mindentropy··on Ask HN: Was anyone working at Apple during Steve Jobs' return in 1997?
It is not snobbery and you are taking it the wrong way.

It is more about having plenty of mature developer tools at your finger tips to get the job done with lots of automation. Also having source of everything allows you to check how something is architected and designed and also improves your own code.

It is very painful to work on Windows laptops when you don't have access to proper dev tools which is the case in most of the corporate setups where they want to uniformity of images to make administration easy.

mindentropy··on Ask HN: Was anyone working at Apple during Steve Jobs' return in 1997?
Exactly. It is painful in Windows 10. Nothing beats running natively.
mindentropy··on Ask HN: Was anyone working at Apple during Steve Jobs' return in 1997?
WSL in Windows 10 is almost useless. Also for embedded and people working on kernels etc it is really painful.

Do you have some dirt on the Infineon - Cypress deal? I am not very confident with how Cypress was doing.

>I didn’t grow up around anyone particularly handy

I grew up in a similar household. Fortunately I was the handyman for my family. I never had tools but I used to improvise. I also used to fix some of my hot wheel toy cars and I longed for a soldering iron and pliers.

Now I really wished I could learn in a more formal way on how to repair and maintain things. I have severe anxiety dealing with people and the attitude and workmanship of some of the repairmen makes my anxiety worse.

My colleague in Germany showed his in-law's house and he said that his father in-law built the whole house by himself. Is this something common in Western Europe and especially Germany? I was very impressed as this is something very rare in my country.

How are K&N filters compared to the stock filters? I am thinking of changing my stock filter to K&N filters but I have a lot of hesitation on how long it will last.
mindentropy··on The Disappearing Art of Maintenance
I love maintenance and salvage videos. It is so addictive especially machines and electronics. I would recommend Diesel Creek videos ( https://www.youtube.com/c/DieselCreek ) which is really fun. I am in awe at some of the old American diesel machines and how resilient they are.
mindentropy··on Ask HN: Name 3-5 books that had the most impact on your career and knowledge?
>Carnegie opened my eyes to how to communicate productively, but it’s also a really manipulative way of being.

I find it odd that people keep raving about this book. As you said it is a very manipulative and exploitative way. It is ok if you are just aiming for getting what you want. Instead I find Robert Green's books which callout and does not sugar coat anything.

mindentropy··on Will young Americans want to work in semiconductor manufacturing? [video]
When I see videos of Ben Mallah on Youtube with juicy contracts on maintaining his properties, it is fantastic for people who are in the trades. A talented person can easily graduate to earning a firm.
mindentropy··on Ask HN: How to Finish Projects?
>only losers do not finish work they started.

Is this really true? In life I noticed that many things are counter intuitive. I have seen people who work hard to finish something don't get good opportunities as they are always busy and the opportunities goes to someone who is free currently.

mindentropy··on Email doesn't suck – it's email clients that need improving
What about sending meeting invites via email?
mindentropy··on Ask HN: Chip startups?
I had worked on their Hyperspectral imaging sensors providing surrounding support (Dev kit + SW stack). It is definitely cool and has a lot of applications especially for detection of adulteration in food etc.

What is different between Credo's PHY versus something like a Broadcom PHY?
mindentropy··on Ask HN: Chip startups?
Why doesn't the website say anything about the product? It is just an infinite symbol.
mindentropy··on Ask HN: Chip startups?
Have you checked out IMEC and their imaging sensors? They have fantastic technology and are open to spinoffs and funding.

Calendaring is very much important. How will I schedule meetings? Meetings, appointments are the most important things in business these days.

Does the Thunderbird calendar work as good as outlook for you? Does calendar invites and other communication programs have good integration with Thunderbird?

Seriously, I would love to learn his networking skills. With all that trust and funding this guy is set.

For Gvim my go to is Inconsolata font with white background. Similar case with the console.

Dark mode for some reason is very difficult for me and gives me a headache after sometime or makes my head heavy. It is strange because previously I used to use dark mode without any issues and was preferred. Later I switched to lighter/white background with dark foreground.

mindentropy··on WeWork's former CEO has a new startup, reportedly valued at more than $1B
>I can’t believe this degenerate can start billion dollar companies left and right

Don't know how he manages to raise money. Who in his connections would risk such huge investments? Is it some kind of money laundering or something?

>Once you realize you only work for (aka being bribed by) BigCo to snuff out their competition it pretty much removes the guilt of not working.

Yes. Exactly. There is no real innovation. All that I see nowadays is corporate drama of passing the blame around, climbing the ladder with politics and all the wrong people put in interesting and important positions. There are a lot of cult like people who take pride in this fake drama and I am definitely not one.

All I want now is to retire with a good enough corpus by coasting so that I have enough to work on my personal projects, eat healthy, sleep well coupled with some sports and exercise.

A quick question as it very hard to get an answer back on this. Does Google ask leetcode stuff for firmware and kernel engineers too?
mindentropy··on Productivity porn
I used to do that and it has helped me quite a bit. Now I know what distro's are good and I can bring up embedded systems much faster and what needs to be packaged.

I also have to have a particular font and color or it would be difficult to focus. Not sure why. Also if I use dark mode I start getting a headache. Not able to figure why it is so.

As an Indian I loved my afternoon sleep during the holidays. During school days I would come home and sleep for an hour while reading something. I really loved my sleep. When I started work I hated that my sleep was reduced drastically. Sleeping late working on personal projects played havoc on my sleep. Now in WFH I sleep for an hour or more in the evening which would have been wasted commuting.

I have seen my cognitive skills decrease because of lack of sleep. Now I am just chilling and catching up with rest and chilling and don't give a crap about work or projects.

> We have hundreds if not thousands of very talented (not me) engineers who work on low-level firmware, drivers, kernel, performance optimization, etc on Linux.

I am interested in working on this. Do you know if there positions open and where and which group to apply?

Could you expand on this? I am interested to know what were his opinions.

mindentropy··on Hacker Lab Is Closing
Hmm. I am more interested in the Maker/DIY culture. Somehow in India we have lost all of this and even if we have, it is pushed to some grungy areas of the city where it is mainly chop shops and scrap dealing.

I still remember in the 1980's and 90's when I was a kid where we had a lot of repair shops especially for TV and radio/transistors. It was back when things were costly and people used to repair stuff. Now people don't have the skills to repair any more.

mindentropy··on Hacker Lab Is Closing
Yes.That objective is totally crazy and I wonder why no one is criticizing it. Crazy stuff.
mindentropy··on Hacker Lab Is Closing
I would pay for a membership if it is somewhere closer to my house and is clean. Most of the time I see labs very disorganized and is hogged by the know it alls.
