formerly in tech (various roles), early retired, still loves tech; hates nonsense; political orphan; neurodivergent, trying to adapt stoicism in a world gone insane.

Key philosophy about tech: "A two-bladed sword is neither inherently evil nor good; its moral alignment depends entirely on how it is used and by whom"

mindcrash··on Slack has raised our charges by $195k per year
Have you talked to a rep from Mattermost or Zulip yet?
mindcrash··on Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford tells Borderlands 4 critics: "code your own engine"
I can play Borderlands 3 pretty decently on a i7 7820 based laptop with Geforce 1070 graphics.

Borderlands 4 on the other hand...

By the way, blame Unreal 5. Every Unreal 5 game released recently runs like utter crap unless you have luck, godlike hardware or both.

mindcrash··on 400M PCs cannot upgrade to Windows 11
It's basically Arch and a fully customized ready to go Hyprland setup (which is a fully customizable/programmable DE running on top of Wayland).

I would recommend just installing Arch, Hyprland and customize what you need yourselves so you aren't stuck using DHHs preferences.

Bonus: Along the way you will also figure out how he did it, like creating your very own application launcher with some scripting and https://github.com/abenz1267/walker

(I am in the process of exactly doing that)

mindcrash··on Jeena's Hyprland Demo
> maybe in part due to DHH promoting it a bit

Try PewDiePie. around 6.7M people now know something like Linux and Hyprland exists, and that in 2025 it might even work better than MacOS or Windows and whatever desktop environments on Linux came before.

mindcrash··on Trump to Sign Order Renaming the Defense Department as the Department of War
Global West versus Global East, the definitive war to end all wars, World War III.

So given that little bit of context renaming the DoD makes a lot of sense.

mindcrash··on Anduril's product engineering machine
"The Amusement Park for Engineers"

A company which needs you to build things to kill anyone and everyone with AI. BIG FUN! /s

But maybe I am the only one who thinks this is just SICK.

mindcrash··on [dead]
They should at least provide a meta tag or response header with noindex on those pages to prevent shit like this:

https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/...

If they didn't BB did create a privacy leak, because in that case all those pages could be potentially indexed by GoogleBot or anyone else, and you should create some more noise in their direction.

mindcrash··on GitHub is no longer independent at Microsoft after CEO resignation
Or even better, claim full sovereignty (again) and install Forgejo (https://forgejo.org/) on your own hardware.

You'll get the same experience as Codeberg, because Codeberg is in fact running on Forgejo

mindcrash··on Trello: How the project management app's update is causing customers to revolt
"The past year of headlines might suggest that jerking users around with unwanted new features is the domain of a select few companies pushing a specific sort of tech. It turns out tech businesses in a much lighter weight class can do it too."

1. I wouldn't call Atlassian exactly lightweight.

2. You can build a whole well-paid career around making one of their other "fantastic" products, Jira, actually work in a productive way

mindcrash··on YouTube to be included in Australia's social media ban for children under 16
I know that it doesn't matter at all. Just like the Left or Right here in Europe.

But Trump is the current US president isn't he?

mindcrash··on YouTube to be included in Australia's social media ban for children under 16
> Lots of people keep mentioning these conspiracy theories but I still don't buy it.

EU is actively working on "age verification" through a digital wallet.

Once that is in place it is a small step to wall off the entire Internet unless you verify yourself through your digital ID.

Since Trump is as borderline fascist as von der Leyen there's no fucking doubt in my mind the United States will follow the EU as soon as there are signs of success or even earlier.

Proof: https://github.com/eu-digital-identity-wallet/av-doc-technic...

Especially note "The objective is to develop an EU-wide solution to age verification that reinforces the Digital Services Act (DSA) objective to ensure safe, secure, and trusted digital space and the Louvain-la-Neuve Declaration, which promotes a safer and more trustworthy online environment."

Whenever those in power talk about "security", "safety" and "trust" they talk about other things entirely which, for the larger public, have nothing to do with these topics at all.

mindcrash··on Keep Pydantic out of your Domain Layer
And that's why it is key in your architecture to differentiate between Data Transfer Objects (DTOs) or Models on one hand which has values which can and actually must be validated when they come from the outside, and Domain Entities / Value Objects on the other. Even though the DTO and Domain Entity might look similar.

Thank me later.

mindcrash··on Ask HN: Help me navigate a PIP at a remote startup in the Netherlands
If the company has put you on a PIP or something similar, is located in the Netherlands, and it looks like they want you gone you're definitely out.

Trust me on that.

Been there, done that. Several times. Luckily I don't have to go through that kind of crap any longer.

mindcrash··on Trump Aides Discussed Ending Some SpaceX Contracts, but Found Most Were Vital
To start with SpaceX as of yet has proven to be the only commercial space flight org reliably able to move personnel and cargo to ISS.

Boeing tried, and we all know what happened next.

mindcrash··on I extracted the safety filters from Apple Intelligence models
So far I've found Adobe Firefly, Llama, ChatGPT, Claude and Claude AI are considered naughty words. There's probably more in the list, though.

What the actual fuck? Censorship much?

mindcrash··on Telefónica DE shifts VMware support to Spinnaker due to cost
> Assuming the "spinnaker" it talks about is https://spinnaker.io/ how does it translate the move from virtualization to deployment?

VMware does _a lot_ more than just virtualization these days. This most likely has something to do with Tanzu Platform for Cloud Foundry or just Tanzu, which does provide CI/CD services.

Which they likely migrated to Spinnaker and vanilla Kubernetes.

mindcrash··on The hunt for a perfect laptop continues
I've heard that a lot of people who made the switch to Linux lately really like the Framework Laptop 13* laptop. DHH is one of them.

