’
Here's the breakdown by manufacturer from the DOT press release:

  New Vehicles Manufacturers

  Nissan - 8.7%
  Hyundai - 7.2%
  Chrysler - 6.6%
  Kia - 4.3%
  Subaru - 2.5%
  Mazda - 2.4%
  Volkswagen - 2.0%
  Suzuki - 0.6%
  Mitsubishi - 0.5%

  Smart - 0.2%
  Volvo - 0.1%
  All Other - <0.1%
minus1··on Poll: What OS do you use everyday, or most often?
It's certainly possible, but I don't think it can account for the full difference. Hopefully PG will provide some recent server stats.
minus1··on Poll: What OS do you use everyday, or most often?
Thanks for the information. These numbers seem more plausible given my own anecdotal evidence. Now compare this to the poll percentages:

  21.37% Windows (199)
  40.28% Mac (375)
  35.12% Linux (327)
My conclusion is that a Linux user is far more motivated than a Mac or Windows user to respond to this poll, making the results interesting, but not accurate.
minus1··on Poll: What OS do you use everyday, or most often?
I assume this type of poll is self-selecting and that Windows is greatly underrepresented. In a 2005 article, PG states that the ycombinator visitor OS breakdown is as follows: Windows 66.4%, Macintosh 18.8%, Linux 11.4%, and FreeBSD 1.5%

I would love to see the current OS breakdown from ycombinator logs to compare. Anyone?

minus1··on On Hacking - Richard Stallman
Language may work that way, but RMS is not likely to concede the point. Thus his continuing battle over "GNU/Linux". He's a principled man, perhaps to a fault.
minus1··on Failure must always be an option
While I believe this article is a fascinating look at the bureaucracy at JPL, it is analogous to the mortgage crisis only in that it is an example of perverse incentives. Perverse incentives exist all around us, so I don't find this example particularly enlightening.

minus1··on My experiment with smart drugs: Viagra for the brain?
Adrafinil is a similar, but unregulated drug. Legal in the US without a prescription.

So, if you're planning on experimenting, at least avoid a felony charge.

minus1··on Paint.NET gets ripped off - Freeware Authors: Beware of "Backspaceware"
The author does not seem to appreciate the consequences of using the MIT License. I don't think he should be using any type of OSS license if he only intends to release his source as a reference.
