mikodin··on Cloudflare acquires Astro
Yeah I see the benefit right off the bat, this is a direct head to Vercel and NextJS.

With that said, I have no idea on the market share or profitability of any of that or Cloudflare vs Vercel.

Also perhaps the rails that will be put in place for seamless 1 click Astro deploy will continue to push them forward with other technologies as well, so it's not just about Astro.

I do feel that fear as well, is this an unnecessary distraction for CloudFlare? Time will tell.

mikodin··on There's a ridiculous amount of tech in a disposable vape
I think just an oversight—disposables weren't really around at the time the time that the ban happened. 2019, people were mostly smoking Juul and having those crazy custom rigs that they fill with the juice. Disposables really started to take off around 2021 - 2022. Atleast that's what I saw with people around me in NY and California.
mikodin··on Show HN: Why write code if the LLM can just do the thing? (web app experiment)
Well the need is to arrive where you are going.

If we were in an imagined world and you are headed to work

You either walk out your door and there is a self driving car, or you walk out of your door and there is a train waiting for you or you walk out of your door and there is a helicopter or you walk out of your door and there is a literal worm hole.

Let's say all take the same amount of time, are equally safe, same cost, have the same amenities inside, and "feel the same" - would you care if it were different every day?

I don't think I would.

Maybe the wormhole causes slight nausea ;)

mikodin··on Google Pixel's most dangerous bug: failing to call 911
> and my absolute favorite making a call which would dial the number and then about a second later immediately hang up.

Is it your phone hanging up or are you calling an iPhone in do not disturb mode, in which case you have to call twice for it to go through (because their phone is automatically hanging up on you)

mikodin··on Beliefs that are true for regular software but false when applied to AI
Honestly I love the priority notifications and the notification summaries. The thing that drives me absolutely insane, is that the fact that when I view the notification through clicking on it from another space other than the "While in the reduce interruptions focus" it doesn't clear. Because of this, I always have infinite notifications.

I want to open WhatsApp and open the message and have it clear the notif. Or atleast click the notif from the normal notif center and have it clear there. It kills me

mikodin··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2025)
A simple comment, but wow I really like the look of Bonsai! The lighting, shading and shapes are really beautiful, I think a game made in this would feel really unique
mikodin··on Atlassian is acquiring The Browser Company
My hunch is a loyal user base.

Anecdotally, everyone I put onto Arc and the person who put me on still uses it.

I’ve been using Arc for the last two years and was genuinely sad on its discontinuation. I now don’t really know what I’ll do when it goes away.

mikodin··on Show HN: Meetup.com and eventribe alternative to small groups
Word of mouth. Ironically enough, I just sent this to a friend around the same time you commented this

"I’m curious where event discovery is for___, are there TG / WA groups?"

mikodin··on Developer's block
I don't think it needs to translate to "go on vacation". During my time being employed, this translated into getting up and stretching, taking a few minutes to look out the window, going for a short walk, taking an intentional breath, sitting and meditating for 15 minutes, actually eating lunch away from my computer, or not eating lunch and going for a quick run or doing yoga or going to the gym.

This can come forth in so many ways.

Moment by moment we can have an eye on our body and what it is asking for, I've found it to not only make me more productive, but also led to my baseline of stress to being way, way lower then everyone around me which is contagious in a positive way.

mikodin··on US to rewrite its past national climate reports
I think there is also a reality in which our scope of what we care about is widened beyond just the human species. As a species that has such a powerful impact on other beings, it would be nice to try and reduce the amount of unnecessary suffering and pain that we place on them. While we cannot eliminate it, life takes life yadayada, we can reduce it and try to curb the mass extinction that we are actively causing.

From another angle, it's taken a really long time for evolution to get to this point, what can be experienced from the myriad life forms is quite wide and widening, it would be a shame to return to only the level of a microbe.

Must we take everything else down with us?

mikodin··on Leaked Apple meeting shows how dire the Siri situation is
As another mentioned, many of us haven't been trained. Every time I've reached for Siri I've been let down and just did it myself or didn't do it at all.

When I bought the new iphone (coming from Android most recently and iphone before that) I figured that Siri would actually become good because of this translation layer, and then them just not doing that has been a huge let down for me on the phone.

mikodin··on Show HN: I made a app that uses NFC as a physical switch to block distractions
This is awesome, yay for an open source https://getbrick.app/

I'm curious if you have an NFC tag that you'd recommend or that you like to use?

mikodin··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
Definitely implement BYOK - although people may be skeptical because it's not running locally

A side note - put on the site this exact message and then include your venmo or something - I bet you'll get donations :)

I've had this exact idea for quite some time, I'm glad that someone is making it!

mikodin··on What a $1 deal says about America's office market
I would love to see data on what the impact of more local restaurants, cafes and delis are seeing. As we work from home, we are spending more time in the actual places we live. This but paints one picture, and maybe the reality is that we don't need a sandwich shop on every single block.
mikodin··on Do literally anything
When I'm in that scenario, so much to do, so little time, what should I do ahhhh. I love to ask myself - "What am I resisting?" and then doing that thing. It's the biggest momentum creator that I've found.

It's a highly accurate radar system into the fact that I know what I should be doing, and I just want to cover it over and pretend that I don't as a means of continuing on and amplifying my own exciting melodrama!

mikodin··on How have you found purpose in your life?
This is most similar to me as well.

One of the key components of Buddhism is that it is experiential. While Buddhism is definitely a religion, it greatly differs from Judeo Christian / Islamic theologies. I would try to pause before applying the same sort of biases or lenses you may have towards other religions. Buddhism is meant to be experienced in the right now, the moment to moment life as you are living it.

I highly recommend digging into it, whatever doesn't resonate - move on, and what does go deeper. There is no wrong way to do it.

As we lift our veils and truly see what life entails, we really get into the nitty gritty of our own lived experience and things begin to greatly change. We discover the broader context that we live in.

Contributing towards this beautiful broader context has given me an immense amount of purpose. I can think of no greater gift I've received than having this click into place.

Aside from that, I highly recommend doing a retreat of some sort. Wether it be a meditation retreat, yoga retreat, or wilderness retreat. Even just a few days can be absolutely life changing. I have seen it with my own eyes.

And finally depending where you are, what your social circle is like, what your mental and physical health conditions are, what traumas you've experienced in your life and simply your access, a guided Mushroom or Ketamine journey may be of great value.

The question you are asking is a deeply important one, may we all spend the rest of our life exploring and finding answers that lead to more questions.

Stay curious my friend, good luck!

mikodin··on Ask HN: Independent contractors, what tips do you have for starting?
This is so thorough, thank you so much - I really appreciate your insight!

Loved the bit on higher expectations than a single employee along with becoming an expert / specialist in a particular area.

Super appreciate it all, thank you

mikodin··on Ask HN: Experienced devs, do you wish for work to find you?
100%, this is exactly what I want. Provided that the opportunities are legit and aren't spam and that they pay actually competitive and it's not a race to the bottom like upwork or something
mikodin··on The GPT Store
My guess is they are using Embeds to efficiently search a larger corpus of data and picking some data sources that then get injected into the system prompt.

That's how I'm doing it for myself and how many other companies are doing it to enable doc interaction, etc.

Edit: Wish I knew the term RAG (comment next to me mentions it) before going down a rabbit hole of trial and error with the limited amount of info on Embeds

I found this to be useful https://aws.amazon.com/what-is/retrieval-augmented-generatio...

mikodin··on I disconnected from the electric grid for 8 months in Manhattan
Nothing is divorced from nature, we are nature.

With that said, I think people who live in cities tend to feel plants, animals and ecosystems that are not ours less, and therefore we may be quite ignorant to the destruction we are causing.

It's one thing to know in the mind that we are destroying other life forms and it's another to live in that destruction.

Sure, depending on the measuring stick cities are more efficient. But I think most importantly, they likely aren't conducive to creating the sorts of empathy required for us to make decisions that are more in line with preserving other forms of life.

I don't quite know the answer, like many things existential...it's complex, confusing, nuanced and hard to grasp. I hope that we figure it out and I hope that I answer the call within me to join in that figuring out.

mikodin··on Talking About Large Language Models
Edit: I also see that I am falling prey to exactly what the paper itself is talking about.

"The more adept LLMs become at mimicking human language, the more vulnerable we become to anthropomorphism, to seeing the systems in which they are embedded as more human-like than they really are. This trend is amplified by the natural tendency to use philosophically loaded terms, such as "knows", "believes", and "thinks", when describing these systems."

An ignorant statement / question I have is why are you using it write code? It's a chatbot, no?

As you've mentioned, it's a really powerful search, and is like having a conversation with someone who is literally the internet.

For example "What is the glycemic index of oatmeal?"

"What is Eihei Dogen's opinion of the Self and how does it differ from Bassui's?"

I get highly detailed and accurate output with these.

The first question is simple and the second is far from it. It's breaking down two Zen masters experiences and comparing them in an amazing way.

I've been thoroughly impressed with Chat GPT so far.

Ask it to breakdown the high level points of a book you've read.

Ask it to rewrite a song in the style of a different artist.

