milesdyson_phd··on The database servers powering Let's Encrypt (2021)
If you are an enterprise (or just big enough) the prices on Dell’s site are meaningless, they are just conversation starters if that.

the newer (8+) iDRAC's are nice now that you can point them at downloads.dell.com and it will figure out the updates for you

milesdyson_phd··on US Mortgage Lenders Are Starting to Go Broke
Depends on the lender, that is how a lot operate. Some provide servicing as well, and will cherry pick their safest loans to service while tranching and selling the rest.

Genuine question: how did it "damage" you?
milesdyson_phd··on Murder-Suicides by Pilots Are Vexing Airlines as Deaths Mount
For the majority of charter/private/business flights this wouldn't be feasible as the vast majority of flights tend to be single pilot ops.

milesdyson_phd··on Tell HN: I'm Afraid We're Shutting Down
When the economy and job market began storming back, we were inundated with inbound requests for our services. Our perseverance seemed to be paying off. Except now we were hit with a new gut punch: “The Great Resignation.” Now our workers were reticent to come back to work. And if they did accept a job, they’d often leave after only a few days.

As in the workers you placed, employees of 70MR? Why would they leave after a few days? Can you expand on this?

It became obvious that we lacked the resources to weather this new storm while hoping and praying the world would normalize soon. (It still hasn’t.)

What does normalize mean to you (or 70MR)?

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply they were unscathed.
milesdyson_phd··on What happened to Russias Air Force? U.S. officials, experts stumped
One thing I don't understand is Russia's opening missile salvos, they barely even struck at the heart of the Ukrainian Air Force. I guess you could theorize they didn't want to destroy that infrastructure in the event that the Ukrainian government rolled over, but that seems to have been a risky bet that is currently playing out.

milesdyson_phd··on Howard University’s removal of classics is a spiritual catastrophe
I went to a state school as well, we had a department of Romance and Classical studies. So it got lumped in with the romance languages.
milesdyson_phd··on Ask HN: Ever lost your love for coding? How did you get it back?
I was planning to go get my MBA, then I transferred teams and suddenly I like programming again. To be fair I don't think it was so much the coding that I didn't like, as everything that came with it (at least on my previous team) which in turn made me not want to code anymore.

milesdyson_phd··on Repairs of leaning San Francisco skyscraper on hold
For the right price I am sure they would be bought, especially if someone (probably an investment group) is trying to profit long term assuming the building is "fixable" whatever that may mean.

I had a biochem professor in college who talked extremely slowly, like we are talking 2x speed just to approach normal talking (and her lectures were all online). I usually listen to stuff at 2x or greater depending on the content.

We were/are (Fortune 500) in the process of migrating from Ping to Auth0... Glad I’m not on the group that’s been working on that for the past 1-2 years
milesdyson_phd··on We Expect 300k Fewer Births Than Usual This Year in the US
During the height of severe covid cases in my area a lot of hospitals were not even allowing spouses in during delivery, so yes it was still relatively safe but definitely not the same.
milesdyson_phd··on Robinhood CEO, Reddit Co-Founder and Others Testify on GameStop Stock
Every single Robinhood user could have had $5M in cash in their accounts and they still would have had to suspend purchasing shares. Brokerages cannot use client funds for depository requirements. Every purchase transaction required Robinhood to cover 100% with their own cash until settlement.
