But in the long run knowing all that makes it easier. We could have some GUI for doing all those things but it would end up being a massive mess of buttons EVERYWHERE and endless menus. And maybe a nice wizard could be designed for the given example that you could check the boxes as you go and it would be easy to figure out the first time. But after 5 years of doing this same thing do you want to spend 2 minutes clicking through a wizard every time or do you want to have spent a little time learning some cryptic commands a couple years back and now you can type it out in 20 seconds. I think the point is that most programming tools aren’t made to be easy to use the first time. They’re made so that the 100th or 1000th time it’s fast even if every time it’s been a little different.

I think the comment you are replying to is saying that the area the cops let those people into was either already over run and they were moving to a different place to keep people out. Or that it was area the people were allowed to be in, hence the other non cops in the area and so it’s not a problem that they were let it. Not that the cops were just abandoning there job and letting people into an area they shouldn’t have.

I’d say faith can be belief in anything you haven’t seen yourself, including thing done through scientific methods. I have to have faith in scientist that they know what they are doing and correctly reported their results and in the committees that review them.

I think our whole culture has developed a massive victim complex in recent years. It seems like every group is trying to point to how they are oppressed (some more rightfully than others) and almost glorifying it in this weird way I can’t quite put a finger on.

What came to mind when I read this news about Capitol Hill was the famous MLK quote “A riot is the language of the unheard.” Along with the thought that these a mostly middle class white people no doubt. Which are overall a privileged group. So I got to thinking about what it means to be heard in today’s world. I think that for a lot of conservatives in a digital world it can feel like their voice or the voice of people with their beliefs aren’t heard. Certainly you can find little echo chambers of conservatism, but when you go to the big news sites, the front page of Reddit, or Twitter it sure looks like everyone leans left. Couple this with the leader of your movement getting little notes on all his tweets to at what he says isn’t true or getting removed. I can see how it feels like your worldview is getting silenced, hence a riot. So I wonder if these movements by Twitter are ultimately counter productive.

Just a half baked idea, but some food for thought.

Pretty much all governments have a history of maliciousness and/or incompetence. Well I think it unlikely they would allow it. It is certainly in the realm of possible scenarios.

If no matter what they will not stop their bad behavior then depending on how serious it is they cannot be allowed to keep being a part of the community.

People argue that increases in death could also be attributed to suicide, deteriorating health from mental hardship of stress and quarantine, and people not seeking medical treatment they need because they are scared of covid or because they cannot afford it with so much unemployment.

I think the last one holds some water. I know of one person in my hometown who chose not to go to the hospital because he was scared of covid and ended up dying of a heart attack.

Probably why every tech company told me every day for the last 6 months to vote. I think the thing I’m most excited about with this election is to stop being bombarded by every site to vote!

I think it may be different if you are philosophically opposed to the themes the author is trying to convey. My views do somewhat align with CS Lewis so I am biased. But the reason I specifically mentioned him is because he has many overtly Christian themes he actively portrays in his novels but I never feel like he is banging me over the head with obvious allegories. His novels are not overly complex but have much depth in terms of the characters and the people and themes they portray. Narnia is an obvious exception, but it is a childrens book. I am currently reading Till We Have Faces and would highly recommend it. It has a Christ like figure, but the more interesting part of it is the exploration of relationship and love.

With Dostoevsky I do not know if he really set out to convey a specific philosophical truth or not. To me his novels seem more of an exploration of human suffering and what living in his day was like. But I am not Dostoevsky scholar.

Tolkien may be a better example. You can easily read Lord of the Rings without picking up any Christian symbolism.

I think some truly excellent authors can start novels with themes in mind and still have a great book at the end. I am thinking C.S. Lewis specifically. Many of his works he knew the philosophical themes that would be present before writing them, but none of the come off as preachy (though some of his children books are basic) because they are such good stories.

On the whole though I do think a lot of discovery and learning takes place well writing. Though I have never written a novel so I do not really know.

A simple google search will bring up hundreds of articles linking alcohol consumption during pregnancy to birth defects. It is a well established relationship.

In the US we even have warnings on all alcoholic beverages that say pregnant women should not drink alcohol.

I think we have to hold scientists to higher standards for code quality because it has a direct impact on the findings of their results. How many off by one or other subtle errors that are found later in testing have most software engineers written in their career? Is it fine to just say eh, scientific results can be off by one because the standards should be lower?
