formerly in tech (various roles), early retired, still loves tech; hates nonsense; political orphan; neurodivergent, trying to adapt stoicism in a world gone insane.

Key philosophy about tech: "A two-bladed sword is neither inherently evil nor good; its moral alignment depends entirely on how it is used and by whom"

I think your market would open up and grow spectacularly if you could make a version of this for Linux (and possibly BSD). OpenSwiftUI might be a great start for research.

Good luck!

mindcrash··on YouTube Removes Windows 11 Bypass Tutorials, Claims 'Risk of Physical Harm'
Once the masses discover that KDE is just as user friendly as Windows these days, ...

... oof

mindcrash··on OSS Alternative to Open WebUI – ChatGPT-Like UI, API and CLI
That might still be an option, all code before a license change falls under the license at that time.

A new license legally becomes active once it has been made public (i.e. it is committed to the source tree) and is not retroactive (for legal reasons).

And because of this, unless the owner/maintainer is willing to nuke a huge chunk of the history within their public repository (with all repercussions which might come with it) it is still possible to make a safe fork of a open source / open core product suddenly moving into a different direction. Time travel to the point before the new license was added to the repository, and fork from that point in time.

The owner/maintainer involved might absolutely not like that but legally they have no choice to allow it, given the license and its permissions at that particular moment in time in the repo.

mindcrash··on This Month in Ladybird – October 2025
True open source web browsers on Windows, and MacOS, are dead in the water.

This is because of the lack of Widevine CDM, and the majority of people wanting to stream stuff using services like Tidal, Netflix and Spotify.

They will also want to use a single browser for everything, which in practice means Edge, Chrome, Firefox or Safari.

Ladybird will very likely not have access to Widevine, because of the cost, requirements, and Google as gatekeeper. Some developers of small opensource Chromium/Electron based browsers also earlier tried and Google simply said no.

And even if they have reverse engineered the CDM extension (which will make Widevine work, not unlike a small hack/workaround with regard to Chromium and Chromium forks) it will not work because all browsers using Widevine on those two platforms require something called VMP (Verified Media Path) which is, as far as I understand, a certificate and verification library supplied by Widevine embedded within the browser.

Without VMP embedded in the browser streaming from popular commercial providers such as Netflix will not work on Windows and MacOS, even when the Widevine extension is in fact active.

Believe me, I checked.

IMO all of this is not only set in motion to (try to) protect from piracy, but also to kill any serious competition from small parties like LadyBird, and to keep the browser market firmly in the hands of the likes of Microsoft, Apple and Google. Because who will use a browser in 2025 unable to stream content, or without hacks at 720p maximum? (looking at you, Brave and Netflix)

This also means that browsers like Brave, Vivaldi and Firefox are in fact not true opensource browsers because their respective public repositories do not contain the assets needed for VMP signing.

On another note, at this moment the majority of people should be glad that browsers with corporate backing and enough income like Brave (whatever you might think of Brendan Eich's ideas), Vivaldi and Firefox exist because without them you would have no serious choice on Windows or MacOS at all.

mindcrash··on Nearly 90% of Windows Games Now Run on Linux
In case you don't own a Steam Deck and would like to see how much of your library would run on Linux:

1. Go to your library

2. Click the filter button

3. Under "hardware support" you'll see a dropdown "Steam Deck" with 4 options, here's some explanation what they mean:

Verified - Means this game 100% works on Linux (and Deck), which is verified by Valve

Playable - Means this game works on Linux (and Deck) but it might have some tiny issues (e.g. font size)

Untested - Might work, but not tested

So to check if your games would run pretty nicely either filter on "Verified" games or "Verified or playable" games and it filters out everything which will or might not run at all.

You'll be surprised how much games can run on Linux these days -- thanks to the massive effort Valve puts in Proton and some devs (including Valve) publishing native Linux builds of their games on Steam, and even things you might not even consider at all like Skyrim or Oblivion with all your favorite mods (!)

mindcrash··on Omarchy 3.1.0
Technically they are using (abusing?) a container containing Windows 11.

https://github.com/basecamp/omarchy/blob/master/bin/omarchy-...

The container they spin up: https://github.com/dockur/windows

And vanilla Arch is still in play, the only thing they do is a shit ton of configuration so you don't have to do it yourself. Basically dotfiles but on steroids.

It's also great for some inspiration if you want to do some ricing yourself.

mindcrash··on Carefully Educated to Be Idiots
George Carlin said it best way back in 2005:

"[...]THEY’VE GOT YOU BY THE BALLS! They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying, lobbying to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else. But I’ll tell you what they don’t want.

They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well-informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them. That’s against their interest.

That’s right.

They don’t want people who are smart enough to sit around the kitchen table and figure out how badly they’re getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago.

They don’t want that.

You know what they want?

They want OBEDIENT WORKERS. OBEDIENT WORKERS. People who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork and just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shittier jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and the vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it.[...]"

mindcrash··on Ask HN: What are people doing to get off of VMware?
Happily want to give some options:

* DIY w/ KVM/Xen

* DIY w/ OpenStack - https://www.openstack.org/

* ProxMox - https://www.proxmox.com/en/

* Paid OpenStack through one of their partners - https://www.openstack.org/marketplace/consulting/

* OpenNebula - https://opennebula.io/

* Nutanix - https://www.nutanix.com/

If you want a solution that "just works", is simple to manage and can even extend to public cloud infrastructure when needed I can really, really recommend Nutanix. Migrating from VMWare is also really simple, they have a tool which makes that very easy. Do note that they use a heavily modified KVM as hypervisor.

> Do you mean awesomekling? Why is he considered a fascist?

