minton··on Tom Lesley has published 40 books in 2023, all with 100% positive reviews
It seems like the title should mention that these books were largely written by ChatGPT or some other LLM.
minton··on Bullet Train – Rails-based SaaS framework
I’ve only heard good things about tailwind. Did you have a bad experience with it?
minton··on Lego breaks ground on first US manufacturing facility
I’m so confused by Lego’s market share. They sell cheap plastic at insane premiums. Why is there not more competition?
minton··on Lego breaks ground on first US manufacturing facility
As of July 2015, 600 billion Lego parts had been produced.[1]

minton··on Infinite Games
Kevin Hart describes this perfectly as the “Can’t Go Backwards” monster in his book Monsters and How to Tame Them[0]. Definitely worth a listen.

Can’t wait for all the calls for help from my parents and friends. It’ll be just like the good old days.

minton··on EU will require Apple to open up iMessage (2022)
It sounds like you might be happier in Android land. You can load whatever apps you want and even some you don’t[1].

minton··on Linux 6.2: The first mainstream Linux kernel for Apple M1 chips arrives
Are you dual booting your M1?
minton··on Transmission v4.0
Honest question. What kinds of things are people using torrents for in 2023?
minton··on Ask HN: Is it just me or is 5G strictly worse than LTE?
I live in a rural area (not a single Starbucks in the county), and in 50% of the town, my phone has 5GUW coverage. I can download apps, playlists, and movies quickly. I recently downloaded UPBGE (430MB) on my iPhone in only a few minutes. This wasn’t possible on LTE and is worth the extra $10 for me.
minton··on Show HN: Git Heat Map – a tool for visualising git repo activity for each file
I’d never heard of WakaTime before. Their Team Leader board looks like a dystopian nightmare.
minton··on How Equifax Became a Private IRS
I think people underestimate the importance of physical cash. It’s annoying, sure, but it affords a type of freedom that won’t be replaced once lost. I wish more people understood this. Sadly, most people seem willing to trade a tiny bit of convenience today for a worse future tomorrow—for example, the tipless, cash-only coffee shop on the HN front page. I guess, like smokers, people don’t believe there’ll be consequences until it’s too late.
minton··on My Youtube earnings
This seems to be the case for a lot of words these days.
minton··on On Twitch, you can never log off
A friend wants to start a channel. My instinct was that’s a very long shot (pointless even), but I told them I’d help if I could. Any advice for starting on YouTube?
minton··on Endocrine disruptors: Are they a ticking time bomb?
“Shut off your computer and mobile phone at night (or at least put it to sleep / on airplane mode), because their hard drives contain flame retardants which release harmful products during operation”

I have never heard of this, and the article doesn’t offer citations. Is this a thing?

minton··on YouTube age-restriction quagmire exposed by 78-minute Mega Man documentary
I use this and it’s better than nothing. I’m hoping for a day when AI is powerful enough to filter these out not by skipping them but by altering them. Subbing in family-friendly alternatives for curse words and maybe blurring or clothing the nudity. Obviously some scene will still need to be skipped entirely.
minton··on Analysis of Apple Watch running data
> For me an average pace of 3:52 is great, while 4:12 is very bad.

Um, that’s very fast. At my pace (8:45 or 5:26 in km), I barely notice the discrepancies on my Apple Watch 7.

minton··on Plastic might be making us obese
I found the Yuka app makes this much easier. Just scan the UPC and it’ll show you a x/100 score. I use it for nearly everything.

minton··on Stable Diffusion launch announcement
It's great that the code is open source. However, the magic is in the models. I wouldn't be so sure that model access won't have the same restrictions as OpenAI.

From the repo:

"To prevent misuse and harm, we currently provide access to the checkpoints only for academic research purposes upon request. This is an experiment in safe and community-driven publication of a capable and general text-to-image model. We are working on a public release with a more permissive license that also incorporates ethical considerations."

There is also the ruby version: `ruby -run -ehttpd . -p8000`
minton··on Home Assistant OS Release 8
I want to want this, but I have never found a use case that made it seem worth it.
minton··on EU Commission is planning automatic CSAM scanning of private communications
I don’t think Macs have any built in ability to report CSAM.
minton··on South Africa is running out of Marmite
Kiwi lemonade?
minton··on Twitter is adding an edit button
Of course the work has nothing to do with Elon. However, it does seem like he lit a fire under them to get it done.
minton··on YouTube cancelled my Nextcloud installation how-to
I appreciate the occasional reminder that I can’t rely on having access to these services and need to keep local copies of important data.
minton··on MaskerAid iOS App
It seems like a significant investment to spend six months developing an iOS app solo, knowing it will likely be cloned and copied within a month.
minton··on Earn-IT threatens encryption and therefore user freedom
I don’t know if that’s entirely true. There are politicians against the second amendment but yet they have armed security guards.
minton··on Car dealerships don’t want cash, they want to give loans
I experienced the same tactic at Jenkins Acura in Ocala, Florida. Very shady. Funny enough, the sales guy was also apologetic for his manager. I walked out, but what a waste of everyone's time.
minton··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
I have considered moving to iCloud as well. How do you find the UX? It has been a decade+ since I used the Mail app but I don’t have fond memories.
minton··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
Thanks. I have never heard that term. At my company, we’d just call that a programmer/developer/engineer.
