mimimihaha··on Ethiopia Plants 350M Trees in One Day to Combat Drought and Climate Change
Even 200 seeds per hour would require ~145,000 participants to plant all 350M seeds in a 12 hr time frame. I’m literally just imagining a few guys with a leaf blower and a bag of seeds for how they got 350M in 12 hours haha.
mimimihaha··on A Heavily-Commented Linux Kernel Source Code [pdf]
Just went to Vancouver a few months ago and I immediately recognized the aquabus and the background. I was just where the picture was eating the market's beefjerky! Crazy small world.
mimimihaha··on Best Buy Is Thriving in the Age of Amazon
Haha, I did a lot of research back in the day when I first started using prime to make sure that all the crap I received that I believed warranted a return wouldn't have my account banned. I wasn't just using my own experiences, but my research experience as well. I do agree with the rest of your statement though. Although if you ran Amazon you'd probably have to also agree with banning people that take extreme advantage of the system (obviously extreme, not semi-advantaging the system). Unlike Walmart or Best Buy, when you return things to Amazon you also have to account for shipping to and from the customer. I understand why Amazon does it-- if even 0.5% of the Amazon population took advantage it would be ridiculously unprofitable for Amazon to be running.

Now the fact that they sell fake crap and expect people not to use the return policy is obviously ridiculous. If you're going to continue selling fake crap, then you better be willing to allow people to return that fake crap without consequences. So I definitely agree with your point.

mimimihaha··on Best Buy Is Thriving in the Age of Amazon
Yikes. That sucks. I’ve heard once your account is flagged there is literally nothing you can do to use Amazon anymore. Can you elaborate on how it happened to you and when? I am pretty liberal when it comes to returns but I don’t use the system unless necessary.
mimimihaha··on Best Buy Is Thriving in the Age of Amazon
Oh yeah. When you get flagged in their system it’s pretty brutal. But you have to be extremely malicious to have it happen to you. Especially if you have a strong background with the company (member for many year + prime member for many years). Not only will they black list your address but every address on the account you own, meaning if you sent your friends a gift from amazon they will not longer be able to use amazon anymore. They go above and beyond for the abusers of the system. But to be flagged for that abuse, it typically is extreme circumstances. You can be very liberal with their return policy as long as you’re not malicious you’ll be okay.
mimimihaha··on Best Buy Is Thriving in the Age of Amazon
Honestly i’ve bought and returned plenty of stuff from Amazon. I never deal with their shit when something comes to me less than par. When I pay for prime, I expect to be paying for any mishandling of my items as well. Nearly every item i’ve wanted to return i’ve been told to just keep and i’ve never had any trouble with them. I always tell them i’m more than happy to send it back but they always refuse and just tell me to keep it anyways. I’ve been refunded several items in the $60-$70 range and told to keep it. It takes a lot to actually get flagged in their system. Especially if you’ve been a prime member for several years. (I think we’ve been members since 2008 or so). Don’t ever be scared to ask for it when it’s necessary and get your hard earned cash back.
mimimihaha··on A Citizen Is Suing the US for Putting Him on the 'Kill List'
That's the problem. They believe it's self defense seeking out and killing these terrorists randomly. I'm sure the way they determine whether they are legitimate threats to us is extremely lengthy, but some slip through the cracks like Bilal Kareem.
mimimihaha··on Fast.com now measures latency and upload speed
I feel like this is a good explanation of the issue.
mimimihaha··on The Logic Puzzle You Can Only Solve with Your Brightest Friend
Haha i love it
mimimihaha··on The Logic Puzzle You Can Only Solve with Your Brightest Friend
This reminds me of one of my favorite puzzles:

"Three wise men are told to stand in a straight line, one in front of the other. A hat is put on each of their heads. They are told that each of these hats was selected from a group of five hats: two black hats and three white hats. The first man, standing at the front of the line, can’t see either of the men behind him or their hats. The second man, in the middle, can see only the first man and his hat. The last man, at the rear, can see both other men and their hats.

None of the men can see the hat on his own head. They are asked to deduce its color. Some time goes by as the wise men ponder the puzzle in silence. Finally the first one, at the front of the line, makes an announcement: “My hat is white.”

He is correct. How did he come to this conclusion?"