As a plus if you know your way around hardware the whole thing can be disassembled and upgraded, you can even buy it as a DIY package if you want.

It's pretty high on my wishlist as a system for non-gaming purposes because I don't really think the integrated GPU in the Ryzen AI HX 370 can cope with that very well. But Linux and Wayland should run terrific on it.

What do you guys think?

mindcrash··on Pixel 6a gets a mandatory Android update next week with battery reduction
I recently had to scrub my former employers S21 to send it back and evidently I have to say Samsung doesn't really do this anymore, at least not in the EU.

You are greeted with a screen with all the crap it wants to install after turning on the phone for the first time (which you can fully skip) and that's it. A One UI 7/8 setup can be pretty bare bones and minimalistic if you want, at least here in the EU.

mindcrash··on I could not convince my k8s team to go AWS serverless
Depending on your workload K8S on Fargate can get your CFO super annoyed before you can say "Kubernetes".

Trust me, I've been there with compute bills up to 8000 EUR a month.

If you have light, finite (so not things that run 24/7) workloads Fargate might be worth exploring, in any other case classic VMs (with addition of Spot machine if you want cheap extra compute) is still the way to go.

In my humble opinion.

mindcrash··on I just don't care about the Steam Deck 2 anymore
Steam Deck, hardwarewise, doesn't even really matter that much to Valve anyway. It's all about the universal deployment of Steam through Linux and Windows and the amount of money that will potentially rake in.

Right now Microsoft, through the Xbox Play Anywhere strategy, and Sony, to a certain degree*, but especially Microsoft is _exactly_ doing what Valve wants and supporting Valve in what they want: get Steam deployed in as many households as possible in as many form factors as possible.

It never was about the hardware, but all about the service. You'll see.

*) By allowing previously Playstation exclusives onto Steam, which means that when you have a Steam compatible device you can play all the Xbox, Playstation and PC games you want. As an example, Stellar Blade -one of the best selling Playstation exclusives last year- will be released on Steam in a few days.

mindcrash··on PS5 shooter goes from 5 players to bestseller after devs defend game

Now more than ever.

mindcrash··on Why Cline doesn't index your codebase

mindcrash··on Toshiba says Europe doesn't need 24TB HDDs, witholds beefy models from region
Taking a quick glance across storage reviews on one of the best visited IT related sites in my EU based country I've noticed Toshiba drives aren't that well received in comparison with widely available drives from Seagate and WD which soon will have models with storage capacity up to 26 (!) TB.

That likely has something to do with it too...

mindcrash··on Ask HN: How do you store the knowledge gained in a day?
There's a entire book out there about this particular subject called "Building a Second Brain", written by Tiago Forte.

https://www.buildingasecondbrain.com/

I've read it and it's pretty good. Maybe you should give it a try as well.

mindcrash··on Nintendo warns that it can brick Switch consoles if it detects hacking, piracy
They already did that with the 3DS onwards.

For example, if you had a flash card in your 3DS and a new firmware update detected it Nintendo would happily brick the 3DS:

mindcrash··on Microsoft Teams will soon block screen capture during meetings
That's quite unfortunate because due to a screen capture through Snipping Tool I got evidence of my org planning to fire me before even making announcements through a shared PowerPoint deck with a slide containing a org chart which shouldn't really be there at the time in the Teams meeting.

So from a employee POV it has its uses.

But people who will get in the same situation like me could simply use the camera on their phone pointed at the screen and be done with it, I guess.

mindcrash··on PlainBudget – Minimalist Plain Text Budgeting
Pity this doesn't follow the PTA (Plain Text Accounting) "standard" but invented its own DSL.

https://plaintextaccounting.org/

Especially because there is a wide range of apps, ranging from CLI to web and even mobile, which can be used for PTA and due to the fact that they acknowledge the same standard are interoperable:

https://plaintextaccounting.org/#software

The most well known ones being

- hledger (https://hledger.org/),

- beancount (https://beancount.github.io/),

and

- ledger (https://ledger-cli.org/)

Important note: All free and open source

mindcrash··on Microservices are a tax your startup probably can't afford
I know about a org with ~2-3 devs who decided microservices would be cool. I warned not to go that way because they would surely face delivery and other issues which they wouldn't have when building the solution based on a architecture archetype which could be a better fit for the team and solution, which I evidently decided should be a modular monolith. (the codebase at that point was already a monolith, in fact, but had a large amount of tech debt due to the breakneck speed in which features needed to be released)

They ignored me and went the microservices way.

Guess what?

2 years later the rebuild of the old codebase was done.

3 years later and they are still fighting delivery and other issues they would never have had if they didn't ignore me and just went for the "lame" monolith.

Moral of this short story: I can personally say everything this article says is pretty much true.

mindcrash··on Tariffs Killed Arduboy
If you think tariffs only affect small manufacturers, just wait until the accumulated machine spares and parts stock of the local major ones run out.

I can tell you, up close and personal, that the COVID era already was pretty f.cking nasty for all manufacturers with costs booming thanks to supply chain issues.

Trumps tariffs bullshit is the COVID era on steroids. Seriously. Just wait and see.

mindcrash··on RybbitL Open source Google Analytics replacement
Once upon a time we did analytics and error analysis by running shell scripts executing awk, sed and grep over a apache or nginx access log or error log.

What I am trying to say is that you can still do analytics, even pretty advanced stuff with some more elaborate scripting, if you want. The only thing you need is the access log.

Something which has been largely forgotten ever since tools like Urchin became a thing :)
