mildweed··on Ask HN: What in your experience has management gotten right?
Apologizing. When they screwed up, one way or another, they owned up to it and said so to as many people who would listen. This kind of culture is infectious, in the good way.

Be respectful of calendars. When I block off some time to focus on a hard problem, they don't interrupt me. If something does come up, they cautiously IM, "when would be a good time for an important interruption?" and nothing else. No phone calls, no swinging by my desk, no details of the issue, etc.

Saw your comment on "How to Interview Engineers" but can't reply to it anymore.

I'm preparing a talk for the KC Developers Conference "The Two Question Code Quiz" on how to run an effective technical interview. Please reach out to me, https://github.com/scottconnerly, I'd love to bounce my ideas off you.

mildweed··on Dramatically Reducing Software Vulnerabilities [pdf]
I can definitely see more standards and certifications coming to pass, which then later distill down to one or two primary certifications that everybody aspires to get. Currently there are multiple privacy/security standards (PCI, HIPPA, FERPA, etc). We'll probably have to get more opinions from more sensitive-data industries, and then for them all to find the common ground.

But how would we incentivize businesses properly to be [WHATEVER] compliant, and pay for the regular security scans? Social proof / public shame hasn't worked yet, despite MANY high profile examples. We may have to impose some sort of carrot/stick combo that says: "If your infrastructure consists of N# of networked devices, you must meet these standards. If you fail to, and get caught in a data breach (like what happens with PCI), fines that could put you out of business get levied. Additionally, if you show proof of your security certification every year, you get a tax break."

mildweed··on We're ditching the office completely
I am an extrovert. I worked in many offices, many of the advertising agencies for most of my career. About a year ago, I started a remote job at Fire Engine Red (another fully virtual company), so I can definitely speak to your concerns.

1. Create co-working opportunities. I have a standing co-working day with a group of other work-from-home'ers every Monday. Sunday afternoon we text to coordinate where we're going to meet up. Its reliable. Its social interaction. We have an in-group. On top of this one, I have a couple other people I less frequently co-work with, both coffee shops and kitchens.

2. Its not all about work. This WFH shift for me has given me an even stronger excuse to get out and do my group hobbies even more. For me, its performing in a comedy group. Nothing more social than getting people to laugh.

3. Yes, it is a bit lonely. Happy hours are less likely to happen. But when they do, its with people you actually wanted to hang out with, not just whomever happened to be at the office that day. Casual desk drop-by's are mostly gone, and I actually like that.

All in all, not that lonely, unless you let it be.

re: "Coordination (consuming when?)"

Z-Wave already has ADR (Automated Demand Response) capabilities. http://z-wavealliance.org/energy-management/

So the protocol (OpenADR2.0a) is defined, the messaging is available (from a DRAS), and the consumer client is listening (Z-Wave). We just need more appliances to build ADR integrations to Z-Wave.

mildweed··on What Happens Next Will Amaze You
"Big Ads" is very apt. Advertising agencies are very much like start-ups: often their goal is to get acquired by one of the major agencies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_advertising_agencies

Those top 5 agencies are the ones who can afford to do privacy-invading advertising, because they can do it at scale.

Digital Notary Service:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ENotary

Electronic notarization is a process whereby a notary affixes an electronic signature and notary seal using a secure Public key to an electronic document (such as a PDF or Word document). Once affixed to the electronic document, the document is rendered tamper evident such that unauthorized attempts to alter the document will be evident to relying parties.[1] The e-notary will use cryptography and Public key infrastructure to create, manage, distribute, use, store, and revoke the digital certificate. The Electronic Notary also must keep an electronic register of each act performed.

The line behind me wondering why I'm not done yet. Also, by using a Coin, I'm positioning myself as somebody who uses great, new technology. When that fails, it reflects poorly on me. Now I'm the guy who spends money on something that doesn't work, but keeps brandishing it, perhaps for some ego reason.
mildweed··on The Rising Appeal of Apprenticeship
Years ago I wanted to make an apprenticeship locator / pairing service website. It also was going to have apprenticeship certification mixed in there. I believe apprenticeships done well can replace the majority of (but certainly not all) college degrees. Completing a certified apprenticeship should be as good of an endorsement as a college degree (or better!). So many fields, it would probably be better: advertising, insurance, journalism, programming.

If anybody wants to take this and run with it, please do. Just hit me up to brainstorm at some point, I'd love to flesh out the idea more with like-minded entrepreneurs.