It's so cool, I feel like I legitimately have an answer to any random question at my finger tips and have to do zero filtering for it.

mikodin··on Ask HN: Is your memory as bad as mine?
Woahhh cool that there is a word for it! I most definitely have a similar memory (autobiographical)...and am 30!

I've been learning how to navigate it - for example "tell me about a time that..." is extremely difficult for me. But if I change the prompt to "think of a time when I was living at my grandparents house in the winter" or similar, I can begin to recall things, specificity is key. I also have difficulty when people are like "remember X time", and nothing will come up, and I'll have to ask further questions to try and trigger the memory, often when it triggers the whole thing can flood in.

I also find that my mind doesn't typically rehash old things, the mind isn't stewing in memories, it's usually in futurescapes or random thought lines on topics. I actually think this is one of the reasons for me not being able to pull it up quickly and needing specific ways to trigger the memory, it's like the memories are in cold storage.

mikodin··on Sperm counts worldwide are plummeting faster than we thought
This isn't based on anything except for intuition, take it or leave it :).

Like most things - eliminating the highest points of contact likely would suffice.

Daily habits are the ones that matter.

Are you drinking from a plastic water bottle everyday? Is your water filter plastic? Are you drinking coffee from a keurig or similar? Are you storing food in plastic containers? Are you heating food in plastic containers? Are you using plastic utencils? Are you using plastic lined pans? Are you buying food wrapped in plastic?

Etc etc.

It's a good starting place...then get your sperm tested, it's not prohibitively expensive.

mikodin··on Ask HN: Alternative ways to make money with coding and system skills?
Ohh ma gahd, I've been wanting something like this for ages!
mikodin··on FTX’s balance sheet was bad
One thing to note is that this is distinctly the differentiator of AMMs (automated market makers), Uniswap for example.

Here are the docs for V1 (V3 is different, but the core pieces remain) https://docs.uniswap.org/protocol/V1/introduction.

V2 docs have fun diagrams if that is useful for you https://docs.uniswap.org/protocol/V2/concepts/protocol-overv...

It's quite interesting, and essentially what happens is that a pairing pool is created, ETH <> Shtcoin for example. So now for that shtcoin to have "value" it needs to be liquid within the pool, ie can go into ETH. The cost of the coin is determined mathematically based on the ratio each side of the pool.

mikodin··on Flu and colds are back with a vengeance
I mean none of this is ever going to go away, right? We'll always have diseases...right?

So is wearing a mask, and staying apart from people actually a sustainable way of living, long term? We are now in the long term, we did that for a long time, and to be honest, I don't think the general population could go back to it.

It helped, we weren't getting sick, but people were for sure getting depressed and life was very hard for many many people, which trade off is worth it?

I think it made sense for the time, we had a new virus, things were questionable on long term effects (still are), etc...I think the next thing is to now figure out how to better live with these diseases, reduce spread when infected and care for each other.

These are just things that swirl through my mind on the topic. It's complex and nuanced, what is right is definitely not clear (to me).

mikodin··on 30TB Portable SSD Hits Walmart for $39 but Stay Away from It
Re-learning to love gifts, particularly the giving aspect has brought a lot of joy to my life recently. But I am not talking about buying someone something at Walmart, something they can just buy themselves.

The gifts tend to skew more towards art, fabrics, jewelry, house items. Things that are uniquely found in a particular place, not exactly expensive but mostly hard to acquire / stumble upon.

But yes I agree, the commercialized consumerism is quite off putting. I am grateful for it though, as I am now coming full circle and rediscovering the joy from a very human and primordial action.

mikodin··on 30TB Portable SSD Hits Walmart for $39 but Stay Away from It
Not a parent, but for me when gift giving and receiving - there is a lot of joy in opening the completely 100% unopened thing.

And opening many children toys is usually pretty difficult without scissors and or destroying the packaging. The amount of time consuming precision tape peeling without removing the graphic layer of cardboard may be a little untenable around Christmas.

mikodin··on On Being Rich-ish: Lessons I learned becoming suddenly middle-class
As you likely know, you are at the point where more money won't change these feelings.

Therapy or meditation, likely both may help induce a shift. As the grip loosens you will find many things begin to change.

"Sleeping well at night", is likely the single most important thing you can focus on. If you choose to focus on that, it likely will permeate many aspects of your life..

You may find a deeper and more authentic experience and through that you may find that you actually have won the lottery. You are safe. You have 5 years of expenses - I guarantee you that you could figure out solutions to just about anything that comes your way in 5 years.

You're no longer trying to survive. It's now time to learn how to live.

mikodin··on Ask HN: What can you realistically manufacture in your garage?
This is what my Dad does...and he has a lathe in the garage typically producing things for helicopters and airplanes.