I hope you can see this because my posts in this thread are getting attacked and downvoted.

This pretty much summarizes how it started (copied from Google):

https://lunduke.locals.com/post/5823666/ladybird-web-browser...

(note that while the exact word never is seen in evidence added to this post but it sure is or hinted towards elsewhere.)

and evidenced by this its ongoing:

because some people disagree with things like this:

https://xcancel.com/awesomekling/status/1966456391146606806

And there are tons more posts that show that some people are not exactly nice towards him on his X timeline.

Also there's direct proof of these accusations out there but I will not link to those out of professional courtesy for those involved (yes, some people still have that).

mindcrash··on Ron Conway skewers Marc Benioff in board resignation after 25 years
Indeed, like I tried to explain earlier. This is just the deployment phase, execution follows after they find some loophole to invoke the Insurrection Act. And then things will turn very ugly very fast for many -- which you can clearly see if you recognize the patterns.
mindcrash··on Ron Conway skewers Marc Benioff in board resignation after 25 years
Trump is currently exploring how (not "if") he can activate the US Insurrection Act of 1807. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insurrection_Act_of_1807) and he wants to do it as quickly as possible.

https://www.msnbc.com/news/news-analysis/trump-national-guar...

If he does he can (and will) federalize all National Guard units so they in fact become "federal troops" and this can (and will) allow his "own" federal military through Hegseth to deploy and operate domestically. Additionally he can declare a portion of the US population "insurrectionists" and act upon it, without interference of local law enforcement and government (and the risk of also labeled the same if they do).

As a European with quite some knowledge about European history hopefully I do not have to take a history book and explain the repercussions of Trump doing this?

mindcrash··on Ruby core team takes ownership of RubyGems and Bundler
If only the drama stopped there:

* DHH is not only considered racist / fascist due to some blog posts, but also for making Hyprland the default DE in Omarchy, developed by someone who goes by the name Vaxry Vaxerski, who is also considered fascist and racist, and thus banned from contributing to freedesktop projects due to supposed breach of CoC:

https://blog.vaxry.net/articles/2024-fdo-and-redhat

* Hyprland and all its contributors are now also considered fascist from taking sponsorship money from 37signals, DHH's company, due to it being an important part of Omarchy.

https://account.hypr.land/sponsors

* Due to the fact that both DHH and Vaxry are both considered fascist / racist, Framework and its CEO (yes, that Framework) are now considered to be supporters of fascism, because Framework is sponsoring and supporting both Omarchy and Hyprland.

https://account.hypr.land/sponsors

* Cloudflare (yes, that Cloudflare) is considered to support fascism because they support Omarchy and the Ladybird webbrowser (which is a project also run by someone considered to be a fascist)

https://blog.cloudflare.com/supporting-the-future-of-the-ope...

* Last but not least, Tobi (Shopify CEO) and thus Shopify are also considered by many to be supporters of fascism when this drama started to unroll for standing by DHH no matter what when activists wanted to deplatform and ban DHH from his own creation (Ruby on Rails). Which makes the Ruby Central drama due to the involvement of Shopify even more interesting:

mindcrash··on Steve Jobs and Cray-1 to be featured on 2026 American Innovations $1 coin
Featuring Jobs without Woz is actually disgusting. IMO, as a child of the 80s, Apple becoming popular and innovative required both.

EDIT: And forgot to mention Jef Raskin, who together with Woz played a pivotal role engineering the first Macintosh in 1984.

Offering compute, storage, databases, containers, you name it. And having personal experience with these guys I can tell you they are awesome. Want to host your stuff specifically in a CO2 neutral DC? They can do that too.

Leafcloud (NL) - https://leaf.cloud/

Green OpenStack based cloud provider

Stuxhost (NL/DE) - https://stuxhost.com

Focused on managed NextCloud hosting, managed webhosting and VPN

And there are hundreds more, actually.

mindcrash··on Trump calls for the firing of Lisa Monaco, Microsoft president of global affairs
"Fascism is characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy, subordination of individual interests for the perceived interest of the nation or race, and strong regimentation of society and the economy."

"Common themes among fascist movements include: authoritarianism, nationalism (including racial nationalism and religious nationalism), hierarchy, elitism, and militarism. Other aspects of fascism – such as a perception of decadence, anti-egalitarianism and totalitarianism – can be seen to originate from these ideas."

mindcrash··on Why Things Go to Shit
This point in particular just... clicked:

"So democracies can’t go to shit, right? Wrong. They just go to shit more slowly and quietly. There’s no incentive for democratic governments to provide objectively good policies (as opposed to good-sounding policies), because voters lack the expertise to assess the complex effects of any particular policy on any desired outcome. This is because 1) it is extremely hard (if not impossible) to acquire that expertise, 2) voters are largely ignorant and biased by tribal allegiances, and 3) each citizen’s vote has essentially zero impact on political outcomes, giving them essentially zero incentive to acquire that expertise or overcome those biases. Therefore, democratic governments gradually accumulate good-sounding (but ultimately bad) policies, grow increasingly sclerotic and inefficient, and go to shit."

mindcrash··on One Token to rule them all – Obtaining Global Admin in every Entra ID tenant
You could get into Microsoft's tenant with any Entra account.

That's because Microsoft's own fucking developers don't even understand how Entra authentication/authorization works, and that in some/most scenarios you'll need to check if a account is actually authorized to enter a protected resource post-login (which you need to do within the Oauth login flow in the resource being accessed, nobody will do it for you).

Something I already discovered by accident (and fixed, ofcourse!) in my own SaaS service at the time (with support for Entra B2B authentication) even before this researcher discovered the same at Microsoft:
