milanvrekic··on I built a system to detect guns in schools and call 911
Most, if not all jurisdictions no longer allow automated calls directly to dispatch (911).

Most shootins are done with handguns and not rifles statistically - and those are much much easier to conceal.

What happens to false positives? Are you increasing a chance of a kid with a "tactical umbrella" being shot?

but yay! more surveilance and cameras!

milanvrekic··on Discord is laying off 17 percent of employees
That severance package is quite generous. "Why can't everyone have a cusshion" = because someone has to pay for it.
milanvrekic··on Billing Engines Don't Solve Pricing Problems
Tier seems to be solving a real problem that every company beyond MVP stage will face.

What I would love to see is a tool that would make it easy to run multi-variant pricing experiments and give me the optimal pricing down to geo, platform etc. "Optimal" being the maximum cash collected.

milanvrekic··on Sue Big Oil
I have no special love for big oil, but for a decade G7 governments have worked on limiting the production and transportation of oil (look at pipeline projects in Canada and USA for example). Each oil extraction operation requires tens of millions of dollars to start and run with a closing window of time to recoup the investment.

On the other side, we have people yelling foul due to "record profits" I mean, yeah, nominally they are higher but they are not outpacing the inflation.

Also, it's easy to forget that when you pay $2.30 cents per liter here in Canada, literally 50% of that is various government taxes (provincial and federal) so when the state basically controls extraction, transportation and to a large extent pricing at the gas station - it's a little bit too convenient to blame the oil companies.

milanvrekic··on Ask HN: What would make you comfortable buying a car online?
You want to have total transparency. It makes sense. The "secret" of the industry is that dealers are not in the car selling business, they are in the financing business.

Currently there is a lot of asymmetry of information between the dealer and a consumer. How do you know that the dealer is giving you the best offer from a lender vs. a bit worse offer from a lender they have a relationship with?

milanvrekic··on Show HN: Needed Ideas for things to build, so I built this
You should pivot. This is more useful as a joke generator.
milanvrekic··on Should you pay to pitch an angel group? What the data says
Some angel groups have extensive pitch training and coaching programs attached to them and there I can see some justification for pitch charges but only if those charges are deducted from a successful raise. If the company does not raise funds, obviously the coaching failed and it would be wrong to charge anything.

Unfortunately in most cases in Canada there is no coaching or training of any kind - just a fee that taxes already cash-strapped entrepreneurs.

milanvrekic··on Ask HN: How can I send a secure email?
I am biased (full disclosure - I'm a founder), but TitanFile offers a secure file sharing solution (encryption, audit trails...) . There are free accounts available for new users at titanfile.com.
milanvrekic··on Nokia sold 4.4 million Lumia smartphones in 'solid' Q4 2012
I bought one, had it for two weeks and crawled back to iOS. Phone as a phone is very solid and beautiful, but Windows Mobile 8 is still a disaster.

Doing a factory reset (regular, honest-to-god, get in the menu and select a reset) bricked the phone. And it seems to be common bug. Microsoft is blaming Nokia and Nokia is Blaming Microsoft....

milanvrekic··on Could Google Glass be banned in the casinos?
Shit, better put my tinfoil hat back on :)

milanvrekic··on Could Google Glass be banned in the casinos?
I wonder what are the policies for cell phones?
milanvrekic··on Fully Responsive Web IDE (Java, C++, Python, Pascal)
Looks great on ipad.
milanvrekic··on Ask HN: Why all these funding of filesharings sites?
"upload -> store -> share."

Upload where and for how long? What happens to the files over time? What about huge files and ability to pause/resume upload? What about encryption? What about sharing with more that one person at the time? Will it allow me to preview a file before I download it?

Saying " upload -> store -> share." is oversimplifying as " upload -> store -> share" does not work for anyone who is using file sharing to conduct professional services (think of a law firm with bounced emails because the 5Mb attachment was too big, or a law firm that needs to receive email notification on file delivery etc.)

milanvrekic··on Ask HN: Why all these funding of filesharings sites?
For most investors, it's about making money. Making money by controlling a niche. Each of the funded File Sharing startups that got funded I came across, had these two components:

1.) Clear advantage in a specific Niche (for us it was legal compliance, security and tracking - all of it matters a lot to lawyers and auditors).

2.) Have a serious (and usually viable) plan to further differentiate.

Disclaimer: I am from bellow mentioned TitanFile.