mimimihaha··on Linux touchpad like a Macbook: goal worth pursuing?
Mid 2014 MBPr here. Got it the day after it came out for about $1000 after winning the Best Buy coupon lottery. I haven’t had a single thought of replacing it since. Its battery still lasts me all day, the laptop hasn’t slowed down on me, and is still completely silent. I’ve dropped it plenty of times and I’m getting a bit suspicious of how much longer it’ll last me. I’ve fallen in love with it though and I really hope I won’t have to replace it anytime soon.
mimimihaha··on Ask HN: How do you focus at work?
The QC25’s are on sale right now for $120 which I’ve heard is insanely cheap. Do you still not recommend them for that cheap of a price? I was just about to bite the bullet on it.
mimimihaha··on Ask HN: How do you focus at work?
Woah. 5mg XR is an extremelyyy low dosage. For comparison I’ve been taking 20mg XR and 10mg IR daily since I was 16 I believe. I also try and take breaks as often as possible. Definitely keep your dosage low like you have if you continue taking it. If you feel like you need a booster pill in the afternoon don’t increase your XR dosage, just add a 2.5 IR pill to some of your afternoons.
mimimihaha··on Twitch streamers who spend years broadcasting to no one
I've been trying to go to sleep earlier for a little over a week now (I used to sleep at about 3AM-5AMish and now I'm sleeping at about 9:30PM-10:3PM0ish now). My sleep plan is turn off all the lights, open up my laptop about 30 minutes before I try and sleep and watch an episode or two of futurama on 1.23x speed. I've been getting to sleep every night since on my target time despite being on an Adderall prescription. Futurama really helps for some reason. I'm trying to build it up to the point where I don't need to watch any show to get to sleep early, but I'm not quite at that point yet.
mimimihaha··on Google AdSense Banned Web Page About 32yo Bill Because It Was About Sexual Abuse
It makes me scared to think that the government has to be trying to develop algorithms to give advice to people higher up on the military branch about the decisions they should make like in eagle eye.
mimimihaha··on Show HN: Hacker News job trends
I really don’t mind most mobile sites. What I really hate that i wish i could disable is Amp from Google. Not only do they track your history without your permission with no opt out but they reduce the functionality of websites that i want to look at. They say the reduce the amount of data i use but when i have to load the website i’m visiting twice because i reload the page without amp, i’m using more data.
mimimihaha··on Sony posts whole movie on YouTube in trailer's place
I was thinking the same thing. It just so happens that the movie was in mp4 version in the same folder as the trailer as some dude uploaded it off his macbook? Just doesn’t make any sense. Although it could happen if they give the person who makes the trailers an mp4 he’d have to cut up and make. But even then, what are the odds he’d be the one with access to the trailer account and the one uploading. In no world does this seem like a mistake.
mimimihaha··on A team of former FBI investigators claims to have identified D.B. Cooper
This is what I found on Wikipedia. I don’t know if it clears it up or not:

“The FBI officially suspended active investigation of the case in July 2016, but the agency continues to request that any physical evidence that might emerge related to the parachutes or the ransom money be submitted for analysis.”

mimimihaha··on Please stop asking me to use the app
I actually switched to Hackernews and forced myself to read at least two paragraphs of any article before I read the comments. I’ve learned so much more from this website and wasted so much less time. I’ve went from several hours a day on reddit to about 30 minutes on HN on various times on the toilet everyday.
mimimihaha··on Marijuana addiction is real, and rising
This is a genuine question but legalization but still making kind of difficult to get or just all out legalization and selling it wherever?
mimimihaha··on Reverse Engineering for Beginners
Ahh this guy put a hell of a ton of work into making this. Unfortunately he discontinued his more condensed version of the document (which I believe was about 300+ pages or so?), but he does it all for free and takes care of several different language editions so I don’t blame him.
mimimihaha··on Apple is rebuilding Maps from the ground up
I would uninstall Apple maps entirely from my phone if i could but then there’d be no way to open up dropped pins from my messages. I always feel like the user is grabbed by the balls when it comes to device manufactures trying to force you to give them your data rather than hand it over to someone else, just because they know the user can’t do anything about it really.
mimimihaha··on Unlisted Links Aren’t Quite as Private as YouTube Promised
While working on a programming project for one of my classes I found an unlisted youtube video in a Google search that demonstrated exactly how to complete the project. I highly doubt the kid who uploaded it wanted anyone to see. It consistently showed up in Google searches too and was uploaded the same day. There is something definitely wrong with the way youtube protects its unlisted videos. I really wouldn’t be surprised if the article wasn’t exaggerating at all.
mimimihaha··on Ask HN: Is there a new habit you cultivated recently that is really paying off?
For me, I've actually used the self control app for a similar experience to Focus. https://selfcontrolapp.com/
mimimihaha··on “All accredited journalists at the #KimTrumpSummit get a free USB fan.”
Now thinking about it, if you made a malicious USB charging block that looks like the iPhone‘s and offered it to me, id probably fall for it.
mimimihaha··on The Repeal of Net Neutrality Is Official
I think we were scared of giving them the power to let it go the other way (like you mentioned). However, that’s not the only point as to why net neutrality was in place. Comcast and other ISPs are businesses, and businesses need to protect their own interests. In any case Comcast can block any website they wish to block from here on out. If a website doesn’t align with their political/businesses opinions, they now have the power to wish those opinions away. If WSJ publishes an article about how Comcast messed up, just block access to it. Easy.
mimimihaha··on On paying for software
And then it comes around full circle when to get advertisers you need to market them properly to specific people who would be most likely to buy their products. Then you start collecting data on users to figure out who would match with what, then the customer becomes the product.
mimimihaha··on How The New York Times Uses Software to Recognize Members of Congress
Remembering the 150 names of the memebers of my fraternity, along with their hometown, big brothers name, major and several facts about them took me nearly 8 weeks to completely. And to be candid I still didn’t know about 50 of them. It’s difficult memorizing those things and I was actively engaging with them on a daily basis and putting work towards memorizing their names. I could imagine it would be a stretch to remember that many names, many of whom you will never talk to in your life along with possibly their home state and party affiliation. Especially since they mentioned the number of congressmen/women is constantly changing.
mimimihaha··on Australia drafts laws forcing Facebook and Google to reveal encrypted data
That letter actually applied to Apple creating an OS with a backdoor for government agencies, which would soften the security for all iPhones.
