milosmns··on Ask HN: How is the remote vs in-person trend looking?
Berlin: most companies I know of are hybrid.

As a community organizer, I talk to a lot of people - nobody said that their management is forcing anything yet. My own experience is that management doesn't care in most situations, as long as the work gets done. And it does right now.

Reading online about it, I feel like most of the people who complain about this problem are in the USA, and that there's some kind of struggle between employees and their managers. Never felt this in my career so far, so can't really relate...

Side note: being an employee in Europe comes with a degree of job security (being a contractor doesn't unless you somehow insure yourself privately). But, employment benefits come with massive paperwork complications for remote people (like who pays if you fall from your chair during work). Pros and cons, as always.
milosmns··on Show HN: MiniMail – Disposable Email Service for Everyone
Eh, I don't know if that's really a problem. Query "10 minute mail" in Google gives hundreds of results within a millisecond, so... you do this lookup once in 2 years and you're done? Really don't feel like it's a big deal, at least for me

Yep, and also add on social/medical/pension paperwork and permits…

Similar here. Mine was also very socially challenged, so to speak.
milosmns··on Hot or Not?
Eh, I didn't read it that way. I felt like it was more of a "I crunched some data, might be wrong, pls check" kind of article
milosmns··on Hot or Not?
It is in multiple places in the article, isn’t it?
milosmns··on Ask HN: Implications of open-source banking apps?
Ok so I was thinking about this as well while I was at one of those modern mobile banks.

With closed source apps — as soon as you write for the JVM or in JS (i.e. Android and Web), you’re exposing the inner workings of your app… more or less. With C/C++ and similar stacks (read: Desktop or iOS or native parts of Android), one could argue that you expose less. But still, all code on clients is exposed, theoretically, so either way I don’t believe that open code itself would be much more problematic than what code is today in closed source apps. We did a bunch of things that are considered safety measures, and those could be coded into an OSS app as well.

But then, there is network encryption, potential implementations of cert pinning, integrations with other services/tools, secret keys, local storage, databases, and many other things that might be hard to lock down completely or even audit for security risks… this was the really tough part I believed. But maybe it’s just my knowledge gap, that’s fair as well.

In the end, my thinking was “omg I’d miss something for sure, and it would be easy for hackers to kill the project and steal everything”… and therefore OSS is not the way to go. I’m more confident nowadays. But then again, cryptocurrencies are open for the most part… so that’s an interesting counter-argument I guess. (:

I wonder what others think. I also wonder if there are open tools or checklists for security audits…

Do you think even major (this.0.0) versions would cause the same issue?
milosmns··on We Put Half a Million Files in One Git Repository, Here’s What We Learned
Really weird. But maybe this team is in a country where developers cost 100x less? (: Still weird though.
milosmns··on We Put Half a Million Files in One Git Repository, Here’s What We Learned
I used to work at a company where our git repository would get so polluted with change-related junk that we had to call (many times literally call) BitBucket and ask them to run git clean up on the remote. Otherwise, fetch/pull and many operations on remote would take forever or often even fail completely due to timeout or lack of RAM.

It's Thursday and you wanna release a hotfix - but nope - all builds are failing because git can't cope with junk and your CI can't proceed. You then have to call BB instead and ask them to clean up, hoping they'll do it within the same day. Ah, exciting times.

milosmns··on We Put Half a Million Files in One Git Repository, Here’s What We Learned
This is valid. But I think it would make sense to challenge this and even (try to) leave if product is dictating tech what to do with their repos... especially if there's a boss figure pushing imaginary deadlines without talking to the team beforehand. There's a job crisis now, I know, but millions of files were not checked in during 2021. We should do better when it comes to organizing how we work
milosmns··on Rustdesk – Remote desktop software, an open source TeamViewer alternative
They do clearly state that the Web component is in beta (realistically alpha or dev), so it's probably fine to be not secure during QA
milosmns··on Creating a Culture of Innovation
Maybe we could organize a discussion panel with genuinely interested SAP leaders?

Something like... "what SAP sees as innovative vs. the products we have to use today"

and try to find some middle ground?

Also from EE, now in central EU. Everyone uses WA and Telegram, nobody on SMS

How far east are you?
