I did this recently for fun, including the bootloader (I considered GRUB cheating!) The best tutorial IMO was https://samypesse.gitbook.io/how-to-create-an-operating-syst...
Some other useful resources I found:

Economic pressure alone is sufficient to create severe emotional stress and instability (which probably creates a feedback loop that makes it even harder to recover from).
I was already intimately familiar with many of the artists featured (Aphex twin, oneohtrix point never, tim hecker) but have definitely discovered some new ones through it too.
Redux and Flow are somehow branded as alternatives to MVC, when they are precisely MVC (store=model, dispatcher/reducer=controller, etc). It seems that Facebook (and many others) implemented MVC very poorly and pretended to abandon it instead of admitting they just did it better on the next attempt.
If anything, the success of redux simply reinforces the fact that MVC is a very useful pattern for UI applications. But, it bothers me that newer developers might be persuaded by the anti-MVC branding.
Overall it sounds like your experiences were much more positive than mine, though.
